I have a few things that need doing and have convinced myself that i need a dremel, or a similar item that is cheaper.

There is quite a choice of these, has anyone had any good/bad experiences with them? What recommendations can you give me.

Thanks

I inherited a Draper one when my Mum’s hubby died.. works, does the job, can’t knock it.

If i was buying one, I’d go to Lidl and grab one of theirs for £20.

Obviously this isn’t the proper Stw answer so, I think you’ll find an actual Dremel for around £100 which will be 5x better.

That lidl one looks great, hadn't thought of them. Don't think I'll be able to get to lidl any time soon. Hopefully they will have some left later in the week.

Just in case i don't manage to get one, any other suggestions?

I had a cheap Woolworths branded one for ages. Worked fine. Recently bought a proper Dremel, but a cordless. It is better than the cheap one but not massively. Being cordless is very useful, though. They are sometimes on special on Amazon. I'd happily buy another but if budget is an issue I wouldn't be too worried getting back cheaper one.

Ebay £20-£30 ones with a flex shaft for me, first one I bought 10 years ago is still working (albeit with a slightly broken chuck lock as I dropped it), 2nd one at work is still going after a couple of years.

They are really handy, only general advice would be the thin cutting discs exploded easily, the metal brush wheels can disintegrate and fire bristles everywhere (wear some PPE)

I'd say splash the cash on an actual dremel.

Atleast i would if i wasn't once again replacing the speed controller on mine. (Known issue)

Genuine ones have good spares back up but if your not useing it every day I’d probably just get a cheap one.

One thing I do like is the genuine dremel click fix cutting discs. But should be able to fit them onto most other tools

I think my question was perfect timing.

Thankyou DezB for the heads up. Had to get milk earlier so went to lidl and bought one 🙂

If i use it a lot, i will look at the dremels, but i think this one will do just fine. Comes in its own carry case too!

For future reference, it’s sometimes worth checking out the likes of B&Q, they occasionally have special offers on Dremels, I picked one up for around 40% off a while back. I’d been using a Draper one that my step-dad had bought and never used, then it went wrong and there was no backup for it because it was too old. Fixed it in the end, there’s a sort of wax joint between the motor and chuck which had broken, I fixed it with an industrial hot-glue gun I ‘aquired’, but I thought it was time I got the real thing, just in case, and the B&Q offer came up at the right time.

The lidl dremel copy is really rather decent, I've been using mine for the past couple of years without any issues

A cordless dremel would be a handy thing but I'd struggle to justify one. I inherited my corded dremel and glad I own it but it's one of those tools that is hard to imagine what else you could use when you need it but in truth sits on the shelf for 48 weeks a year. Those Lidl ones look good for the cash.

There was a Dremel PSA IRO 50% off on here a few months back so I picked up a 4000 I think.  Still in its box.  I tell myself I’ve been doing a lot of DIY jobs that don’t call for a Dremel, one of which is decking out the craft room from scratch.  When that’s done SM jnr and I will be messing with a lot of stuff that WILL require a Dremel.  Or so I tell myself.

From what I’ve heard the units are generally decent but a lot of the bits are hit and miss (OEM and 3rd party).
