I have a hankering for a device to play the odd quick fix computer game.

I have zero interest in splurging on anything current, I have zero interest in getting slapped down by 12 yearolds.

I just want to put the odd game of gran tourismo or equivalent on the TV. I would also not mind access to such classics as Goldeneye and Zelda.

Second hand is very fine but I really can't be hooped with Xboxes etc and the ring of death.

What should I get N64 and shite racing (except mario carts obviously). Some sort of old playstation? Alternatively what can I play on my laptop emulators etc.

I am prepared to pay up to £50 for this pleasure. If that's not obtainable there is a stick in the garden and some vibrant imagination I'll use instead.

Go to CEX, buy an xbox 360 and a ton of old games cheaply. Forza will will take care of the driving, Fable or Skyrim the "Zelda" type games and any of the Call of Duty for the "shooting folks in the face" games.

Any Xboxes or Playstations susceptible to any rings of death are likely long dead by now.

You should be able to net a decent 360 or PS3 for, well, not much more than that budget.

Try some emulators on your laptop and see how they run. Might need some tweaking but PS2 and N64 will probably work if it's reasonably modern.

PCSX2 for PlayStation, not sure what the best option is for N64.

Speaking as someone who plays the same sort of games as you want to OP, I'd give this a +1. XBbox 360 250GB Slim is the way to go for the most reliable and best specced version and the 360 is absolutely rammed with quality Japanese shoot 'em up exclusives (on that generation of consoles) plus there's a beta release of Goldeneye on 360 that's basically complete but was never released for reasons-

Failing that, if you can be arsed, a cheap-ish used pc with a GT 1030 will emulate everything from the 80s up to simple Wii (Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is playable), PS3 (Raiden IV) and XB360 (all the Cave shoot 'em ups run). I've got an i3-6100 with a GT 1030 set up for just such a thing, it mostly gets used for Dreamcast and arcade games (Marvel vs Capcom, Street Fighter Alpha, that sort of thing) but it's comfy running XB360 shoot 'em ups.

PM me if you want OP, I could nerd on about this stuff for weeks 🤣

The super-potato laptop (10 year old Dell with a 1.65GHz AMD E-450, 4GB of RAM and a knackered battery) I'm posting this guff on'll run emulators for arcade games (Sega Rally, Daytona USA), PS1 and some Dreamcast.

I've got a PS3 and 360 for just that.

Both work fine offline still.

Call of Duty is unplayable online due to aimbots and similar cheating. But the missions etc still work, and when it cost £1 for the game you can just play though them and chuck them back in the charity shops.

PlayStation 1 and OG Gran Turismo plus Final Fantasy VII is really all anyone would ever need. It's the gaming equivalent of riding the Peak District on a fully rigid bike with 580mm flat bars and thumb shifters.

Anyway, I have that and an XBox Series X for when I fancy some up to date stuff.

I bagged an old Sony PS2 a few years ago for £20.

Bought it just to play:

Which is so much fun it’s silly

Later expanded the collection to the original ‘Worms’ (best for two player) and also Ridge Racer R4.

May be time to add a fourth. Maybe Lemmings?

So I have kindly been offered a 360 in exchange for a donation to centre point.

Forza is very much on the cards... Hacking for Goldeneye I also see in my future!

P7eaven, worms is a phenomenal game as is lemmings come to that... Hmmm maybe I should have got a spectrum or something.

Skate 3 on the 360 is still a go-to for me. Perfect 'play for ten minutes' kinda game (though often as not it turns into hours as I try to nail that perfect grind).

Might have to get it all set up this weekend.

I think out of all the consoles I've ever had (more of a PC gamer), the 360 was my favourite.

Spent hours on Forza creating all sorts of mad track cars to punt around race tracks. It's also where I discovered the first Mass Effect game and it was amazing!

Plus you can't go wrong with Halo etc 🙂 I also enjoyed the Gears of War series too.

Damn! does anyone want to swap a 360 for a PS3? hehe.

Trawl ebay for a gamecube bundled up with mariokart double dash.

I've been rather impressed by the switch, but, you know, that's current and over your budget, so I didn't mention that.

We have a raspberry pi, which runs a bunch of emulators and can run up to PS1 games fine. Mostly enjoy playing NES, SNES, Master System and Megadrive games.

ROMs are plentiful and easy to download.

Forza Motorsport 3 & 4 are still my go-tos for crashing expensive cars 🤣 and Daytona USA for a quick arcade blast, obvs. I'm not that fussed on FPS but there are some belting shmups on it-

A lot of them are Japanese console only but some of them are region-free and still available to buy through XBLA.

One of the original PS3's is the way to go, the ones with backwards compatibility with PS1 and 2 discs. Perfect for GT and GTA classics Vice City + San Andreas, COD, etc. I also have a couple of PS2 Megadrive collections that have all the games you'll want from the MD.

From memory it was only the very early PS3's that were backwards compatible before they simplified the design and lost the feature?

Correct, the old george foreman models.

If buying PS2 games then SSX Tricky and Gran Tourismo 4 have to be on the list.

Cheapest PS2 comp PS3 models on CEX are £135... yikes.

Oh man, I loved SSX Tricky. We used to joke that the commentator was Will Smith.
