Southgate is a decent manager ...
Yes, by comparison to all other previous managers except 1966, he is the next best I guess to reach the final.
@bruneep I think everyone has accepted Italy were the better team but that doesn't mean we have to like them getting away with shithousery. If England had got away with doing that and won, the whole of Scotland would be in absolute uproar over it.
Radford was a penalty taker and he still missed. Agreed Grealish and Stirling should have stepped up. Leaving it to a 19 year old regardless how good he is, is lame. Because pressure.

He was only on for few minutes ... what a gamble.
Hard luck England. Jeez, there are some sad **** in this place. FFS
fify
World Cup next ... LOL!
Argentina Vs Italy or England in the final ... LOL!
Italy were the better team everywhere but the final third. England s goal was tremendous. Italy's was almost an accident. So, to say they were the better side is true but.
So, to say they were the better side is true but.
... Italy Wins!
Fair play, the early goal messed England up more than Italy, i did think that with England's faster and fitter forwards they'd give Chiellini and Bonnuci a game, but the old heads just won that one, and they played Kane like a fiddle.
Think Southgate made a few errors, but he's got a young team and the world cup in 16 months, fix the midfield and they'll be ready for that, it's just not been right in the middle, Rice was decent, but they don't have that guy seeing a pass and making the pitch as wide or narrow as they need it.
Every tournament I have a cull of people on my Facebook friends list, based on scottish nobbers who support anyone but England every match, then practically spaff their load when england finally get beaten.
I 100% get not supporting England if you aren't English, but coming on to gloat afterwards, despite the fact your own team got knocked out weeks ago, marks you out as a bit of a tit IMO. And that's coming from a Scot..
Italy are certainly a lot easier on the eye than previous incarnations and TBF Mancini deserves a lot of credit for that. Still cynical when they need to be yes. Another ref might have sent off Jorginho tonight. Regardless, Southgate should have shifted up a gear in normal time or the first half of ET at the latest. Bringing on Rashford and Sancho knowing they’d have the weight of the nation on their shoulders with barely a kick of the ball is grossly unfair IMO.
This England side have some of the best attacking talent we’ve ever had. Southgate needs to play to their strengths and start applying pressure on decent teams. Rarely are we good enough at defending for long periods - many a tournament defeat has been the result of that.
Credit to the lads and staff for getting this far, but I think with a more positive mindset they would have picked up that trophy in normal time.
the whole of Scotland would be in absolute uproar
You gotta find something to make up for such a dismal performance in the group stages. Uproar it is.
It’s not going to do anyone any good to get hung up on the injustices. Neither Chielini nor Jorginho should have finished that game without a red card. I’m still bitter over that cheating bastard Henry - it never helps. 😂

Unfortunately, the reasons they don't want England to win is rather obvious.
There are plenty of hatred towards England and this even comes from within ...
Can't stand Maguire, but England have had a solid defence, that's why i can't understand why England sat back so much and didn't try and risk more players into counters with such a solid defence, i think the only shot on target for England was the goal, that means they went over 120 minutes without a shot on target adding injury time in!
Southgates leadership failed at the last hurdle. Not in a million years would I have put a 19 yo up to take the fifth, crucial penalty, in a major comoetition, regardless of ability.
Yeah England needed to get a second goal when they were dominant. I think despite this team being much more mentally strong than previous England teams the occasion and crowd tension etc got to them a little.
Let's spare a thought for Saka and Rashford (and probably Sterling) who will no doubt get a barrage of racist abuse now 🙁
And brutal for Sancho to not really get a chance then get sent into the firing line like that.
Can’t stand Maguire, ...
He is alright but the whole team need more determination and guts.

Saka and Sterling played well through out the tournament.
Rashford ... taking the penalty ... nahhh ...
> checks how many goals England conceded this tournament <
I’m talking about when we’re up against genuinely good opposition. We sit back, invite pressure and finally cave in.
Nahhh … diving is an art and also entertaining.
At the end of the day it is the result that counts.
Yeah ‘cos fair play & good sportsmanship have no place in sport..
🙄

True. If you can't beat them, join them. England could do with a bit more if that in their game, if they want to win. They might lose their audience, though.
England have had a solid defence, that’s why i can’t understand why England sat back so much
Yes, I think that was an error. Too hard to change gears if you have to - which they did. Plus they had so many attacking options. Italy adjusted at the half, Kane wasn't troubling them anymore. Should have had him off, given them a different look. Sitting in 5-4-1 and thinking you can kill off 45 minutes, not a good idea. Even though Italy really didn't trouble Pickford, it just took a bit of bad luck.
Well, they had 2 hours to win it, after that it’s a lottery,
Shame he didn’t bring on Rashford and Sancho earlier . I thought the Italians had Kane sussed out pretty early on.
I’m not keen on all this passing backwards malarkey either, puts me right on edge watching it waiting for the opposition to snatch the ball.
And the Italian should have been sent off for dragging Sako down like that. Takes the pi55
Yeah ‘cos fair play & good sportsmanship have no place in sport..
Nobody cares if you win.
Well in Southgate. That defeat is on you you spineless d1ck.
Calm down dear - it’s only a game!
Nobody cares if you win.
I do as do others, but you plainly lack class. Each to their own.
Seems like. Lot of people are forgetting that your first 5 pen takers Re set at the beginning. Saka must have put his hand up and it will be character building (ps does he want to pop over to the righteous side of North London?).
I’m disappointed, I’m going to drown my sorrows with another American bourbon but this team have gone further than any other in the last 40 years I’ve been following them and I’ll carry on in 2022 ecaize that’s what we do.
I do as do others, but you plainly lack class. Each to their own.
Yes, but they are still a strong football nation whether class or not. They just need the extra edge to differentiate themselves, so being good at play acting gives them the edge.
Without question the better side - but if you have to use the ‘dark arts’ to win it cheapens your achievement.

Full MemberBringing on Rashford and Sancho so late to take pens was a mistake. Ideally they could have done with a few more mins.
Southgate basically committed totally to the 120 minutes, he wanted to keep the players on for that til the death. I guess if he'd brought his subs on earlier and Italy had cut through and scored folk'd be saying the opposite "why start making subs for penalties when you never get there"
Can't really fault the choice of players for the kicks but putting Saka up last was a mistake. Maybe the right choice for right then in the shootout, but brutal 2 seconds after. You want an old hard head there.
Without question the better side – but if you have to use the ‘dark arts’ to win it cheapens your achievement.
On the contrary because they have delivered the result. The nation is in joy, yes, they might be a bit naughty but winning is better than losing.
Enough with the dark arts, the referee chose to keep the red card in his pocket, that's all.
Not sure why Saka was getting all the attention; Rashford's fannying about on the penalty spot was ridiculous.

Sent the keeper the wrong way though, just his finish let him down.

Says one hell of a lot about you as a person if you applaud cheats..

Don’t kid yourself- it was a shit penalty.
Grealish should have had a pen

NB they are not beating up Italians there but people breaking in to Wembley without tickets. Horrible behaviour anyway.
Nobody cares if you win.
I do. For most of my life England have been an embarrassment. With the reality never living up to hype. The occasional game where it all came together, but generally just disappointment. Not at the result, but the nature of the play and absence of attractive football.
This team have been different. A pleasure to watch attractive football. Italy were the better team. But I’ve enjoyed watching England play. And that’s been a welcome change.
Isn’t that vid of fans without tickets breaking into the ground?
Says one hell of a lot about you as a person if you applaud cheats..
It's football. People want result and they only remember good things about winning.
Enough with the dark arts, the referee chose to keep the red card in his pocket, that’s all.
Yes, if the referee and VAR cannot detect them then it is an art.
I do. For most of my life England have been an embarrassment.
If the ref and VAR say good. It's good.
Embarrassment? That's because you have not won. That's because there is not enough determination.
When you see it from behind the goal, Rashford's eyes and body language were still saying "right" even as he kicked it left. Basically his bluff was so good he fooled himself. But if he'd just hit it that tiny bit different it'd have been pretty much unsavable and a masterclass in fooling a keeper. Funny old game.
And remember, nobody stands up in a shootout and freestyles it, it's all coached and practiced.
England may have lost the match but some of the fans gave the Italians a beating
(NSFW)
They don't think the Asian lad is Italian, the call him a 'f---n p--i' whilst kicking & beating him on the ground
Who the hell gives the deciding penalty to a 19 year old?
thing is - if someone else had scored it, every kick after that would also have been a decider... ...so when would you have played him?
but Southgate’s conservatism let them back into it.
I love the England support - it's always the manager's fault! It can't just be they you were the second best team.
