For the eldest daughter who has accumulated some savings with her weekend job and fancies upgrading from her Windows Nokia 606 clunker.

So, the OS doesn’t really matter.

It doesnt need to have the best camera, or best speakers, or best screen.

She is a little reluctant to go with apple and has suggested a Huawei P20 Mate Lite or something of that name.

Ta

I bought Mrs. Mogrim a Huawei Mate 20 Lite for Christmas and it's a nice piece of kit, good VFM. For that price though you could probably get the non-lite Mate 20 though which I'm sure is even better.

I recently bought a Samsung A8 for that sort of money. Knocks spots off my old Note3.

iPhone SE is still a very reasonable choice if she is considering apple though.

Xiaomi mi8 from Gearbest - just over 300 quid for their flagship phone.

Moto G6 plus and some cash in hand.

This.
My work G6 just works and works, and is smooth, good pics etc.
My own XZ1 is superb pics, waterproof and marginally faster - but it costs a lot more. It's also a slippery bugger so lives in a case.

A Galaxy S8 as suggested by Kryton is what I'd go for at £400. 18 months ago that was an £800 phone, and it's a spectacular piece of engineering. Only weakness is battery life which is merely ok, everything else is good, and it really is a beautiful thing.

Wouldn't go wrong with the Huwawei 20 Mate Lite. Gets a decent Which review - Pros - Fast processor, good battery, decent display, Cons -Call clarity, low-quality headphones, cameras failed to impress.

I'm happy with the Samsung A8 I have just bought. Rated better by Which "The Samsung Galaxy A8 is the best mid-range handset on the market and, what's more, the best value smartphone full stop. " Mine was £250ish from Laptops Direct.

Can't see past the A8 for that money unless 32GB isn't enough internal storage (it takes a micro SD card).

I'm all for older phones for cheaper, as it will still likely be "better" than anything current for the same money but you do have to account for manufacturers stopping support & updates.

I've got a Moto Play Z that still works perfectly except Motorola have stopped updating it and left it with a Bluetooth connectivity issue. Was fixed in the next Android update, but Moto won't give me that 🙁

I have a OnePlus 3 that has never let me down and is still going strong with regular software updates. I think we're up to the OnePlus 6T now. Not sure what the latest version costs but I think you can get it or the previous model for around £400. On paper it's a similar spec to the latest flagships.

Another A8 (64Gb Dual SIM model) user here. Almost 12 months old and performs as new.

Great phone; £330 new, with a case and a 64Gb card.

Pocofone F1 is supposed to be decent value for money, unbox therapy on YouTube seemed to be very positive about it for the price (£300 or thereabouts).

I recently got a grade A refurb Galaxy s8+ for under £280 which I am very happy with. Great battery life, screen and camera.

I got a Mate 10 pro for that money about six months ago and it's fantastic.
Have a look at AO for decent prices and good service.

If you don't need "best camera, or best speakers, or best screen", why bother spending £400? There must be lots of phones that would satisfy your requirements for under £200.
If you do want to spend more, have a look at second hand stuff on CEX. I just bought a mint Pixel2 from CEX for £300. That's half the price of a new one, for a superb camera phone.

Can't believe I didn't suggest a Mate 10 Pro, what with me having one and all...

Waterproof, great camera and screen.

Spotted these on Appliances direct.
