Well, the announcement finally came today after weeks of speculation. Our IT dept is being dumped and sucked up by the yanks. 20odd redundancies by early next year.
Then, me and 4 others get called into a seperate meeting.. our jobs are safe! The 4 others all work across the corridor, so I'm left in an office with about 20 people who are all going. Don't I feel like a scab.
Should I abandon them and move across the corridor?!

My experience of Yanks and others is that when the chips are down they look after Uncle Sam - Get out! Get the fire brigade out! And stay out!
Frankly I wouldn't trust them to look after YOUR job.
look on the bright side, i work for Corus and every week thier cutting jobs 766 at my plant just this month !!!!
That's exactly what they are doing tankslapper... at least I get longer than the others to find something else.

I'd sit tight - Dont ship out of the office, the others will see that as a slur against them, I guess you know the other 4 (that are being kept on) less well than those you share the room currently, you got to build bridges with them too though. Avoid negative conversations with anyone, make a back up plan - Update your CV ready and keep ears to the ground for other jobs just in case things get worse over the coming months. Thanks haddock - it is a dilemma - especially as I was talking to my manager about moving offices before this happened anyway. I actually know the 3 others who are safe better than anyone in this office: 2 I play footy with and one I used to be in a (work) team with until this year.
So moving is viable, but yeah, dunno if it'll be wise at this time.
Still, first snidey comment, I'll up me laptop and shift!
Some people will be really angry inside, so you may get them venting off in your direction, dont take it to heart if that happens, their right to be upset. Just play it cool.
They have just laid of a selection of managers at my place, but they seem ok about it now - I think they were worse when there was speculation as to who was going but no one knew who.
It is more difficult when its the majority of staff that are on the way out though. I was involved in a really nasty major industrial dispute a few years ago, which resulted in 120 profesional (they could probably spell better than me) people losing their jobs.
A minority of the finished staff started to get a kick from targeting 'scabs'. This soon escalated to the degree that security staff had to be deployed at peoples homes. I'm sure you'll have no problems on that scale, but you may see a few parallels in the office. Just be very careful not to being drawn into conflict even if your baited into it, dont take sides - deep down most people will their will understand your situation. I appear to be preaching so will stop it right now! 😳
Might be worth keeping some spare tubes at work, so if you come out at 5.30 and your tyres have 20 odd holes in them . . . . . .

It appears she is so far - although some more experienced, better (simply better.) managers are out.
Don't blame you (windsurfing) I'm in 2 minds about getting my, currently dusty bike, muddy. Mrs is giving me stick right at this moment too 😳
Kerv - secret in this case seems to have been to change roles 18 mnths ago, into a more specialised role. As I'm the only person in our European wing who can do it, I've been retained. I had doubts about taking this job, but if I'd stayed where I was, I'd have been out. (Hence the narrow escape!)
