I did the British Fell and Hill Relay Champs (aka FRA Relays) at weekend up at Tebay. Our club managed to get two teams in - a Mixed team and a Vets team. I was on the Navigational leg for Vets and I was getting a bit twitchy watching the clag coming down as we arrived! Luckily it cleared a lot by the time we set off so locating the checkpoints wasn't too arduous. I had a good run, encouraged my slightly slower partner round (2 people on that leg) and both teams finished! This is always a result for our club as we had a long patch of DNFs. Also we were quite close together so we had a race within a race. 1'03" between us. A good day out exploring part of the Howgills I'd never visited before. Up near Edinburgh (Carnethy hosting) next year so hopefully I'll get in a team and get to take part.

I’m still riding my bike so exercise is there. Will a break mean starting again when I run again?!
Just scraped a 5k on my lunch and it just felt like I was going through the motions of running for the sake of it. Just no enjoyment

I don’t run with a club. Local club run on Tuesdays/Thursdays which is riding night! I could maybe start showing up on a Tuesday though. Another club in Gloucester I could run with.
I’m leaning towards the trail stuff at the minute in all fairness. Maybe I should get up the woods more. I think going forward I will keep running kit in the van so I can get a couple miles in during work.
I want to run a trail half and there is a circular walk in Wales I want run so maybe they can be targets. If I find a south west trail half marathon I might enter that
Thanks for the replies. Will just keep plodding for a bit until decision actually hits me!

I had this with the bike, since August. Hence starting running. I know I'll be back on the bike at some point, but when I'm ready and hungry for it, not just doing because I'm a cyclist and have a garage full of bikes!

Maybe I should get up the woods more. I think going forward I will keep running kit in the van so I can get a couple miles in during work.

I do that now, running in work lunch break. It's OK, gets you a run in, and for the rest of the afternoon I feel pretty awesome. But I do enjoy it on weekend or after work more, when I can go off road, and I'm not clock watching.

Did my first proper mountain run last Friday. Up and down Arran’s Goatfell. Really enjoyed the run but haven’t been able to walk since with a severe case of DOMS in my quads.
Now I’m not at all surprised I hurt so much, it was probably too big a jump in climbing and descent not to expect it but my question is, how do I keep my legs from doing the same next time. Obviously my normal running regime isn’t enough, so do I need to do more hills (already do a fair bit, it’s hard to avoid here), more hill repeats, or some sort of weight training. I’m pretty sure it was the descent that did the damage rather than the climbing, so downhill repeats?

I did that on holiday in Italy many years ago. Ran up a hill next to Lake Como and just kept on going. Ran down and the next few days I could hardly walk from the DOMS in my thighs! How the wife laughed. Too much too soon basically.

@crewlie good effort Mark, that's a big lump of hill, effectively 3000' of ascent/descent as it's from sea level, lots of munros don't have that much!.

Goatfell is sore on the quads as there's A LOT of big boulder step downs, I'd recommend going up Beinn Nuis from Rosa or even better, Caisteal Abhail from North Glen Sannox, much easier on the muscles descending IMO (and both have better views!)

Hmm, the Castles does sound like a good compromise, I think Nuis might be a bit boggy above Garbh Alt at the moment.
First though I’ll see if I can make my legs work well enough to get round a flattish 5k without crying too much 😂

It's never really that bad tbh, tbh I quite enjoy descending the boggy shit!

Another mile added on my rehabilitation plan and 10 seconds quicker per mile on a 7 mile run and a PB on section so I’m happy. My legs are ****ed tonight though.

Good work Johndoh!

Went out for a short easy 5km run tonight, a guided headtorch run as part of a little running festival in Ecclesall Woods. A mate who lives nearby came with me, and part way admitted it would be his first ever 5km. He's been doing C25k but was just in the last stages of it and hadn't quite got up to the full 5 yet, so his first was in the dark and off road. Well chuffed for him, he moved really well all the way and even the longest climb he was still jogging steadily all the way up.

Took a week off to let my shin splint thing settle down. By yesterday, pretty techy and needing to get out there (I've been swimming a few times through the week).

So, first trail run in my new Salomons in the afternoon. Took the dog with me, he was running rings around me, bursting pheasants out of the bushes and living the dream. It was raining heavy, mucky and in the trees it had a real atmosphere. Did an easy 5k (Z2 HR) and it was so much fun. You really have to focus on what you're doing vs the tarmac just pounding away until you've hit the time you're aiming for. My form was very different, shorter quicker stride just due to the uneven terrain, avoiding large lumps of flint and roots.

Really really liked that!

Shin doesn't seem to hurt this morning, maybe a tiny twinge when walking - might be in my head, but will remain cautious and keep it steady for a while

Lovely weekend of running here.
Friday was track league, a cracking 5k thrash. Ran OK, felt I had something in the legs right up until someone attacked me and I just couldn't hold on. Still got a PB for the distance though so can't complain to much.
Saturday was 4 miles to parkrun, a thrash round the course and then 6 miles home.
Sunday, well, Sunday was a just about perfect LSR. 18 miles at conversational pace on trails I'd not run on before. Autumn has arrived in the midlands and it was beautiful to be out, we even avoided the rain.

Well done all!

My first marathon was on Sunday in Newport. I’ve done longer runs but knew this would hurt - constant running on tarmac is brutal.

Ran with a friend who couldn’t walk a year ago due to chemotherapy in aid of his hospital. We were doing well and on for a 3:40 when it got tough 10k out. He was a bit broken but we stuck together and got it done in 3:47. A fantastic effort from the man.

I think I could have kept on for a 3:40, that’s not to say it wasn’t hurting. That’s wasn’t the point and teamwork won the day. I had to dig deep and it was mind over body, but we didn’t stop and didn’t walk any of it, constant running.

Really enjoyed the experience, but it’s a relentless run that just goes on and on and on.

Glutes and adductors sore but apart from that all is good in this old body.

Fair description of a marathon that is.
Good work, 3:40 for a first outing is very good going.

This knee injury is relentless...

Out for another 5k last night. It actually felt okay for the first 2 miles. Got to 3 miles and the pain came back, but this time a sharp shooting pain from the top of the calf into the back of me knee. I was finishing the run so walked back slowly. No pain today, but a bit of tightness. Think it's time for a scan...

Actually ran twice this week, a couple 4 mile loops, wanted to keep going on last nights 4 mile but running after going out for a meal didnt play well with my guts!
Imagine I will get a couple more in this week. Tempted to sack off the Saturday bike ride and get a couple hours trail running in.
Felt good to be back running, I’d missed it for a couple weeks

Well, OMM now cancelled so that's all my bigger races for the year done. Started with two main aims, added OMM in later but happy to have had a decent time at both Great Lakeland 3 Day and Lakes in a Day.

Dropping back on distance now and just keeping the legs spinning over the winter - back to the winter 1hr Orienteering series as my main fun running, first one of the 8-week series was last night in a local park and streets, ran 8.8km over the hour and got a top 25% finish which is pretty good for me.

Oh, if anyone's interested, I put a blog together from the Lakes in a Day ultra - http://pyrosyard.blogspot.com/2021/10/lakes-in-day-2021.html

I did that on holiday in Italy many years ago

Ditto many years ago in Crete. Each morning about 8+ miles up a very hilly route and back again before it got really warm (August) Stood me in good stead the week after I came back I won the county 10000m track champs on an unusually warm day 🙂

Not checked this thread for a while as I've been on holiday for half-term.  My most amusing/foolish DOMS experience from hills was a few days before the highest profile race I've ever participated in.  I qualified for the Half IronMan World Championships in Las Vegas in 2013, and the Tuesday before the Sunday race I took a trip to the Grand Canyon and had a little jog down to the river and back.  The next day after ~1500m of steep descending and back up again, I could barely walk, Thursday was I think worse 😮  Great prep indeed!

small fry compared to some, but set myself a target of 100km a month at the beginning of the year. ticked over 1000km on saturday morning. furthest I've ever run in year.

@jambo my target for the year was 1000km. Likely to get that done this month. Maybe 1000 miles next year.
So ran 10k last night, not super fast but really enjoyed it, feel like I’ve got a bit of the love back for running. Went for a 45 minute swim after which was a real nice warm down. I was planning on starting a running streak through November but not sure I want to run on riding days. I think I could but not sure I’m willing to sacrifice losing any ride quality by being tired. Which sort of makes me take a few days off a week

1000 miles works out around 20 a week. Doable but I ride 3 times a week, swim once and do yoga two times! I’m running out of time for it all! With ultra plans for next year things may have to change and I get more time on my feet.
It’s a tricky balance for sure. I’m a stone mason and some days are very physically exhausting.
I did swim after my 10k last night so maybe I get more into the double workout thing! I would love to run pre work but it would mean a 4am start to fit it in so not entirely sure I want that!

I also targeted 1000 miles, currently at 741 miles as of last night. Got some work to do in the next 2 months, but a good motivator. I do have the excuse of being wiped of my bike in June, so broken back, lacerated liver & broken ribs lost me 3 months and still tryingo get my mojo back.

I don't set any overall targets for a year, but as it is to the end of October I've done
- 1530km/950 miles cycling,
- 872km/541 miles walking/hiking, and
- 815km/506 miles of running
over the last 10 months. While I was targetting an Ultra this year, I still need to mix things up as I'm targetting an expedition Adventure Race next year so need to not focus solely on running.

Total volumes have been up and down each month depending on what I was aiming for, but my average month is 153km bike, 87km walk/hike and 82km running, plus a kayak trip or two, an hour or two of climbing/bouldering and a few sessions of yoga.

The more important part for me is that I'm 200+km up on on last year's total distance to date!

I think I should quite comfortably but unintentionally hit 1k miles for the year.

Middlesbrough 10k on Sunday, feeling the pre race nerves re seeking a pb.

@lunge that’s some mileage right there! Do you solely run or is there bike time as well? I’m not sure I could find the time to be out that much. What with work and diy etc
Fair play though!

Target here was 1,000km in the year and 30,000m of climbing - should manage both (although seriously struggling with IT band at the minute). I did 1,000km last year with 10,000m of climbing but since moving to Sheffield my hills have increased significantly!

I usually target 1000km as well - had to cram a lot in last December for 2020 but done it this year already. Think I’m on about 680miles so 1000miles is probably a bit of a stretch as like marksnook it’d mean losing too many biking days.

I'm at 4,303km of running, 29,823m of climbing, so significantly flatter than @dashed 😀 I did have a target of 6000km for the year, but I'm apparently 743km behind, so I think that's out the window!

@marksnook, Some bike, but in truth not much. I tend to cycle when I'm injured or tapering for an event and want to take some impact away from my legs, Strava suggests 700 miles on the bike.
If you break it down, it's actually that scary, 3000 miles is just over an hour of running a day (8 miles ish).
I've got a job with long hours, but no kids and a wife who knows I'm a better person if I run than if I don't. I guess I tend to prioritise running, if we're going out or away somewhere then my first thought is always "how can I fit a run in?"

Any fellow midlanders doing the Birmingham and District XC at Crewe next weekend? Seems like a suitable lumpy and muddy course to start the season, the fact they've suggested 12mm spikes as a minimum seems to suggest it will be a proper slop-fest.

This will be my first full year of running since starting in March 2020. Currently on 220 miles this year. 250 miles would be do-able if I get out twice a week every week, but June was the closest I got to doing that. Will see how I get on though 🙂

@didnthurt beginner runner here 🖐

Did c25k, all going well. Parkrun, then shin splints, so currently taking a couple weeks out until that settles.

Agreed, these guys are very impressive.

then shin splints

I found as a beginner that trainers were the main cause of my shin splints - and that correct shoes are a real must....

I'm tempted to try some minimal/barefoot shoes to slow me down and correct my form. But currently it's still tender so need to wait.

It was a lovely day on Saturday so I thought I'd go for a nice long steady run. Then I was informed by one of my daughters that she needed a lift and suddenly my window of opportunity was slashed to 40 minutes so I did a faster 4 mile run and missed my target time by two seconds FFS.

Still, the lovely weather suddenly turned torrential rain and wind so I was happy making it a shorter run.

And that brought up 183 miles for the year for me – but I lost 2 months to an injury and I am having a slow return to pre-injury miles.

Does anyone know if you can access a map mid run and it count towards the current workout or does one need to have the route started from the start of your run? I'm just trying to work out how to access a segment for a section I'm unfamiliar with.

Forerunner 235

(950 miles ytd) ☺️

Thanks.

@lunge yes, I can understand that. There's some interesting logic behind it. I thought even if I used it temporarily to help guide me in developing good form.

But then I look around and 99% on people are in "normal" running shoes, so surely that speaks volumes..

From what I understand, adopting the minimalist / zero drop shoe approach takes a long slow adaptation process, whereby the new shoes should be worn very minimally at first and slowly build up more time in them whilst still using conventional shoes. The time period will be dependant on the individual but I think it is months, and not just a couple. Going full bore too soon will undoubtedly lead to issues as per @lunge

Small sample size, but we have 200 ish people at our club.
1 of that 200 wears barefoot/minimalist shoes and he almost constantly has a niggle or an injury.
I'm not saying you need to be wearing huge, squishy shoes, I love a low drop/low cushioned shoe (like an old racing flat) for some runs, but there's a lot to be said for "normal" running shoes.

Really new to running and currently doing a Garmin couch to 5k. It's going ok, I'm on week 2 and up to just over 3k. I'm finding it just as hard as I'd imagine it to be. I try to do run at 5 min per kilometre.

At least my legs the next day have stopped feeling like they've been attacked with a baseball bat.

When does it become fun? 😉

@cynic-al I'll be at the Dava Way ultra this coming weekend. It's my final outing of what became a 10 race season in the end, more than I was expecting if I'd been asked last spring. As usual, I'll be on duty at the start, briefly at the mid-point and then providing medical cover at the finish line at the pavilion in the park in Forres. Enjoy your run and maybe see you there.

2 min PB on Sunday at Middlesbrough 10k. 45:33, so pretty happy with that. An earlier in the week niggle and then a race means I'm limping today. I'm now the fastest and slowest I've ever been.

Mrsheen I think it has to be accessed before you start ,as I had issues trying to find mine after I started my ultra but didn't want to mess with it on route as I didn't want to split it as it was only my 2nd ever 50km plus run

Really new to running and currently doing a Garmin couch to 5k. It’s going ok, I’m on week 2 and up to just over 3k. I’m finding it just as hard as I’d imagine it to be. I try to do run at 5 min per kilometre.

That's quite a fast pace for someone new to running, nothing wrong with that of course but you might want to slow down a bit while you're building up to 5k.

(And 2477km/88783m ytd 🙂 )

Was going to say something similar. Have a look at your local park run times (rather than some of the times posted on here) and you'll see 5 min/km is pretty fast, it'll probably put you in the top 25%. If you can do it easily then great, but if building up I'd slow down a bit. I've only started this year and have been trying a few different things. I've been trying deliberately slower runs, keeping the heart rate low, recently and my distances have pretty much doubled and I feel way fresher afterwards.

5 mins/km is roughly 8 mins/mile. That’s very good for a beginner and would put you about 30th out of 200 at my local parkrun.
I’d be slowing down a touch to about 5:30’s or I fear injury may be imminent.

@mrsheen I'm pretty sure you can start and stop a course at any point you want during your run, certainly can on my Fenix 5+. I know I changed the way I was course following during my Thames Path run with no issues, apart from the battery dying after 144km..

Thanks for the pointers. I'll try to back off the pace a bit in the running.

I'm only doing 3 runs a week which last less than 20 minutes apiece including warm up and warm down.

I'm only running on the flat and am wearing my Adidas Terrex Swift Solo shoes. They're not overly cushioned and nice and light which I like.

I swim twice a week (a mile breaststroke) and try to get out on my bike as much as I can. So my base fitness is alright, so assumed I'd adapt to running fairly quickly.

Not keen on getting injured but do want to progress, patience isn't one of strengths but will listen to advice.

Nearest park run to me is 10 miles away in Falkirk, not too keen to drive a 20 mile round trip for less than an hour's worth of exercise. So will keep plugging away until I'm good enough to run with some folks I know who run regularly. 👍

I've just started again over the last couple of months. I'm not entirely alien to running as I used to do a fair bit 10yrs or so back, and have always done shuttle runs as part of PT sessions.
I built up to a 5.75mile cross country which I did at the end of October, and I felt great after that.
>
Distance
5.72 mi
Pace
8:30 /mi
Time
48m 39s

and then had a go a a pavement run a few days later which I managed to do a bit quicker but boy did that beat my legs up. I thought the xc would be harder on the body but nope, tarmac hurts me more unless the extra pace did it, probably a bit of both tbh.
>
Distance
5.17 mi
Pace
7:50 /mi
Time
40m 35s

Didn't do anything for three days after that so now I know I need to back off a bit as I'm obvs trying to do too much too soon. Still not too shabby for the wrong side of 50.

Learning to run steady/easy pace rather than battering yourself each time you go out is a key skill to enjoying it IME. Save the hard efforts for when you want to really go for it. Means you can still go out for a run when you don't have the enthusiasm for a tough one.

I'm looking to get back into proper running over the winter after mostly zwifting/cycling for the past year or so. Getting bored with zwift TBH, it's the same thing time after time. Had a couple of runs in the lake district over the weekend and really enjoyed being outside though I did manage to trip and bang my knee quite hard. Got one month to get in decent shape for an upcoming 10k, then I'll be into the marathon training plan.

Was meant to go for a run tonight but I'm totally knackered from riding at the Hermitage, them trails really beat you up but they're so much fun!

This is something I'm just getting the hang of. Dropping the pace a bit means I can go further and feel pretty good the whole way. Great for enjoying your surroundings. I've been exploring the local area and getting some exercise. It's surprising how much is within running distance

I love running slow, just feels so relaxing! I read some stuff about running slower making you quicker long term as it builds base fitness. Probably explained that so it makes sense!

Feel like I’ve got my running mojo back a little so far this month. Also absolutely loving riding my bike though so there is a constant internal battle!

Just saw an Instagram post about the 496 challenge. Basically through January you run the amount km’s for the date so 1km on day one then 2km on day 2 and so on. It all adds up to 496km by the end of January. Not sure I will make it the whole month but I could get half way maybe

I saw this too.
The last week is pretty brutal, I run high mileages but even I’d struggle with 9 runs of half marathon and above on the bounce.
