Fire fox 5 DEFRA multi fuel stove ( sorry no linky )

I need to replace a old gas fire and have considered the above item.

My Mate can fit it but I just wondered if anyone has any advice about the advantages of buying coal / logs over the saving on the gas bill ?

Also, are they a lot hotter than a Basic Gas fire ? unfortunatley ive not got a big budget so need to spend wisely.
