@Dashed Good luck - hope you're on the mend and back to getting some km in?!
No runs over the w/e for me (kids/family/wine) so back out there today if i can slide out of work for 45 mins.
Severe pain very concentrated on my lower abs, right above my pubic bone, most odd… Hips were hurting too, not ideal
Excuse me if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs but I had those symptoms and was diagnosed as having tight IT bands. Have you been on the bike more lately as that can tighten things up in my experience?
I rode a total of 136km last year, and have ridden less than 40km this year, so that's certainly not the issue!
I'll go and see my physio/rehab guy and see if he has any bright ideas too, but at the moment it's rather debilitating, and I seem to have gone downhill at an alarming rate 😮
on the bike - resistance climbing sessions - standing
if you dont believe me go do a hard running session then try and climb a hill on a bike the next day
Nearly ended my self the first time i stood up to climb the lecht after a hard week of running.
its basically a set of body weight leg presses.
how ever - is that more benificial than Squats , deadlifts, lunges and core work - unlikely - especially when done on a static trainer - is it more fun ....absolutely.
Frequently hit the road to the sky on Zwift as its much more interesting than farting around with a kettle bell.
TF. Fingers crossed you get it sorted.
I got my blood test results back today, and the one which caused concern was my Vitamin D level. Apparently 50 is a healthy level, and I score 17 😮
Going to be on a high dose of Vit D for 10 weeks now! Not necessarily an instant fix but does go a reasonable way to explain my symptoms. Hopefully I can get back training shortly.
Wife tells me there’s a view that we should all be taking vitamin d due to the lack of sunlight in winter.
Fingers crossed TF!!
I was gonna express my surprise that someone who must spend a lot of time outdoors running would have a Vit D deficiency, then I realised almost all my own running is done in the dark.
Hope it does the job anyway.
Anybody following or know anybody participating in the Montane Spine Race? Seems like an epic affair. Mused over the route and some parts look great for a day adventure.
I assume you told them of the pain above your pubic bone etc.
They didn't give any further diagnosis other than the vit d deficiency ?
Vit deficiencies - especially really low can often be an issue with absorption.
Unless of course your a vegan/vegitarian in which case it's much harder to get a good vit d source
Got Gloucester half marathon on Sunday. Entered it straight after a half I did in October, hoping it would motivate me to keep up my running fitness through winter.
Nope. Haven’t done anything other than other things that interest me during winter, being zwift and indoor swimming. Will go along anyway and see if I can get round.
Anyone else doing it?
The blood test was the GP's first step. Now I'm reading up about Vitamin D deficiency and wondering whether I could have a pelvic stress fracture, but I'm probably being overly dramatic! Going to see my sports rehab guy shortly and get his opinion.
I'm told that Vitamin D is stored in the body, so shouldn't be seeing dramatic sudden drops because of going into winter. I run outdoors for over 2 hours a day and during the summer this is obviously in sunlight, wearing shorts and vest, bald head, no sun-cream, so should be absorbing a decent amount of UV then.
I did dabble with veganism late 2018 with the hope that it would help my running, but I didn't see any improvement so knocked it on the head after a few months.
I've switched to cycling my commute, and not seeing any ill effects from riding, feeling absolutely fine. I was watching this yesterday and the explanation of the importance of an off-season certainly hit home

It's further up this thread, and there's another thread here:

And yeah, definitely epic!

Vit D not only from UV and at this time of year can largely be brought in through a balanced diet.
Its much harder to get(but not impossible) if your vegan.
But irrelevent if your not vegan 😀
What a terrible morning for a run. Ran to the train station (only 6km) and the rain got wetter and wetter as i went. Trails were water logged - not ideal in the pitch black. The heating in my carriage not working ensuring i was freezing to death for an hour. Now on a mission to dry my kit out before the return journey tonight...thankfully the forecast looks a bit better for tonight so i might be able to tack on a few extra km.
Winter miles for summer smiles djambo!.
@Nobeerinthefridge I hope you're right! Was glad i did it as soon as I got out of the shower 😉

You won't get much Vitamin D from your diet, unless you eat loads of oily fish. Most people are probably deficient over the winter. Vegan is not really relevant (soya milk and margarine is fortified anyway).
NHS advice is adults should consider supplements over autumn and winter. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/
Interesting run in to work this morning. Started steady and then it happened again. About 400m along the another runner joined the canal. He was going a little quicker than I was. So obviously I had to chase him.
Cue going 1:30 per mile faster than a normal commute to not only catch him but also to make sure he couldn’t keep up once I’d gone past. He may not have known he was in a race, but he definitely lost…
Which is all well and good bar the fact that I planned to run the long route home tonight (12 miles) and I am now sat at my desk with aching legs.
I am an idiot. But I did win…
I often get very tired and get "diagnosed" with Vit D deficiency, but I'm not convinced. Just think it's my age and a hectic life - work, kids, work, kids, other stuff...
Lunge: Great victory, I'm sure it was quite a spectacle.
What's everyone up to at the weekend? If anyone fancies it I'm going to Victoria Dock Parkrun on Saturday in the old East End of Landan. The course is flat, pavement, wide and with not that many runners, so I'm going for a PB. Not exciting like a mountain run, but it keeps me entertained.
I can't quite believe I'm writing this, as 4 months ago I would have laughed at someone who suggested it, but I'm going for a sub 20 minute run. Currently on 20:34 at a muddy Nonsuch on New Year's Day after 4 hours sleep, so who knows? But, as we all know with running/sport you just never know when you're going to have a good or bad day. It might be a failure, but I'm going to bury myself and see what happens. Did 25 minutes of fast-up, slow-down hill reps last night to prepare me, and hopefully my legs should recover in time.
TF: What did your doc prescribe as a high dose of Vit D? I've just started on some 4000iu Vitamin D3
I'm doing 'No Repeat January'. I lost my mojo at the end of last year as I was just banging out the same three or four routes over and over again. This month I'm doing a different route each time. Usually just adding in a new section / hill or doing a circuit the 'wrong' way round.
So far, so good. I certainly seem happier to get out the door.
Standard Saturday for me.
3.5 miles to parkrun
RD at Dudley parkrun, come and say hello!
10 miles home.
Sunday follows a similar theme.
1.5 miles to junior parkrun
Marshal at junior parkrun
5 miles home.
That’ll take me to 40 ish miles for the week which is about where I want to be for the moment.
Root - you have far more natural ability than me to be aiming for sub 20 after a few months! Good luck!
@ root-n-5th
You'll absolutely smash your PB on some flat tarmac, I can pretty much guarantee. A quick scan of the first finish times for the gents and ladies indicates the course is a good bit quicker, although looking at the course record, it's 14:55 set by the Kiwi Paul Martelletti (did I mention that I beat him at York 😀 ) at Victoria Dock, and a whole 1s slower at Nonsuch, set by Kojo Kyreme - that's him trying to massage out some cramp as I passed him on the Embankment at the 2018 London Marathon 🙂

My son wants to do his first junior parkrun on Sunday, so I've registered him and printed him a barcode, and we're off to Wimbledon Park. Hopefully he'll get all the way round. He's only just turned 4 so will be one of the very youngest, so fingers crossed he doesn't get discouraged by much bigger and faster kids shooting off and not being able to keep up.
@ slowpuncheur
I'm on a 10 week course of what says 20,000 on the box, 3 times a week. I'm a little confused by the units, I don't have it in front of me know, but from recollection it says each does is 10,000 the RDA, so pretty high 😮
I went to see my sports rehab/physio guy last night, and he has diagnosed the issue as being an aggravated adductor attachment. Should be treatable with self massage and some specific core exercises. He doesn't think I'll do any damage getting back into running very soon, which is very encouraging 🙂 I'm still going for a pelvis X-ray this afternoon just as a precautionary measure, but fully expecting it to all look fine.
So then. In the Nike store yesterday and tried on a pair of VaporFly’s. Oh. My. God. They feel amazing, and fast stood still. I’ve never felt my credit card twitch so hard. I fear a purchase now is inevitable.
It would seem I failed to actually tag anyone in my previous posts, so in case you haven't seen
@turboferret and @shortbread_fanylion
Thanks, I'll see how it goes. No excuses on the course - flat, wide, tarmac and quiet. Not sure about natural ability, just a stubborn attitude towards making myself suffer and keep on running. I'll probably go out too fast and blow up on 4km, but we'll see. It's not really important but I do find that I enjoy going for targets and goals - adds motivation for me but I realise it's not for everyone. I just feel that I need to get a few achievements when I still can and before I get too old. Also, it would be nice to eventually beat Chris Boardman's time...
I'm trying to get the family to do the parkrun. I volunteered last week as a marshall and took my 15 year old daughter with me and she seemed to enjoy it. Was great cheering people on and it made me think that the people suffering for 45 minutes out there have a much tougher morning than the guys breezing home in 17 minutes, although the guy in second was giving it everything. Hopefully the parkrun karma will be with me tomorrow, about which I am already nervous, embarrassingly.
I can confirm – believe the hype
Currently the most popular shoe in my tri club, too.
You are not helping. There's a small discount on them at a couple of stores too. Pink or green?
I would go for green, but I'm a shy and retiring type.
Looks like the Vaporfly shoes might be banned anyway - unfair advantage. Silly move as they will go straight to number 1 and all the kids will be wanting them.
Aren't shoes an unfair advantage over hobbling around in bare feet?
What's unfair about them (compared to other shoes)? Or are we talking about the ones with the carbon thing in them?
Don't be starting arguments Root! this is one of the few positive threads on here. 🙂
Started back with the first 5k lunch run of 2020 today, lovely day for it, windy, muddy, but dry and sunny. Happy days.
What’s unfair about them (compared to other shoes)? Or are we talking about the ones with the carbon thing in them?
The carbon plat in them offers some propulsion as a spring which could be argued as being illegal. There's also thoughts on the stack height.
I think they'll allow the current version but try to stop it there to allow others to catch-up.
I'm pretty sure there are different models of Vaporfly, not just the carbon plate ones.
Edit: I'm wrong 🙂
Wouldn’t dream of starting an argument!
Yes the one’s with the carbon spring in the sole. All good fun.
Good news TF. Best to take up the offer of an xray though.
Sorry but I *think* the Nike website has 20% of code somewhere. JAN20 possibly? Tempting..
Interesting to see how this develops and I suspect it is not the off the shelf shoes but some with additional mods that are being considered.
Other shoes have a similar carbon plate and stack height such as the "Hoka Carbon" which have been around for ages and I have a pair (they are actually unworn as I bought them a while ago hoping to race in them if I ever get fit again) stiff soles are very helpfull for me as I have arthritis in one large toe joint...
Interesting to see how this develops and I suspect it is not the off the shelf shoes but some with additional mods that are being considered.
Agree with that, the AlphaFly that Kipchoge ran sub-2 in were apparently full of carbon springs and other oddities, I suspect they may be trying to stop that.
@surfer.. how are you getting on with that lower back pain? I remember your thread a while ago. Was it tight/knotted gluteus medius as I suggested? I'm certain that has been the cause of my pain for the last few months which is now subsiding thankfully. I've been rolling the area with a large foam roller twice a day and using a myofascial release ball on it three times a day plus stretching and generally keeping the area moving about as much as possible.
Looking forward to my 4mile xc run home from work in an hour - I started last week, now running three times a week again for the first time in ages.
Much better thanks. Managed a couple of 20+ mile weeks and did a Parkrun in 24:04.... 2 weeks later 22:45 so looking to use them as hard runs and see how much under 20 mins I can get..... still a niggle but doesnt seem to get much worse with the runs but my fitness is unbelievably bad.. I did find that "bridge" ecercises helped a lot.
Good luck with your comeback 🙂
Just back from my first run in the hills in about 2 months - muddy, cold and rather good fun!
Interested to see whether the IAAF or whoever ban carbon plates in running shoes at it was the same argument that was tried to ban disabled runners with blades from running against able-bodied?
If I may be allowed to drag the conversation downstairs again, what are you gentlemen using for undies?
I have previously worn running shorts with integrated liner, but now need some separate synthetic undies to go with some other garments.
Are the £4 ones from Decathlon decent enough?
I personally think that the inserts in shoes should be steel, quick release and 26”. Sorted. Carbon is the work of the devil I tell you.
I got a pack of 3 “compression” under shorts that are a bit like thin cycling shorts. Quite cheap from amazon, wasn’t expecting much but I find them, well it’s hard to describe, but I just don’t notice them at all. Keeps the bits in place but don’t squeeze too much. Medium was compression, but I went large for a gentle caress.
Will have a look, ta.
I don't mind the bits swinging about, it's the thigh chaffage that's the problem.
I suppose a link would help:

Are the £4 ones from Decathlon decent enough?
They are for me. They don’t chafe and hold everything where it should be. They’re all I use.
Decathlon ones here too. Size up quite small I think but very good.
These are great, done lots of really long runs in them (BG etc) with no issues:
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/kiprun-mens-tight-run-shorts-id_8500812.html
I have some rather expensive part merino Runderwear undies, and the 5-pack for a tenner of synthetic running briefs I got from eBay are just as good at a tiny fraction of the price
Are the £4 ones from Decathlon decent enough?
Yes, no chafe in any of the ultras I did in them, they're great value.
The best shorts I have running wise are the Primark lined ones, they're fantastic, well fitted, stretchy and don't need undies.
7 or 8 quid well spent.
Re shorts, I have several pairs of Decathlon’s that they no longer make that are brilliant. Thankfully, some very short ASICS that I found in Sport Direct are a very good replacement.
Didn't know people ran in undercrackers. Every day a school day etc
I like 118 118 short shorts, Spyro do a good pair (it's an own brand from a Spanish Decathlonalike) but hard to find otherwise.
Are the £4 ones from Decathlon decent enough?
Another vote for them.
Didn’t know people ran in undercrackers
They're good with lyra 3/4s, and the most recent Decathlon shorts don't have an inner short. You wouldn't need them with the older-style shorts with a mesh inner to support your bits 🙂
Cheers for all the pants tips folks.
More Mile boxer shorts are pretty good as well. Bit longer than the Decathlon boxer. Cheap enough.
https://moremile.co.uk/mens/more-mile-7-inch-mens-boxer-short-grey-mm2963.html
I wear them with tights or tracksters etc. All of my shorts have an inner liner, so no need for underwear.
@surfer
excellent, that's great to hear, glad you've got yer feet back in your trainers.
Things are going very well for me atm. I did the 4mile run home yesterday, very muddy cross country, tough ground conditions & carrying a 6.5kg rucksack in 37.5min so very pleased with that. It's only the second time I've run carrying the rucksack - and I'm only 5'4" weighing 60kg so it's quite a lump for me to have on my back.
Tuesdays run was a quicker 3.5mile mostly on tarmac, and last Sunday I did a long muddy xc 12miler but that was more a mix of brisk walking and slow jogging, taking me 2hrs44min door to door - not worried about the time at all, just happy to be able to complete the distance atm.
Just out of interest, what are peoples views on running with a rucksack, is it damaging at all? I feel okay carrying it and although it feels a bit of a lump it doesn't feel like I'm struggling. I had energy left for a couple of sets of press ups and squats (with the rucksack) and then did 25min yoga when I got home. Feel okay today.
After a week of no exercise due to the lurgy I determined to get out for a trot with the dogs. Schlepped across 6 miles of slutchy, boggy moorland. Wasn’t rally enjoying it and was brooding about various shit elements of my life. I cut back through the local cemetery and slammed down on what turned out to be icy tarmac. Grazed and bruised but gave the collar bone a bit of a test and got away with it! Strangely this made me a bit happier about the whole run. Weirdo.
Got a lovely 10 miles in before 9am today, great start, was almost spring like.
I wear them with tights or tracksters etc. All of my shorts have an inner liner, so no need for underwear.
Interesting. I tend to wear Decathlon boxers under all my shorts, liner or not. I find the liner does not give me the support and comfort I like.
New to this thread, but just wanted to share some positive vibes. A good thing happened to me this morning and I'm absolutely buzzing about it!
I'm 55 and got into the running habit after joining the army as a boy soldier at 16 and serving for 23 years. I carried on after I left, for personal fitness (physical and mental) and "me time". I was never anything other than average, I ran a few marathons and lots of halves but never ran competitively (except against myself) but mostly just loved pounding the streets and trails on my my own. Running was a big part of my life. It was part of who I was.
About 4 years ago my knees started to hurt when running and then I went skiing for the first time and really screwed them! I had to stop running completely. I had an MRI which showed lots of wear and tear and did some physio which didn't do much. I was able to cycle and hill walk, but there was just something about the mechanics of running that would cause my knees to swell and really hurt within a few hundred yards.
So I gave up on it, and resigned myself to never running again. I focused on mtb, which I only took up few years ago and to get myself fitter I did the mtb fitness 12 week program. There are loads of leg exercises in there including lots of strength, single leg stuff to correct imbalances and wobble board/bosu ball stuff to strengthen tendons and improve balance. It really seemed to work. I finished the program but got into the gym habit and carried on with a lot of focus on leg strengh. I started tentatively jogging on the treadmill, gradually increasing distance but still only doing up to 3 or 4 km. My knees felt good.
Anyway... too much waffle. Today I entered my first ever park run, my first proper run in nearly 4 years, shitting myself in case my knees imploded. They didn't. It was fine. It was harder than I expected, but about about half way round I really settled into it and even pushed myself a bit. I was 3rd in my age category and 27th out of a field of 111.
I'm quite chuffed with that, but much, much more chuffed about the prospect of having running back in my life. I don't want to get carried away, still scared my knees are going to let me down, but maybe, just maybe I've got a bit of running in me yet!
@Keva
Assuming the rucksack fits well and isn't bouncing around, it's just a bit of extra resistance in my view. I generally run with a small ultra-sack for a good portion of the year and it hasn't done me any harm (latest wobble not withstanding 😀 ) Sure, my intervals won't be quite as quick as they might be without it, but I'll still be getting the same training effect.
Had a small low-key XC race today, the first since getting my various diagnoses. I started with the view that I might pull out after 1 of 2 laps if I was feeling crap. There was 1 serious looking guy who I sat on the shoulder of, with the intention of dropping towards the end, but actually the reverse happened 😮 I was starting to blow with about half a mile to go, and knowing what condition my body is in currently I took the decision to let him go rather than hang on until the bitter end. The first time I haven't won this race, but looking back, I was still 2 minutes quicker than last year, so clearly the competition has improved! Glad to be back again, even if the cup won't be engraved with my name this year!
Blokeuptheroad, brilliant, well done fella!. 😊
^ what he said! 👍
My lad expressed an interest in junior parkrun, so we headed off to Wimbledon Park this morning. Grass was very wet and muddy, and he didn't show any inclination to actually run, so we walked about 800m before he decided he'd had enough! Hopefully he'll want to return, and with better weather he might actually enjoy it and get a bit further a bit quicker 🙂
Blokeuptheroad - great stuff, keep it up.
@turboferret - that’s the best way to do it I reckon - don’t push them as that will put them off.
Took the 4 and 10 year olds out on their bikes today with mrs. Missed a Richmond Park run but it was a great day out. Mud, ice and a beer.

I was volunteering at our local Junior parkrun yesterday and it was hard work for all there. I don't blame your lad for dropping out at all, it's a much more fun event in the summer.
I did the Essar 4 villages half at Helsby yesterday. It was an English masters qualifier and having just moved into the v45 cat I thought I might have a decent chance.
Despite a new pb (1:13:47) I was only 5th V45 and it is top 4 that qualify for the masters (I was 4th on chip time, but not sure if it's gun or chip that counts for the selection).
Anyway, quite a decent pb and I wasn't wearing vaporfly Next%, like most of the others seemed to be, so a moral victory 🙂
Thanks for asking. I did run and it was a beautiful morning and a good trip to a new parkrun, the first one outside Nonsuch. In a large field of about 250 I started quite near the front after a too short warm up, and we went off pretty fast, probably too fast for me. I pegged it back a bit and tried to hold the pace, dipped at 3km but picked it up again to the end. Course knowledge is a great asset I now know, as I started the dash for home thinking I was almost there, but had to run another 200m after doubling back. Held on to the end with a 20:27 on my watch, officially 20:29 so a Pb by 5 seconds. Not what I was hoping for but I found it quite tough on the monotonous flat pavement and think I prefer the variety of an XC style run. Also, it was measured at 5.01km whereas Nonsuch always comes out at about 4.9km. My pace was 5 seconds a km faster. An improvement.
It’s going to be a tough nut to crack this sub 20:00 but I’m determined to do it.
Quality work @alanf - that's our race so hope you had a good day!
I was taking pics on the finish line and was struck by how many top finishers were in magic shoes. I was discussing with my clubmates if we should adjust the results algorithm to add 4% for Nike wearers. I think winner Moh was in Reeboks so it's quite possible you were 2nd in the New Results 🙂
@stever - great day thanks. The organisation and running of the race was spot on. The only thing that might have been detrimental was the fog and ice but out on the course it wasn't a problem at all. I was number 132 if you've got any pics of me finishing? Think I came in 26th. I was in the middle of a see of pink shoes with a smattering of green ones. I did pass someone towards the end wearing Brooks, which seemed like a novelty. A great event though - thanks to all the people/volunteers who made it a great race and a great day
Magic thanks - yes, 26th in a pretty sharp field! Think I missed you changing memory cards, doh, but Mick Hall has a couple if you plug your number in. https://mickhall.zenfolio.com/f27032652
