We will be in touch
As a generation X bod I should probably know the answer to this but, I really can't remember what I used to do as a youngster when I wanted to learn something not taught at school.
For instance, I was just tucking into my lunch when I wondered - at what point in life did man realise that some foods taste so good when cooked?
Did Michael the caveman get fed up with the constant nagging by his cavewoman Michelle. She moaned once too often about another mill stone being used as a wheel on his commuter, that he clubbed her a bit too hard and she fell dead into the fire.
After initial panic, Michael realised she smelt real nice all of a sudden - and wondered???
Of course today and because I'm intrigued I will now go and google the point of realisation but, prior to the internet did we even have these thoughts and desires to find the answer, or did we think and then forget the question?
I don't remember hours in a library so I guess the latter.
We had things called books. Google them.
Probably just chat about with mates who were of similar mindset. Or Library if really interested.
Thankfully Sir Tim Berners-Lee gifted us with the world wide web, to research said queries and access information instantaneously.
I sometimes think of the same when I think of baking and all the variants of bread and doughs, etc or all the types of pasta how did they come across this?
also see Cow's milk, what was man doing to find out fluids come from udders and then drink it!
Watching the newborns?
Watching the newborns?
What, the babies were feeding off cows back then? Cool
I dimly recall being taught in primary school that cooking was probably invented when early man accidentally left some raw food too close to a fire and tried eating it anyway.
I do think along the same lines though, as twonks. Often when in a world of my own, you wonder some random question. I guess it's made us lazy, just Google it (or Ask Jeeves yesterday when Google died haha). But at same time, far more knowledgeable having free access to vast information... mostly about pointless shit though
I used to ask my mum n dad. Cant do that anymore :'(
Don't remember not having some form of encyclopedia in the house as a kid. And spent a lot of time in the library down the road from our house.

Primary school is famous for its academic rigour. 😀
OP, remember that back before the internet everyone used to read newspapers. Not necessarily great quality papers, but at least there was a choice of opinion. More people read books and magazines. Some people did evening courses. TV had lots of real educational stuff on it, and even the news showed actual news and not just the opinion of some toothless fool who happened to be woken up by the event.
or did we think and then forget the question?
Even in the early days of the internet, I used to think of something I needed an answer for, and would have forgotten it by the time I got to my computer. I love that I can get instant answers now.

As much as Drac clearly didn't read all the original post 😀 , as I said I didn't visit libraries, that is probably the answer - or rather the written word is.
In out house growing up through the 80 (born in 71), I remember quite a few books and in particular-
The Collins DIY manual
Various Haynes owners manuals for past and present cars
That particular years Guinness book of records
A few encyclopaedias
And I later found 'The Joy of Sex' but we won't go into that here...
Then I had a 20 odd collection of A-Z cars that my parents bought me over a few years and when I could pay for mags I read ZZapp64 then Loaded / FHM before ending up with What Hi-Fi and various MTB mags.
Probably had 100's of the things at one point - in particular I had over 100 hi-fi mags all neatly lined up in my room.
So I guess information on my/your chosen subject has always been there in various forms, just not the instant access to random questions.
Not going anywhere with this thread or post tbh, just thinking how much things have changed !
Fetch my pipe and slippers ... haha.
Oh, and the Sunday Sport, loads of useful information was gleaned from that back in the day 😀
