Saka is a more assured defender than Sancho. I think Southgate was thinking that Saka does offer the threat to get behind but would be better able to stop Emerson/Insigne. If course when you see what they got away with defending him, it's not entirely a surprise that he's been a bit ineffective.

The only lesson I think England should take from that is to realise quicker when they are going to sleep and to get themselves gee'd up again quickly. Score two in normal time and you rarely lose.

Sorry but Southgate got everything wrong tonight. Saka should not have taken a penalty at all. Just hope he gets over it and becomes a better player for it.

I hope not. The eyes of the world are on 'us' opening up and letting covid rip whilst hosting events with packed stadia. Having gorged ourselves on vaccines that aren't available in many poorer parts of the world. The least we could do is be dignified in defeat. It is only a game.

Absolutely. I would gladly take a loss in a game like that over winning "the Italian Way". I wouldn't watch an England team that did that. However, a little bit less robust play, a little more grab and niggle would be acceptable. International refs are never going to wear Prem. Style football. We can beat our heads against that or concede we might have to adapt a bit
