Well in the absence of a parkrun on Saturday, went for a 5k run this afternoon, started out with an aim of 5:20 /km or better pace, was feeling comfortable slightly below that and ended up running a pb 5k of 25:39! 😁

[img] [/img]

Well happy with that, sub 25 min 5k should be doable in a couple of months (so long as running doesn't get banned!).

Popped out for half an hour this evening - no dog walkers out, which was good.

I'll be getting out as much as I can, before we go full lockdown.

Unofficial club run tonight. Not a club run, as they’re not allowed but a ew of us met at the same time as ever and did a slow 8 miles. Weird atmosphere around but good to be out in the fresh air.

Get them in while you can.
No running for us probably until after Easter in Spain. Best dig out the turbo.

As suspected, flights out cancelled so the Newlands was off for me but looks like it wouldn't have gone ahead, FRA advising race organisers to cancel (I assume advising means ordering).

I rode to work and back today, which is not prohibited but I felt rather antisocial so I'll have to think about WFM.

Best of luck Bob, I'll resort to kettlebells and HIIT if the expected lockdown comes.

Reckon it's about 50 yards round my garden. Laps. Ooft. 🤣

Aye, no way it would have run, everything else is off.

Well done @ta11pau1, nothing like a PB to cheer you up in uncertain times 🙂

Like @bob_summers I'm stuck at home, with no running 🙁 Still, using the turbo everyday seems to be helping to keep the weight off, so hopefully if and when we get to head out again it won't be as bad as it could be!

I’m going to carry on running outside, whatever happens. Think all this fuss will have greater impact on mental health which is longer lasting than a bit of flu.

Physio has told me to start running again, only a couple runs a week at around a mile each was his advice
Knee pain is easing so hoping I can build some distance back up. Not planning on doing much riding over the coming months incase I crash and all that

So far UK guidance is to keep exercising (maintaining social distancing) which I hope continues - the longer term impacts of a nation sat on their sofas for 14 weeks hardly bear thinking about! If we do go into full lockdown then I've still got 2 dogs to walk - which I'll obviously be doing at a brisk pace in shorts and trainers...

What if dogs aren’t allowed out ?

Honestly.

Just keep running outside and take normal precautions.

🤷‍♂️

Just mind where you blow your snot rockets 😁

Mind you I tend to wait until there's no-one else around anyway.

I’ve got a beard so any snot rockets have kind of been caught before they leave my personal space! Or I’m no good at snot rockets, either way!

Taking the dog out while running might be the only thing to keep me sane!

I've had one of our dogs out at lunch time for a run. He's a little shit and is seemingly getting a bit unfit as I had to drag him round quite e a bit of the run. He soon perked up when he saw another dog though (his modus operandi - he loves to think he's top dog and will let everyone know he is, despite the fact that he patently isn't). One of the problems I'm finding with people being off work / working from home / self isolating etc is that they are now out and about when they normally aren't and I seem to be falling over them - so much for social distancing!

Outdoors (or even indoor) exercise isnt an option for me. Fell at the weekend whilst skiing and ski stayed on..... Meaning boot bent towards my shin with force and tore my calf muscle.... lower leg, even ankle multiple colours and moving around is very painful. hohum

Some of you may know that I'm involved with the Bob Graham Club. We've been asked about whether attempts on the Round should go ahead so we've come up with some guidance which may be found at http://www.bobgrahamclub.org.uk/

At the moment that's probably the least worst solution.

Another hill repeats session, this time with a HR strap.

Much better for HRM, 120bpm recovery just before starting the interval, 170+bpm at the end.

[img] [/img]

With optical sensor I was peaking at 156, so nearly 20bpm higher! Only issue is my garmin is now saying my fitness is going down... No, it's just my heart rate is now more accurate!

Works both ways for me, reads low when in bursting myself, but reads high when I'm out for a sociable trot with the wife. Odd.*

*that was on vivoactive 3, vivoactive 4 arrived yesterday, seems to be more accurate, although I've only tried it on the turbo, Joe wicks workouts, and 30 laps of the garden! 🤣

The strap is without a doubt more accurate, and faster to pick up changes, I wear it when cycling so it doesn't bother me and it's pretty comfy.

172bpm felt much more like it for peak HR, was properly blowing on the final 2 intervals!!

Nipped up the old public school for a run at tea time, 24 laps is 5k, quite good actually to get a rhythm going.

Slightly better than 86 laps of the garden! 😂

From the 'one a day' thread, I did my first trail run on Saturday, 8.75km. I'm a convert!

I will definitely be doing trail runs for my longer/slower runs, was pretty fresh at the end so 10k within the next 2-3 weeks shouldn't be an issue.

Also did a 5k 'tempo' run this morning before work, 25:49 for 5k which is 10 seconds slower than my PB - and I had a couple of walk rests for 20 seconds or so mid run!! Yet was able to push it to 4:30 /km pace for the last 200m!

Good work Paul! Looks like you're progressing faster than I am!
Heeding the 'don't drive to exercise' line ( rights and wrongs to one side ) I ran from home last night. Fortunately overcast and a bit nippy so not too many people about. It's pretty flat compared to what has become normal for me since Xmas, of around 75 or 100m climbing in 30 mins. Was pleased to do 25.06 for 5k and 40m short of 6k in 30 mins. Would have been nice to break those, but it leaves me a target for Thursday. 🙂
Dull route though 🙁

First run in 10 years today, 2.5 miles done and still a turbo trainer session to do this afternoon. If one thing positive happens from lockdown i will be fitter at the end hopefully.

Howdy runners, joggers & shufflers. Hope you're finding some comfort via the trail and trainer? Almost 3 weeks off with a bug (that one? who knows?). Tried a 2 mile shuffle after 2 weeks and falling asleep on the couch. Left it another week. Boy was I grateful to get back out and empty my head. Though the trails weren't empty. Brilliant to see new people out exercising, there's a certain irony there I'm sure but terrific people have an outlet. Lucky to have forest/hill on my doortstep.

Enjoying the elaborate dances you sometimes get to maintain the 2m - diving into hedges, radiusing round each other, sliding down dusty banks. Now poking fun at myself at the daft efforts to maintain an unbroken set of monthly '2000m climbing challenges'. I always tell people getting into it to forget about watches and stats ...except me 🙂

Stay strong everyone, enjoy your run, just keep away from me 🙂

Cheers Stever!
Locked down since March 15th with about another 2 weeks looking likely unless it gets pushed back again. No govt sanctioned exercise allowed here, so combined with the ankle sprain in Jan means I've barely run this year, not that it matters as everything I entered is cancelled now (except a trail mara in June but I really doubt that'll go ahead).
I'm forcing myself to ride turbo for 45 mins a day and even that's a struggle, but I would like to come out of this at least able to run up the hill to my local trail loop, so that's the carrot. Infernal contraption. Haven't even got a garden I can run round!

Stay safe all

Well since this implosion of the world, over the past 3 weeks, i've run every weekday morning with the dog, somewhere between 5 & 10km. She's 18 months old now so a good age & it forces me to do something i'm definitely not a fan of. I can run at a reasonable pace, but I still stick it in the same camp as road riding (i.e. not fun) but it is keeping me sane, whilst stuck at a desk all day at home, working.

I bloo*y well better be fitter by the end of this all. Doing weights 3 times a week & still riding at the weekends.

Now if only I can find a way to padlock the kitchen, to stop grazing.

Good stuff hobnob!

An hour-ish of HIIT every day for me, I'll defo be all round fitter, mibbe running will suffer a bit, but I'll get that back.

Mogrim, I managed to get one of the few argos had left for delivery, £280, I'm not expecting it to be great, but it'll keep the wife happier. 🙂

I'm in awe of those who can run for more than a minute without collapsing, I've downloaded the Couch to 5k and done my first 2 runs. I miss being able to change gear or freewheel when I get puffed out, I felt totally crippled after the first run, even my shoulders hurt so I'm now doing yoga as well. I'm expecting big improvements when I get back on the bike

We were all their once, I certainly was. Stick with it, you’ll find it becomes very enjoyable in time. Stretch we’ll, and stretch regularly, it’s invaluable.
Re. Bike fitness, it certainly translates, though for me the main benefit was weight loss.

Been out twice with my two 10 yr old girls this week for our 'daily exercise' for short runs of 1.6 miles - although I know they are both competent runners, I was quite pleased that they both managed to run it all without stopping at 9min 30 pace.

Let's see how much that comes down over the next few months as they want to carry on (they prefer it to Joe Wicks on YouTube) 🙂

Been getting back into my running (again 🙄) after getting back feeling good prior to my first half which sadly never went ahead due to some life issues and then lost all drive (recurring theme for me unfortunately).

Anyway. I got myself a nice welcome back today. A nice bit of nipple rub. Bit of blood in the shower. Smarted a tad!

Despite that. Feels good to be running again. A lot busier on the roads and trails now though!

And definitely keep at it faerie.

I've not long completed C25K, started mid December.

I found that my pre-existing fitness from MTB helped my out in the first 2-3 weeks, but there was definitely a run (week 4, run 1 I believe, the first time you're running more than walking at 16 mins running and 15.5 mins walking) where my fitness ran out!! Make sure to take it slowly though it's as much about building up your leg/ankle muscles as it is building your fitness. I found it was hard to run for more than a couple of minutes at a time, and when starting you WILL think "there's no frickin' way I'm gonna be running for 30 minutes in 8 weeks time!!"...

But... you will. 😀

So, I completed the last C25K run on the 8th March, and started on 15th December. To show how far you can come in a short space of time, I'm now running sub-26 minute 5k's, and did a 8.75k trail run the other day. Aiming for a 10k trail run either this weekend or next. This morning's run was a nice 6.5k trail run.

10k (trail) run, completed. About a 70/30 mix of dirt/tarmac, not huge elevation at 109m but you know what, I could have gone further...

Loads of people out today though, families/dogwalkers/kids on bikes - too many in my opinion as a lone runner avoiding the most used routes...

I went out with MiniMonkey this morning, we did a very leisurely 4.5 miles in the sun. She seems to really enjoy the running pram, and looks super cool in her sunglasses. Think I've run more in the last couple of weeks than the rest of the year put together.

Ah yes, sweat. On that theme, I need to order a headband and some proper running underwear as I'm both suffering with sweat in the eyes and chafing down there when running! Been trying to order some cheap ones off decathlon but they seem to hit their daily order limit before I've remembered to look...

Any other alternatives? Just a cheap sweat/headband will do, preferably one that doesn't make me look like John McEnroe...

Just had a consultation with a physio re my Achilles which has had tendonopathy (not tendonitis) since January, and hadn't been getting better - turns out rest is not what it needs. Hope to be building back up to my 19.03 parkrun of last year.

I started couch to 5k in feb. I too got mid way and struggled a bit. Managed 4.8 miles (slowly) last night. It does get easier. Lost a bit of weight and found hill walking much easier. Taking it steady didn't even bother my 51 year old knees.

Good work Paul. Following my 25 5k on Tuesday I had another go on a similar role in Thursday and did just over 24, and over 6k in 30. Well happy with that. Nothing by a lot of people's standards, in terms of either speed or distance, but for somone who's never really run, to go from zero to sub 25 made me well cuffed. 🙂

Yep, Decathlon running boxers are bang on, no issues there, they’ve been fine for me for marathons.
I’m intrigued how you’re still in tights though, anything over 3 degrees and my pins come out, hate hot legs when running.
And agree with buffs for headbands, or buy a visor or 2 from Decathlon for the full look!

More or less back up to the pace I was at before blowing my ankle up on Boxing Day.

I've been in my tights since I started in December, if it's below 6 degrees or so I'll wear my merino l/s top base layer, and if it's 3-4 or cooler then the gloves go on! I'd rather be a little too warm than too cold, cold hands are the worst as you're sweating loads but the hands are like ice cubes!

I won't be ditching the tights until I can get some boxers though, normal ones chafe loads so I've been going commando under the tights, my shorts only have a mesh liner so I don't fancy the junk being THAT exposed to the fresh air!!!

They're shut now, but Primark lined shorts are absolutely tremendous. 12 quid, I did all my running in them last year, including 4 ultras.

Can't recommend them highly enough.

I guess everyone is different, I’d rather be too cold than too warm with the exception of hands. Under 6 is a thin base layer (not merino, way to sweaty), and gloves, the legs come out over 3.
I use arm warmers a lot this time of year too, means I can pull them down as I warm up.
The winter race look of vest, arm warmers and gloves is one to behold!

Agreed - their stuff is great (although you generally need a size bigger than normal) - the shorts are so comfortable and I got a winter top (not a waterproof) which is spot on. You can get a year’s worth of gear for the same price as a branded pair of shorts.

I'm not a big fan of Buffs for warm weather - I find them too warm as you need to double them over so many times. I've got an Inov-8 cap that I like though as it wicks the sweat onto the brim and sort of providing a cooling effect. It certainly stops the sweat dripping into your eyes. And you can just chuck it through wash as well.

I decided I was going to run 10k every day this week - I know it's a stupid idea and I should be having rest days and not jumping my mileage up so quickly (normally around 25-30k a week) but needed some sort of challenge to get me motivated. 3 days in and feels ok. Not sure if I'll get to 7 days before old niggling injuries start to show but will back off if i think I'm going to hurt anything as I need a bit of sanity running over the next few weeks...

I hope everyone is managing to stay safe while keeping up their running. Obviously I'm not run commuting, but still heading out for a loop most mornings. I now get up at 5 to get my run in before 7 at which point the wife has an hour to herself before taking charge of the kids as I retreat up to the loft office. Fortunately it's nice and quiet out and about at that time!

You may remember I ran a 5k with the buggy last summer, which Guinness didn't recognise as a record. I finally got around to putting the video together, which is here if my embed doesn't work

https://www.youtube.com/embed/fc4nbSBKUYc

Clearly an embed fail - can anyone educate me? 😀

I use a visor for autumn days when it's not too sunny, or for triathlons 🙂

At the height of summer I prefer a full cap, despite having a decent head of hair you can still end up getting burnt and I'd rather not get skin cancer...

For videos just paste the link, IIRC:

WTF. 16:11 5k, whilst pushing a buggy.

*feels woefully inadequate.

Good work.

I managed an 8k trail run this morning before starting my work shift from home, will try and do a 10k trail run on Saturday or Sunday, I'm trying to up the mileage I'm doing while sticking to 3x runs per week. 10k at the weekend will make it just under 25k for the week.

I'm really getting the itch for some trail running (always do after getting a fitness back) but stuck in town at the moment. Trying to mix up and plan routes so I don't get bored or see too many people is an interesting challenge.

If anyone needs new shoes there's a sale on at Nike at the moment, and you can also use the code APRIL30 for another 30% off. Brings Pegasus 35 or 36s down to just over 50 quid.

Any golf courses in town? I like to run the 18 holes at one of the multitude of courses round here when it's pissing, all the when the golfists are indoors nursing a brandy, it's great training as it's full of little ups n downs, like a little interval session, but on a good surface too.

Saying that, our local courses are full of retarded dog walkers atm, with zero recall or control.

Nah parks are the best I can manage in range, I just need to get fitter so I can go further.

Faffed around and now all the cheap Pegasuses (Pegasi?) are gone. On the plus side, tried doing some intervals tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thoroughly enjoyed intervals? I think you did them wrong! 😀

Our club has a 10k time trial every month that’s now gone virtual. The offroadies came up with a contour challenge - how much ascent you could squeeze into 10k from home without using the same climb twice. 1896’ for me but not good enough for the win 🙂

Keep it going (safely) folks!

Another lacklustre fun from me.

Head/body/heart not in it. Not sure if the current situation plus other home stresses are just getting to me but think I’ll take a rest for several days and reset.

@RDL-82, when I lose some running mojo I find just going out and having fun helps.
Ditch the watch, find some empty trails and just run for fun. If you want to walk, walk, if you want to sprint, do so.
But just have fun.

@stever We used to do similar on bikes in a Strava group, Monday lunchtime climb challenge. Basically cram the most metres of ascent possible in one hour from home or work (no repetition restrictions), good fun getting creative with the routes.

A month now of lockdown enforced non running, it's going to feel like starting from scratch again! I only got into running last year and it was so unnatural, it took most of a year to feel somewhat like a runner. This year was meant to work on the base (80,000m climbing in 2019!) and aim to finish in the top half of races rather than worrying about making the first time cut. Instead I sprained my ankle and got quarantined 😅

There is a good chance I’ll do my first 50+ mile week this week. Turns out that having loads of time and diving out for an hour or so every day means it’s quite easy to rack the miles up.
