It's got a monsrerous yet lovely concrete council office that somewhat dominates the town centre.

It's just down the road from Dunstable and Leighton buzzard two places I wouldn't bother going to.

It's got a grim looking nick and a nice new theatre.

But otherwise it's in the chilterns which is fairly nice.

Aylesbury...There's is literally nothing to say about it, it's every large town you've ever seen, you know already what shops, what the pubs and restaurants are like.

I live there; it's convenient for schools and shops, Milton Keynes is 30 mins away for the shops Aylesbury doesn't have. As said some decent enough riding (for the South) not far away.

If you do end up moving down look carefully at where you want to live. Personally, I wished we'd looked at Wendover and Buckingham a bit harder, whilst the school is good we do regret moving onto a new build estate - the house is lovely, but the garden is small and some of the neighbours are, well, the less said the better! There are some lovely villages in the surrounding area, but with high prices on decent size properties we won't be moving to any of them...

This is easy:

Aylesbury has absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever.  Moving away is easily the best decision I've made in my life. The traffic is awful; the drivers treat you like dirt when you're on a bike; the council only exists to feather its own nest; the centre is a dump; there's barely one good pub and the amount of half decent stuff on at the theatre has plummeted.

Wendover or Princes Risborough, or Whitchurch and Waddesdon to the north, are far better. But then so is syphilis in comparison.

We lived in Stone - a village a couple of miles out. Aylesbury was a nice market town until the planners discovered concrete in the 60s 😉 The new pool (not sure what it's like now) was good for the kids and er, no that's it.

Chilterns good for riding, loads of lovely singletrack. When it's muddy tho, it's like a full on flanders experience. As said Risborough and Wendover nice villages.

We moved out when plans to build 9000 (I think) houses between us and the town on the ColdHarbour development. Not sure they got build but we much prefer living here (Herefordshire). And we get to say 'Yeah Hereford is a dump but we used to live near aylesbury' 😉

Spent 2 weeks sharing a room with my mate in the premier Inn once... (Training course) wasn't a whole lot to keep us busy... Not planning any return trips

The finest men in Britain are produced in its grammar school and rugby club.  Otherwise a shithole.

well that helps me... was thinking of movin there from MK. Quite a bit cheaper,
Bein a delivery driver I get to see a lot of places, but not much of the cheapest areas
The villages though, nice cotswold architecture, old houses etc, very nice, for a while
Probably very desirable/expensive

Always been a hole as long as I've known it(30 years) brother lives just outside in Haddenham and that is as close as they or anyone sensible wants to be.

Literally no redeeming features at all.

I was going to say that the only thing I remember about it was the roundabout. Then I remembered that was High Wycombe. So, I got nothing.

As a local I can say it is bearable with everything you would expect in a big town (there are some nice bits tucked away in the centre).  But there are better places to live near it such as Wendover, Tring, Princes Risporough Halton and many other sweet villages. I'm fortunate to live near Aston Hill and Wendover Woods which has tons of great riding so I would recommend living near or within the Chilterns. Education is great, transport is great thought there is quite a bit of traffic. That's about it.

Lol. I was just about to post something moderately nice then remembered that was High Wycombe too.

Drove past it loads and can't remember a single thing about it.

Some nice surrounding countryside and villages. Not sure I'd want to live there though.

Thanks guys. Bearing in mind i’m 52, mrs_d is a bit younger, we have no kids and we currently live about 5 miles north of Bradford, about 5 miles from Leeds Bradford airport.

We both drive so living outside the town centre wouldn’t be a problem. Probably a good idea tbh.

Traffic can’t be anywhere near as bad as the A65 into Leeds, or the M62 between Leeds & Manchester, can it?

Toilet of the Chilterns. Went back for a walk down memory lane recently and it’s even odder than when I was a kid - grew up there. All the villages surrounding it are great but the town itself, whilst having some independents and local breweries, is full of old skanky townies looking for a scrap; exactly how it always was. House prices are high. Riding is great, loads on the Ridgeway, wendover/Aston, The Downs and Woburn all in easy reach.

My advice would be to look towards Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes or Oxford and avoid Aylesbury altogether.

Don't underestimate the traffic in Aylesbury - most of the time it barely copes but if anything goes wrong with a major route the whole place can jam up for miles around as there are few alternative routes. This will get worse with the rampant development that's going on (housing estates, HS2, industry but no extra roads). There are plenty of nice places to live outside Aylesbury but as you go towards the Chilterns where the good riding is you can end up paying full SE house prices plus a premium (see e.g. Tring, Wendover, Princes Risborough) as you're well into the London commuting area, whereas Aylesbury itself is relatively cheap but for a reason.

@johndrummer

You'll be able to make up your own mind, especially since you'll have time to decide. If you don't need the schools and large/expensive family home, I say have a good look around the surrounding areas.

Overall, living in Aylesbury doesn't seem that bad to me. It's definately not what I'd consider posh - there are plenty of 'insert derogitory term for lower-than-working-class' people who bring, erm, character (summer nights being favorite times for drunken arguments where I am) but in that sense it doesn't seem any different that many other towns in the South. I've speant time in Slough, Swindon, Maidenhead, Uxbridge etc. All have equally bad bits. Bucks county council are definately one of the worst for road maintenance though. Buying a road bike with 33c tyres was a good investment!

As for all this talk about traffic - I rarely see anything I'd consider terrible, but I leave at 0630 for my commute and am back home by 1715. Before I moved to Aylesbury I'd mostly lived in the Hillingdon & Ealing boroughs of West London where cycling was nearly always the smartest way to commute - due to the number of choke points for commuter traffic.
