Yeah, you get the feeling they've likely got a target month now for a launch and summer shakedown sail...

would love to know the budget on this in the end, it must be huge.  2023 really seems to be the year that things turned around and they can see the end now.  Still loving it

I think the thing that first attracted me to watch tally ho was that it was just one bloke taking on a huge task. He's now got staff and he just films, edits, talks to suppliers and sponsors and orders stuff. But I'm committed to see it out now.
I recently watched a couple of early episodes, amazing that he took that on with the expectation he'd need to work to pay for it.
I guess if we want to watch it, there's a compromise

there was certainly more  "charm" in the early episodes with a volunteer staff but once one or two professionals came on board it would be inevitable that the whole team would end up being on the payroll.

I tried watching a few of the first 'capstan' videos and found them very slow - dull, even.

I watched the one above the other night, and I think it's in the same mould (pun?). Half an hour just to see somebody looking for a casting flask, then boshing one together out of some cheap pine. There are a few interesting minutes in it, but (IMHO) they seem to be drawing everything out to the max to capitalise on the Tally Ho! factor.

YMMV, etc.

Leo’s high quality output makes a difficult benchmark for comparison, certainly!!

I know what you mean, and agree that some of the peripheral videos are not cinematic masterpieces. I think it's unfair to suggest "drawing everything out to the max to capitalise on the Tally Ho! factor". It looks to me more like they want to document what they are doing on video as these traditional crafts are dying out. It's just that Leo is good at doing that in an engaging and entertaining way, and the other folks aren't so much. Which is fine, they arent videographers!

the casting one ^ will be more interesting when they are pouring hot metal. I think they come across as  overly verbose due to a lack of scripting, which is understandable, and rushed editing. (it's also unfortunate that both the pattern maker and foundryman both have quite monotone and expressionless voices)

I think Leo was fully planning to pay for it all, when it was a renovation. I’m sure he’d have built something, but not the boat he has now.

When it became clear it was a full rebuild (compared to talk of saving the centreline & half the planks for example) & that the YouTube support was going to be significant, things moved on.

I have no issues with this, and happily pay for every video he puts up. He’s earned every penny Tally Ho will be worth, employed good people, supported local craftsmen& businesses, and published *hours* or entertainment along the way.

The cherry cabinetry is really superb, that was a good choice of timber. And looks like they've sourced some nicely figured stuff for the drinks cabinet, which helps set off the stained glass panel.

Surely there's some planning for a launch date soon. That's inside getting buttoned up and functioning. Next few weeks they're surely heading to hull painting and rigging in depth...

Part of me wonders if they might do a quiet launch and then a proper festival /sail...

"Hi, my name's Leo and I am captain of the Tally Ho..." Is going to be uttered shortly...

But well all be bereft when we don't have it to watch anymore! I've enjoyed this as much as anything I've ever watched

This. Pretty much every moment committed to film (including the Duchess of Desire skits) have been committed and on point. I've been given an insight into a lot of skills I'll never need but also an approach to work which is eminently practical, and been hugely entertained at the same time. Hats off to Leo and the whole crew. I like how he's able to access the specialist skills and people needed, from project management to high level rigging, and take us with him. Shout out to the drone operators too. What a time to be alive.

In amongst all the chaos of the world these videos are super relaxing and inspiring.   I love that they aren't in a rush and can take time just to show how the winches work or to explain that they put an air gap behind the heat shield on the fire just to be sure.   It's going to be sad when it ends really 🙁

There are photos on the Facebook group ' friends of Sampson boat co' of the boat in the water.  Apparently without sails so probably just a brief splash to assess waterline/ballast and leaks etc.

(Actually it looked like they've been deleted presumably as they are 'spoilers' to the next video)

Already dipped in the sea. No advance notice and no live feed as he/they feared the public would decend in their droves and they don't have the capacity for that.

she's an interesting design for a pilot cutter, quite a narrow beam for her length.

interesting design for a pilot cutter,

I don’t think she was ever a Pilot cutter, she was built as a ‘relaxed cruising yacht and deep sea fishing vessel’

she was never used as a pilot cutter but it's a pilot cutter based design   ..... with a transom stern so she has a long lwl  with a comparatively short overall length, she's probably about  1 meter narrower at the beam than a typical cutter with the same lwl.

I used to sail on a ketch cutter. I think that was about 38', with another 6 or 7 on the bowsprit. Older than Tally Ho.

The mizzen had been removed to fit a self steer wind vane. Whats more it had a yard for downwind sailing.

In fact it looked kind of piraty, especially with the rope steps on the shrouds.

A good vid popped up on the feed the other week. Really quite engrossing.
