It's getting so a person can't afford a pet dog.
Costs of foods are rising, grooming is astronomical, and don't get me started on vet bills! 🙁

I've got an 8 year old lab and I won't have spent a fraction of that! Was the research done by an insurance company scaremongering you into buying their product??
does that include the cost of insurance premiums!
tbh I would say a typical spaniel excluding any serious problems about £8/10k including food, insurance etc
Shit. My Spaniels 5 years old too, he's cost me about £5k so far and he's had more operations and has more metal in him than your average Red Bull Rampage competitor!
Foods about a tenner a month (working dog mix) supplemented with raw bones from my mobile shop.
I Shave the dogs hair off with the horse clippers 🙂 Saves a fortune!
I haggle with the vets every time I go my dogs uninsurable, tell them you're not insured and get the costs down!
Mind they do cost a fortune when you start adding it up but a Spaniel at £26k as the cheapest option is ridiculous!
I reckon on about £10k over my his lifetime will be about right, and that includes the cost of travel on his passport once a year!

That story dates from 12 May 2008 :
They claim that a Doberman would cost £49,304 over its lifetime.
Over two years later on 9 July 2010 the Daily Mail ran the same story :

Only this time the cost of Doberman over its lifetime was put at £22,009.62. That's less than half what it was two years previously.
So not so much the "rising cost" of barking, more a case of "you must be barking mad to believe the bollox the Daily Mail churns out".
That's just poppycock.
We have a greyhound and given that she gets through 1 large bag of dry dog food @ £24 and 6 small cans of wet food £12 p/m a month and insurance is another £16 p/m she will cost us somewhere just under £9k assuming she lives to 14 in food and insurance.
Add £200 every couple of years for her teeth to be cleaned and £120 p/y in flea and worming treatments = £3k soo under £13k in her lifetime.

I hope my brother and sis-in-law don't see that! Once they start adding up the overall costs of owning a Labrador, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, four cats and two ferrets, they'll probably have to sell the house...
It's a wonder they can afford to run two cars and two motorbikes as well.
That's 3-4 decent bikes over the same period Danny. No shit. Literally.
Our border collie per week, costs about twice as much as that shiterag of a 'newspaper' and deffo produces less crap on a daily basis.

monthly
insurance = £30
Food = £40
Yearly
worms = £20
flea = £30
Random vet bill = £120 (avg over life)
x all by an avg of 12 years = £12K ish
though my dog died when she was about 8 dye to chrones and the insurance coughed up about £12K in 1 year alone.
@Kryton57 - She keeps Mrs Danny happy / quiet though and you cannot put a price on that - even in bikes!!

Yes if you saw the cost of delivering medical care to people Vet bills would seem very reasonable.
If you have a problem try insurance, mostly things cost what they do - equipment, drugs, staff, training. Or you could do what people do with LBS order online and watch a you tube on how to fix stuff.
A local lady has a 7yr old westie. Errr Same age as ours but hers acted twice its age. She could no longer get insurance due to the number of claims. Insurers live premiums but hate paying out so massively ramp up cover premiums or refuse anyone eho clains...

Her monthly premuims ramped up along with her excess spent on every claim.
Better off doing the kind thing IMO as charities/specialist refuges didnt want it either

If you have to have a pedigree fully check out the breeder and the parents. If everyone did this then the unscrupulous ones would be out of business and there would be a lot less dogs with problems which cause problems and pain which result in huge bills and sometimes euthanasia.
Keep on top of the routine maintenance (worming, flea treatment, injection etc)
Choose the right food and feed it the correct amount
Train it and exercise it physically and mentally
Don't let it play with/eat stuff it shouldn't. eg STICKS!
All will help keep down bills and you should be doing them anyway as most are not really 'optional'.
Finally if you have doubts you could afford a bill for something serious then insure it.
Well in the end thats what it costs, should the vets work for a loss? I know it sounds harsh but it's not a charity. The charity ones are exceptionally busy and there is not that much choice over what gets done.
Yup pet insurance well worth getting.
