Moved into a new flat a couple of weeks ago and seem to be finding quite of few of these little beggars in the bathroom (note - the one in the photo may be a little squashed from killing it). They're normally less than a centimetre long and about 1mm wide and are quite quick little buggers for their size:

Wasn't so bothered about them being in the bathroom but caught a few in the kitchen this weekend.
Going to phone the landlord but wondered if you could help identify it. The property is an old converted mill and the ceiling is the original wooden floor boards by the looks of it.

Lepisma saccharina or silverfish
edit, they like damp or rotten wooded areas, a bit like woodlice. They don't bite or sting and are really living fossils.
Cheers Roper. Seems to be exactly what they are (after reading on Wikipedia).
Now to see how to get rid of them. Could be difficult I guess.
I think they can be fairly easy to remove. Basically get rid of their food, like damp wood or mould. The problems occur if it's the floorboards or skirting which are feeding them.
If you get the chance, have a close look at one or two though, they are fascinating little things.
Why are they called saccharina? They taste sweet or something?
