Idle musings for a Friday afternoon..
After riding at Comrie Croft for SSUK I fancy trying a few other places in Scotland.
What is Kirroughtree like? Is the black actually harder than the red or is just rated black due to length?
What is like compared to say, Dalby, Kielder or Comrie?
Black is techier and longer, not as techy as Comrie, never rode kielder or dalby.
Red before lunch, lunch, then black in the afternoon is a good day. If you have time and it's a nice day, a pedal and push up cairnsmore of fleet is cracking, good descent, awesome views, and only a couple of hours all in.
@nobeer - Thanks for that and for the tip on Cairnsmore - will look into that as well as my next question was going to enquire on other riding in the area
The black is basically an extension of the red, adding a fair bit of additional distance (about double?). Techier than the red, as NBF said. Most of the features are of the rocky chute variety, with these getting a bit tougher on the black as compared to the red. Nothing bonkers though, and I'd agree that Comrie is generally more technical.
My last ride there (on a fairly burly, modern-geo full-suss) made me think that it's best suited to being ridden on something a bit more spritely. It's very undulating; not the worst distination for a bit of singlespeeding, I'd imagine. Short-travel full-suss or hardtail FTW (certainly on the waymarked trails).
It's arguably lost a bit of charm following the felling that's taken place over the last few years
Think I did Kirroutree a couple of years ago (trail centres all meld into on in my memory over time). If my memory serves me right it was pretty epic as far as trail centres go with some of the best downhill runs i’ve ever done. But seem to remember the last few miles or so we’re a real drag with lots of grunting and steep climbs with very little reward. But on balance excellent.
Did all the blacks which are all rideable and used my Rocket Max which I thought was a reasonably well suited bike for it. You certainly wouldn’t want or need or benefit from anything bigger, especially on the climbs. Something a bit smaller would probably be the sweet spot though.
This is caveats that my memory is correct though!
Aye, last time I went I felt like it had lost a lot of what it once was, the initial climbs being open are pretty grim now.
Agree re a spritely bike, always felt like decent fitness is a bonus at kirro, as it's at its best if you can attack all the wee ups and carry speed into the downs.
Its a long way away. 🙂 however if you loved comrie, you will love laggan. It too is a long way away though (and from me living in Stirling...)
Ktree is more a trad trail centre as opposed to comrie tech, but mcmoab is a proper feat to master.
