The big problem with Detectorists and Small Creatures...

I really enjoyed Small Creatures, so I then binge-watched the entire of Detectorists, which I also really enjoyed (although I didn't like the German character in series 2).

However... I am now back on to watching Inside Number 9 and I just want nice things to happen, for it to be whimsical and sweet.

😁

If you're after more 'nice people' comedy, check out

- Leonard and Hungry Paul

- Early Doors (that's probably not aged brilliantly in places, but still good).

'Mum' also falls into the nice comedy list - and 'Ghosts'.

...and it's Small Prophets! 😜

Doh! It is, isn't it! (for some reason, I always forget the name – it just won't stick).

"Big Boys" on C4 might fit into the nice things, whimsical and sweet category.

A bit left field but Schitts Creek kind of fits the brief. Not whimsical but its all nice things and joy.

And it has the late great Catherine O'Hara plus three Levy's

I would add The Good Place and Only Murders in the Building, although OMITB should probably have quit after two seasons.

Ewww David! Schitt's Creek is a work of comic genius that as an added bonus has about half a million episodes. It also has one of the most touching love stories I've ever seen on screen between David and Patrick.

In my head so do I, first clause anyway. But every one of the above we've bailed on after a few episodes...

Anyway, the actual big problem with these shows is they're twists on Last of the Summer Wine...

(As so too is my bike riding I guess. Maybe we should try going downhill in bathtubs not bikes?)

Don't knock Last of the Summer Wine - that's my idea of a great retirement!! Bimbling around the hills, talking twaddle, having a few pints and getting up to silly stuff! 🙂

Modern Family is worth a look, its very American, but also definitely lands the right side of "nice"  There are about 200 episodes too.

I read the book, after listening to the R4 book club enthusing about it. I really didn't get it! Later, when the TV series was on, I caught a bit of it, and it seemed more entertaining than the book than the book, but it still didn't get me interested. I seem to remember feeling that I was reading about damaged people, rather than charmingly funny people, if that makes sense?

Coincidentally, I caught some of LOTSW yesterday, quite a late episode (2007?) where the cast were all looking old and tired. It was devoid of any charm or humour, but I guess that's what happens when you try to make the same jokes funny for thirty odd years. Yes, two characters skateboarded down a hill and ended up in a field and there were jokes' about Howard/Hilda and Marina. I didn't even realise that it had carried on for so long.

I think there are a lot of different writers involved... and only a few of them are good. It's really hit & miss. The later series are terrible. And the dad's character gets very wearying!
