[Closed] Tannoy Revolution speaker advice

I have a set of ten year old but much loved Tannoy Revolution floorstanders which went pop on one side a couple of weeks ago. Now when I try to use them one of the speakers sounds distorted and soon starts to smell of burning electrical gubbins. Obviously I've blown something (wasn't playing them that loud) but is it likely to be an internal circuit or the speaker cone itself (the cones in question protude very slightly more than they used to).
I've been quoted £200 for a complete cone replacement which I think makes it uneconomical but I am prepared to have a go myself at the repair if anyone can point me in the direction of some online advice (I don't suppose I can break them more).
Many thanks if you can help.

DOES SOUND LIKE YOU'VE BLOWN A DRIVER AND YOU AIN'T GETTING ONE FROM ANYONE ELSE.

damn CL

You can look at the crossover if you want to try getting into the speaker but I don't see the point.

Thought they might be a lost cause. Do either of you know how this might have happened as I didn't really abuse them and I'd like to avoid doing it to the next set.
They survived ten years and 6 house moves, all scratched up but sounded lovely, is it wrong to get a bit weepy over losing hi-fi equipment?

Sounds like it might just be a capacitor on the crossover that has blown.

Test the drive units by pushing them in as close to centre as you can carefully with no power on. If they scrape or feel notch then the voice coils are probably toast. Don't try this with the tweeters.

Could be fixable if you know what to do.

If your anywhere near Leicester I'd happily have a look for you.

Edit. Have you checked the amp? If the cones are pushed out slightly it could by a fried output that is giving them a DC signal. Check with a pair of speakers you don't care about.

That sounds very much like a voice-coil gone. Try gently pushing the cone in and out with your fingers; it should feel very smooth and silent, if one's gone, it'll feel gritty, and you'll hear it resonating, making a scratching noise through the cone.
Means a new driver, cause is usually an overdriven amp, the sound distorting, and clipping, which causes the speaker to heat up, and the voice-coil melting and collapsing.
It might be just age, really difficult to say, TBH. It shouldn't be too difficult to replace a driver; just undo the screws, gently pull it free from the cabinet, then pull the two wires from the crossover free from the contacts, they may be soldered, but are often push-on connectors, then reverse the process with the new driver. It's not a fiddly job, everything is big and easy to handle.
Might be worth looking for a damaged pair on fleabay, and taking them apart for spares, could be cheaper than sourcing a new factory driver.
Don't give up on them yet, a similar pair of floorstanders will probably cost double the price of a new driver, so I'd be prepared to try to save them. Bloody good speakers, Tannoys, I used to sell them, along with Castle, B&W, KEF, and they were very popular.
[edit] Eeeek! I've just had a shufti at the current Revolution floorstanders, and they start at £599!

Going up to £999 for the SE model:

Yours have got to be worth spending £200 on!

Update - just went on Gumtree and found a perfect set of the same Revolutions for £90 being sold by a bloke 10 miles up the road. They're now in the back of my car, very happy.
