I want the kings gig. You get £100 million from the state. You get countless wealth from stolen assets that are now some how his personally. No inheritance tax and in return he wants us to think he is a good egg and voluntarily paid £13m in tax. Sign me up.

I have no idea why they cost £2m a week. It stuck me as absurd 3 years ago when it was merely £1m a week. So much for sliming down

I have no idea why they cost £2m a week.

Partly because they employ 563 people, at a cost of £33.7 million.

So over half a million a week.

How can they possibly need 563 people on the taxpayers payroll to look after 1 family?  We should only be on the hook for the staff related to their role as monarch not the ditches and servants. I get they need a pr team, a pa they could share given they aren’t exactly busy and a couple of people to help book trips. So what do the other 550 do

Stonehenge draws 1.4 million visitors annually and it's builders have been replaced by the Beakers, Celts, Saxons and the Normans in the intervening period. We can probably evict the Saxe-Coburgs and people will come and see what's here.

And Stonehenge is rubbish

Aye, just a pile of rubble now...should have been kept as a house instead of allowing it to fall into rack and ruin! 😉

so nothing that is part of their role as monarch beyond the pr department. If they want helpers the pay for them themselves. If they want someone to look after the pictures then pay for them or put them in the British museum collection.

Cool, consign royalty to history and it’ll be a double win. Or just continue doffing your cap and tugging your forelocks to your betters.  Blind obsequiousness to the concept of a monarchy in this day and age is quite pathetic , imho

You're going to shit yourself when you hear about religion.

because other countries do it is not a reason we should.

I'm saving this for later, and I'm going to wheel it out next time this forum discusses anything like "The UK should adopt PR"

@Tom - That tourism line doesn't bear scrutiny.

France is the world's most popular tourist destination with 2.5 times the number of visitors that we get. And everyone knows what the French did to their royals. Could be the way out of the UK's current economic malaise....

Of the top five tourist attractions, only one - Windsor Great Park is 'Royal' the others are all museums and art galleries. The problem is that like France, it's overwhelmingly concentrated in the capital.

Official tourist numbers on France are misleading because whilst it's true France has the most tourist arrivals many don't stay, moving on to Italy, Spain... . The rest of the country gets more overnights than Paris as people might arrive in Paris but then move on to other dstinations within France. Paris gets six times the overnights of second placed Nice but the top 25 other city destinations total more than Paris. When you add the thousands of smaller destinations you realise that Paris isn't as dominant as it first appears. About three million foreign skiers ski in France each year, add the Summer visitors and a few small ski towns/villages get at least half as many overnights as Paris - there are 300 000 overnight beds in the Tarentaise alone, that's more than Paris, but more seasonal obviously.

Maybe, I'm firmly in the Republican camp but recognise that when my friends and aquaintances go on holiday to the UK the royal sights are well up there in their things to.

Tourism isn't the only consideration, I see the cap doffing mentality, class system and monarchy a handicap to the country as a whole. The lower classes "know their place" which limits their ambition and thus contribution to society. The upper class sit on their laurels (wealth) and put more into keeping to poor down than bringing everybody up. Look at your field, education, it perpetuates the class system to the detriment of UK PLC.

When I first read your post my brain went "you can't polish a turd" but then realised you meant "abolished".

But the royal sights are royal sites, and don't need any actual royal shites inhabiting them.

Which apparently gets 10 million visitors per year...

Imagine how many more they'd get if they had a royal family in residence.   😀
