We as a family spend a lot of time in the sea surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling etc. We probably get in once per week all year around. We would like a camera to capture our adventures. We are not going diving but surfing is going to subject it some pretty tough conditions. Don't need 8k or anything but do want decent quality stills and nice quality HD video. Should we buy second hand and do we need a separate waterproof case.

I know nowt about gopros but do watch a lot of surfing on youtube. Lots of them use the floaty for their cameras - makes it float and easy to see if it gets dropped ๐Ÿ™‚

I bought a second-hand GoPro Hero 9 earlier this year just before a holiday involving lots of snorkelling and jumping off boats. It's been great - really fun to use and the kids love it. No additional housing required - all works great.

I don't use it much, so if you're anywhere near Twickenham you can borrow if for a couple of weeks and see how you get on!

Have a hero 7 myself and that doesn't need a waterproof casing, don't know about earlier versions though. Goes up to 4k (lower if you want) and was 1 of the first with decent stabilisation
