'She’s got quite a twinkle in her eye, she’d be a lot of fun I bet.'

Yeah, but you wouldn't play Chinese ovens with her, would you?

Clearly a stunt by the magazine to get attention even if the story behind it has good intentions. The test will be who is on the cover of the next magazine and the ones after that.

Also completely hypocritical of a magazine of that sort to be pretending that they care when the past few decades have probably suggested they don't care that much and are very much part of the problem.

It is not healthy to be obese, it is not healthy to starve yourself to be naturally thin, it is not healthy to look in fairly good shape but live on a diet of crisps and sit on a sofa playing computer games all day. I don't think it is about that though is it....

With comments like these it’s not surprising that so many kids are self harming nowadays.

If you bothered to read any of the detail behind the article you would realise that it’s not about promoting obesity, but promoting body positivity.

That means that even if you are a size 24 or a size 6 and wish to do something about it, at the same time you should still love and accept yourself for who you are and not feel like you should hate your body and by extension of that yourself. You lot talk about overweight people as if they were sub human.

Not only is this point of view extremely unkind, it’s plain wrong. No one who advocates body positivity is opposed to healthy diet and exercise. The message here isn’t don’t work out and don’t be healthy. The message, as I understand it, is this: love yourself as you are, not only as you wish to be. There’s no law that says a woman — fat or skinny or somewhere in between — has to hate her body. Holliday’s presence on the cover of Cosmo is a reminder of this. And if you don’t think teenage girls are in need of such a reminder, you’re full of it.

As Mrs Slack says, who apparently in her younger years was much much larger than she is now, inside every fat person is a thin person wanting to get out... A view I cannot either confirm or deny as my genes, metabolism and attitude to exercise and diet keep me at a constant weight and bmi.

My point being, where are her knees?

The irony coming from you is pretty strong, given your history on here of constantly criticising everything you disagree with.

Awe dodums. Did I piss on your chips?

Good topic, rather expected of you considering your history on here of constantly criticising everything you disagree with.

The image promoted by various clothes, make up, perfume, film, media companies to women of all shapes and sizes is pretty messed up to be fair. It's an ideal standard that a teeny minority match, and most send years obsessing over and worrying about I know girls that are a perfect sized 10 but shamed by their naturally saggy boobs, I know black girls who have chemically straightened their hair for so long it's probably going to affect their chances of having a healthy baby, or even getting pregnant in the first place, and I know big girls who are constantly remind that that they are "unworthy", because they are fat (mostly by blokes at bars who are equally large, but that's a another debate, I guess)

So yeah, lets have more normal sized models on the covers of magazines. Although Cosmo? really? I agree with whoever on here said, let's see the cover model for next month and the month after that. I'm cheering for the woman, and the sentiment, but Cosmo can **** right off

Yeah, well it kinda gets me that as humans we still make decisions about people based on thier outward appearance.

The article (I read it) is quite well written, not one I would expect from Cosmo considering its history of promoting skinny kids looking like druggies on thier covers. But to thier credit those days seem to be over, well fingers crossed.

I still find it odd that Men’s Mags are rarely talked about on here.

Can't be arsed to read the article ..it is a womens magazine after all..my first thought upon seeing the pic though ( being brutally honest ) ..is "What the **** have they got a fat bird on the front of that magazine for ?"

Screw positivity ...It's truly unhealthy to be that overweight with all the health risks associated with it ..and shouldn't be promoted as being so..

I'm sure she is a lovely person though ..

One of the things that gladdens my heart is when I see someone overweight out running or on their bike.

It's hard to accept you need/want to change, hard to do something about, and exercising is hard as **** when you're overweight/unfit.

Good on you!

My Mrs pointed out that the issue is one of self esteem. If people feel constantly ashamed of themselves it tends to make them depressed. And if you're depressed you're not really inclined to do anything about your problems.

If you feel like you're worth something, on the other hand, then you might be.

There might be some people who use this image to justify their eating problems, but maybe not - let's face it, our current tactic of being shitty to fat people doesn't work does it?

M

My Mrs pointed out that the issue is one of self esteem. If people feel constantly ashamed of themselves it tends to make them depressed. And if you’re depressed you’re not really inclined to do anything about your problems.

Well this is part of the issue. Trouble is the ideal body shape is dictated by a few outlets in print and moving media. This has always been the case and is there for both sexes. Take a look at the male and female leads over the past 50 years. Look at how every female lead must be skinny and every male must be an althete or more so now a bodybuilder. If you are fat then you can be the funny one...

The odd thing is the media has changed. In the last decade or so it has become more acceptable to be different. I cannot say if this has helped or not. As s society in the West we seem to be over consuming and looking to justify our “growth” so we don’t have to face the reality of our lifestyle.

i do not believe that people should be fat or skinny shamed and believe that each person has a healthy weight/shape. The girl in the photo is not this and while she might be happy we should not celebrate obesity. Nor should we celebrate extreme dieting, excessive alcohol consumption etc.

Although men seem to get the blame for the pressure on women's body image, it seems to me that men are far more accepting of a wider range of body types in women than the women themselves.

I think the cruelest delusion is "fat but fit". Anyone who has put on significant weight and previously been fit knows that generally ain't so.

Its all about availability rather than just appearance... 😃

every year there is a thread on this site about people trying to lose weight or gain fitness be it for appearance, health or any other reason that an individual may have. As a group I doubt there are many people on here who have at one time not felt bad about their appearance. Knowing that you need to work to be better and that it is hard is not a bad thing. Neither is understanding that your better is not the same as someone else’s.

Can having a positive body image can be harmful if it makes the hugely obese less likely to lose a bit of weight?

Having an obese woman on their front page isn't getting more normal sized women featured in the magazine.

She's obese and is heading for type 2 . Not a good message to send out at all. Likewise the lollipop head models are not sending out a good message. It's a move by the magazine to grab sales and internet space, which it has.

Like the OP, I don’t understand why smoking too much is bad and the morally upstanding can look down their noses at it, when eating too much is just fine and dandy. I’m not disgusted or excited when looking at her, I don’t really feel the need to pass judgement - I just don’t understand.

But I do worry that the normalisation of that shape is just part of the slow slide (roll?) into obesity for the UK. It’s a major public health problem and we’re doing it wrong IMHO.

I just see a pretty, attractive woman.

They come in all shapes and sizes, you know? Just like blokes, but with the added scrutiny and judgemental crap clearly being demonstrated by a lot of people on here.

When you've finished s****ing and mocking the cosmo article, perfect though you doubtless are, maybe have a read about the amount of young girls self harming due to unrealistic body image projected onto them by a society of nasty judgemental nobheads

How many of the womens magazines have male editors? Every survey/study I've ever seen shows that in general men prefer women in the healthily curvey range. Stop blaming men for all of women's problems. They are perfectly capable of inflicting their own misery on themselves.

That's an extraordinary broad brush you're using there. The straw based paint you're using could do with having some thinners added as well.

There's so much hilarity in this article, firstly the womans attitude towards the bald bloke, then the writers attitude that seems to assume that appearances don't matter for men because women are all gold digging hoes anyway. I love humanity.

https://melmagazine.com/lets-talk-about-bald-shaming-ad0ba205f75b

Spencer Kobren, Founder of the American Hair Loss Association, gets at this in some of his discussions of baldness. He calls bald shaming the “last bastion of political incorrectness” — an area of male body-shaming for which we offer men no protection. In a video in his series “The Bald Truth,” he tells an anecdote about a woman approaching him at dinner in Los Angeles one night who compliments his hair and is surprised when he tells her that he actually paints the back of his head to hide the balding. She tells him it’s absolutely ridiculous to care so much about something so trivial. He notes the irony that the comment is coming from a 45-year-old woman who has clearly spackled so much makeup on her face that her real face is virtually undetectable.

“This is all I got,” he said, referring to his appearance.

“This is basically what I look like. I don’t wear a face full of makeup, a push-up bra, a spray-on tan, fake nails, high heels. I had a shirt on, my head was painted, and I was ready to go. This woman was basically wearing a costume to leave the house…. The fact that she would even consider trivializing what we go through when it probably takes her three hours to get out of the ****ing house in the morning is laughable to me, and I think it illustrates the insanity that is the way society views men dealing with issues with their appearance. They want every man to look like George Clooney, but if he tries to maintain his appearance, there’s something wrong with them.”

He’s obviously pissed — and he fails to realize that in spite of his looks being harder to alter, as a man, he doesn’t have to be good looking if he’s funny or, say, really rich — but that doesn’t mean his sentiment is wrong. Bald men are the butt of jokes. Being bald is bad, but not as bad as being vain about it.

So a fairly mixed bag of responses as expected, ranging from 'she disgusting' to 'this criticising should be ashamed'. I'm personally not critising her, I am however criticising the motivation of the publisher's (and yes I finally read the article). I'm firmly in this camp...

Screw positivity …It’s truly unhealthy to be that overweight with all the health risks associated with it ..and shouldn’t be promoted as being so..

I’m sure she is a lovely person though

As for..

Awe dodums. Did I piss on your chips?

Good topic, rather expected of you considering your history on here of constantly criticising everything you disagree with

I'm afraid you didn't.

Do you not see the irony of your comments though. Seriously fella, without trawling through your history there are numerous instances of you doing just that. Any driving thread, any individual who may have once read the daily mail, I can guarantee you felt the need to post on the 'pit girls should be banned' thread (I can't find it but I'd bet my house you did) with some judgemental nonsense. As I'm sure I did also.

Ultimately it's a forum, which we come on to comment about stuff. Yes I am judgemental at times, but your lack of self awareness is pretty staggering if you don't realise you are also.

Anyway, can't be assed getting into a slagging match with you about how we feel about each other as posters. My post was not meant to be mean to the girl, so apologies if it came across that way.

Or you could partly/mostly/pretty much lay the blame at the rise of the social media/facebook/instagram "perfect" selfies and promotional crap espoused by the likes of the kardishans and every single one of those ****in duck pout instagram posts all vying for likes and hugs/hearts self affirmation for narcissistic vapid morally ****ing bankrupt sell your soul for 5seconds of fame and 100,000 followers coz that's all that ****ing matters these days, who cares if every single one of your so called instagram selfies takes a ****ing small army of make up artists/stylists/photographers and 6hrs of work to create one ****ing picture to post to your followers - ****ing sheep the lot of them. Product placement sell-out whores who lie to impressionable young kids - you too can/should/will look like this first thing in the morning as long as you merely follow this routine with the "insert sponsored wonder product here", I'd dance on the ****ing burning embers of their botox/plastic surgery/fake eyelash/bleached teeth lipo suctioned bodies if i thought it would do any good.

Tessa Holliday is just fat to the point of needing clinical help and to my eyes she looks bloody awful, i imagine she's not happy being that weight as the stress it puts on her muscular skeletal frame will be immense, not to mention the health implications, whether she needs a considered medical study into her microbiome/gut bacteria that may be increasing her weight no matter how little she eats or perhaps she may just be a greedy ****ing pig who eats the wrong types of food, either way she needs help.

Can't disagree too much ( if at all ) with what you have written.

Frank ...you are assuming I could actually neck 9 pints ?

If you are talking about my limit these days it's probably half of that ..and even then I would like to think I have more control than to tackle a beer goggle monster ..

Always amazing that a magazine that abhors sexism in our chosen sport be it advertising, prodiim girls etc, is so tolerant off (or blind to) the “I’d give ‘er one, would you?” brigade on the forum.
