Madrid - skint.
Istanbul - close to the Syrian war zone and itself simmering with unrest.
Tokyo - close to Fukushima and overdue for a major earthquake.

And the winner is Tokyo! A lot can, and probaly will, go wrong in eight years.

A lot can also go right in 8 years so each of those cities could have benefited from being awarded the games. Just look at the transformation of the area around the site of the London games. It was not far short of a nuclear waste land 8 years ago. Granted it wasn't off the Richter scale but it was a post industrial eye sore.

Bradwell (far closer to London than Fukushima is to Tokyo) was hit by lightning a few years back and caught fire, for some reason it never made the news (I just happened to be stood in a boatyard down the road). And geological events are notoriously easy to predict aren't they?

All the optimists went to America 250 years ago.

We're the B ship. Get used to it 🙂

Just what Japan needs to kick start it's economy and focus it's rebuilding efforts. It will give them a welcome boost over the next 8 years after the terrible events that happened.

I assume the OP was not impressed by London (Riots, shootings, bombings etc)

They should spend billions sorting that mess out and helping the people affected rather than hosting the drug fest that is the Olympics

I'm looking forward to the opening ceremony already. There were huge numbers of people who were negative about London. When it came round I thought it was an amazing success. Still 'everything as planned and working well' doesn't make news.

I was kind of hoping Istanbul would get it.

The games in London were absolutely fantastic

As per @MSP I had hoped Istanbull would get it. Tokyo will be well run but probably too expensive to visit.

The games in London were absolutely fantastic at reinforcing the idea that sport is something to be watched on television.
