'I'm not racist but...'

Well actually you are.

Heard it twice from them in the last week.

Friend becomes acquaintance.

Does definitely depend what comes next, there's loads of stuff someone could be assuming would be taken as racist but clearly isnt.

1st time, 'you have to be careful here in summer it's like Saudi Arabia with so many Arabs' - this was as a family walked past, wife wearing a headscarf, kids all cheerful and that.

2nd time, 'be careful, the dark guys will have your wallet when you're on the trams' - thing is I have quite a tan now, if I catch myself stealing my own wallet I'll be quite cross. Or maybe I will automatically find myself stealing from some pale Swiss bloke.

I think 'racism' is a subject around which there is still so much ignorance it is hard to believe. For example it is pretty well understood that legislation is only a small part of the answer to this ans so must be taken as a starting point. But sadly how many people don't even realise how badly they abuse even the most basic legal requirements - even enlightened folks who never say "I'm not a racist but . . ."

Don't you need to be just a little bit racist yourself to be aware of racism?

I'm not racist but you have to be careful about the stuck up posh white pricks in West Oxfordshire... one of them, in particular, has got a bit of power and's now acting like he flipping owns the place.

How does that work then?

Everybody's racist to some degree. True fact.

Not actually true.

Everybody is prejudiced against others to some degree, now that is undoubtedly true.

Erm, and that's a problem how, exactly? Are Black people not allowed to be concerned about immigration from Eastern Yerp?

Well you know! They come over here, take out jobs, take our prejudices, take our bigotry.

Maybe he was just trying to assimilate.

I agree, if that degree is in the range of "very racist" to "not racist at all"

Actually, when they said it I thought, 'typical Swiss-German', so now I'm a racist. Maybe it's because I'm Irish. I'm confused.

Recently it seems to me that 'Casual' racism seems to be more an more common. It seems that the majority of people object to racism on an overt / institutional level, yet turn a blind eye to using certain words in a closed group of friends. I have observed this with quite a few social groups.

I think racism should be renamed anticulturalism.

I have no problem with decent people of any background, I have a problem with negative cultures that clash with mine.

Skin colour has nothing to do with it as far as im concerned.
