once every 10+ years purchase

hmmm, i remain to be convinced you'll see anything like 10 years service from a flat screen TV

I have the previous generation of Samsung and no problems so far. I am also not convinced you will get 10 years use out of it, reckon closer to 5-6 years if you are lucky. Good luck whatever you go for, says the man who took 2 years deciding what laptop to buy! 😯

I'd take the Samsung of those two. Usually I'd say whichever Panasonic Viera falls within budget though.

The sound on that samsung is rubbish. Bloke at work bought one.
Also the LED backlight (not to be confused with organic LEDs) is not a good implementation, in that it shines light in from the side and reflects it up with prisms. The good LED backlit TV's use individual LED's to light segments of the screen separately.

built in HD tuner

Don't have an aerial, just a SKY HD box so Freeview not an issue

Any particular reason you've shortlisted those two, btw?

I went through this process last year, my shortlist ended up between a Toshiba and a Panasonic. Went for the Tosh and love it to little mintballs.

+1 for mike. Try looking at them all side by side.

Having had the first of the second generation X1 Sony plasmas, (only £3700! gulp)that has lasted 7 years (with only the freeview tuner giving up the ghost), & a newer Panasonic plasma with freesat (costing a mere £800), I would say the Panasonic has a far better picture, but the Sony has a far better sound.

That doesn't help does it?

+1 Panasonic tellys. Mine's plasma, I think.

I hate LCD tellys, they make everything look plastic.
