[#1696875]

As im off to the falklands in july ive been toying with the idea of buying either an xbox 360 or a ps3 (tax free)as a present to myself for being away for 4 months!!

what im after is something that can act as a multimedia pc really and also play a few games too if i ever feel the need!!

do any of you on here have a ps3 and use it mostly for movies and music??

if so what are your experiences with it???

i would be replacing a sony upscaling dvd player... will i notice much difference in picture quality??

cheers

steve

p.s is the xbox worth a look or not?

xbox - worth a look if you like games. PS3 good for BluRay, some games and iPlayer if you have a fast, rock solid internet connection. It'll play & upscale DVDs for you. It can also access media servers on your network and play stuff from them. It won't easily deal with out of region DVDs and will not play out of region BluRay discs. It shows photos nicely.

It won't act as a multimedia PC as it can't run word etc and unlike a PC it doesn't crash or slow down every few hours.

Hi Renton - Yes, the PS3 will play movies/music off an external hard drive via a USB connection.

PS3 totally rocks! I bought my boys one and I play it as much as possible. lol

The thing is just brilliant! Games are amazing! I'm currently hooked to Burnout Paradise, COD, Batman, MotoGP and many more lol

I thought it would, but plugging a FAT32 formatted mp4-filled LaCie 120GB rugged drive had it saying there were no movies on it. I moved some .avi files, mp3s and JPEGs onto the LaCie and it said there were no movies, music or images on it. Not sure if the PS3 needs them organized in a special way though.

it will appear that it doesnt show the movies, music etc. In the bottom right of the screen click other information and select show all (if trying to read off a harddrive, usb stick etc.....)

Why would anyone want to run Word on an HTPC??

Ps3 is fat32 . The one with a 4 gig limit. It wont see ntfs drives or usb sticks. bit of a pain for downloading high def stuff.

Seems just like finners says. The PS3 looks for specific folders 'music', 'movies', 'photos' and if it doesn't find them you have to tell it to 'show all' in the options. It then lists all the things of the type you're after. It happily played mp4 files and an avi (probably DivX). It also played some mp3s.

Spongebob - I don't know what an HTPC is but getting a multimedia PC I'd expect to be able to run some productivity software on it some time. Not something you can readily do on today's games consoles. renton asked

.
The PS3 can't act like a multimedia PC when it comes to productivity stuff. In contrast I seem to remember the Atari 2600 even had a programming utility on a cartridge at some point.

grim168 - good point, FAT32 can't handle an individual file >4GB in size.
This is a file size restriction, not a drive size restriction.

PS3 is the dogs nuts and you can run a external drive for music, movies and photos . Just format in FAT32 Then add individual folders for "music", "movies" and "photos" then drag and drop the required folders into them . Then plug it in and it should show up . Also make sure and buy a usb keyboard for internet browsing and mouse.

shit thing with xbox is, you can plug your fat32 hdd into it and watch but you cant copy anything to the hdd on your box!

ps3 you can, like pics and music.

xbox you can only view! which is shitty with a huge hdd i got with my box and i cant put nothing onto it
