just their hobby innitam i right in thinking if its a loud exhaust on an Aston that's ok but if it's a Corsa they should be castrated?
Yeah - I kinda asked the same earlier...
So the issue isn't that people don't like loud exhausts - people just don't like young people with big exhausts on cheap cars?
MF - didn't have my first car until I was 23 as I grew up in London and found the public transport system to be more than enough.
First car was a MkIII Fiesta Si 1.4 when I was 23 - and yes I did love that car. I fitted a decent stereo to it and that was about it.
And yes, I replaced the suspension myself when it needed doing, rear drums, front wishbones etc.
BUT, that and all the stuff you mention in your post has nothing to do with a bunch of neds (normally 4 or 5) driving round and round and round sometimes for literally hours disturbing a perfectly pleasant evening with the same monotonous droning again and again from their ridiculous exhausts. If they were going somewhere and went past once, that's fine. But when it goes on for most of an evening, it can get a bit much.
I don't look down at the young kids and laugh at their cars. What a ridiculous thing to say.
Fair play to them if they want to spend their hard earned on a car and if they want to do it up, how they wish. I might not agree with some of their styling cues, but that's not really my problem and I doubt they give a toss what an old git like me things of it anyway.
My issue specifically is with the cars that have had ridiculously loud exhuasts fitted, which are then driven round and round and round meaning I can't relax outside on a nice, warm evening because of the din.
And yes, sometimes you get what you might call a 'performance' car go past with an exhaust as loud if not louder than Ned boys Magnex stainless can.
But, GENERALLY they aren't going round & round in circles, but going past once and then perhaps going past in the other direction sometime later.
And they don't GENERALLY travel in convoys of 4 or more, making the noise even worse.
Stumpy - relax and consider that not all people will behave in the same way you do. If someone is not breaking the law, what does it matter if they 'drive round and round' apart from it being a bit too noisy for you? If you don't like road noise, don't live near a road.
Unfortunately the views of the OP sometimes result in total injustices such as British GT and Formula 3 races being banned at Castle Combe a few years back on noise grounds.
I still cannot believe that some idiots moved to that village and then a) complained about the noise from the circuit and b) actually got such a stricter noise limit imposed!
Back to the original topic though, as others have said there is quite a list of standard cars that make a lot more noise than a supped up Supermini. Subaru Imprezza Turbos, any supercar, most VTEC engines over a certain RPM, air cooled Porsche 911's etc
So long as the drivers of noisy cars are considerate and drive well I have no problem with them. The world would be very dull if we were all the same and didn't express ourselves as individuals - which is why most people modify cars.
Passed my test in a mini clubman and always wanted a 1275GT..great cars !
MF - that is pretty much my point though - I do live near a main road and for 99.9% of the time, it is not an issue.
There is a bus stop on both sides of the road within about 50feet of the house and this is not an issue, the local Tesco lorries regularly go past the end of the road and this is not an issue, there is an industrial estate about 2 mins away and as such there are quite a few delivery vans, trucks, HGVs etc going past which aren't an issue, there are two blokes down the road who own loud GSX-Rs and these aren't an issue, there is a bloke who drives his Tiger kit car past quite regularly at the weekend and this is not an issue............etc. etc.
But, it is the convoy of neds going past REPEATEDLY that is annoying with their potato cannon exhausts booming. And it may be legal (or it may not), but that doesn't mean it's not inconsiderate or annoying.
You say relax and consider that not all people will behave in the same way I do.....I totally understand that not all people will behave as I do. But equally, should the neds with their exhaust not also understand that perhaps on a quiet Friday evening there are probably quite a few people who don't want to be disturbed all evening by their loud exhausts repeatedly driving past their house?? Or are they somehow exempt from this 'understanding of others' nature??
Me being sat inside watching TV, drinking a beer is in NO way affecting their ability to drive round and round in circles. But them driving round and round in circles with loud exhausts attached DOES affect my ability to hear the TV in my living room at a 'normal' level and relax with a beer.
Stumpy - fair enough and I can understand your frustration, but at the end of the day they are just another road user using the road, albeit in a manner that some may think is inconsiderate. Unfortunately they have as much right as anyone else to be there.

I did like mine - I had a choice of being given my dad's 3 yr old Sierra 1.6GL (he got a company car) or him selling it and getting me a car of my choice. I explained how it was unfair that I got such an expensive car (in the Sierra) and that he should sell it and put SOME of the money towards a car for me and treat himself with the rest.
I never said it was actually because I didn't want to drive around in an old-man car and that I had always coveted 1275GTs.
He ended up selling the Sierra to my older brother (he had already been bought one car when he was younger and dad was just trying to be fair) and it went on and on and on for years (he still has the reg. plate on his Mondeo now). The Mini rusted away one mildly damp evening about 20 years ago ๐
Had to work for a living today, thanks to Stumpy for typing what I would have typed had I been here... I don't know you, do I? ๐
Fraz - MemberAs I said, I fitted a Termignoni full system to my Ducati a couple of years back, but I couldn't ride it without the baffles 'cause I just thought I was too much of a nuisance riding out of my estate on a Sunday morning.
Pot.
Kettle.
Black.
I thought somebody might pick up on that, but no, it's not the same. The Termis with baffles were barely louder than stock and I was considerate when I rode it even with the baffles. But we're tallking about reasonable behavior here, and a daft bean can on the end of one of the cars I'm talking about is MUCH, MUCH louder than an exhaust from a motorbike with a standard can, or a VTEC, or anything else.

I'm not saying that. My next door neighbour bought himself an M3 CSL a few years ago. The stock exhaust was, as expected, pretty loud anyway, but if he'd modified it to be without baffles I'd have thought that was out of order too.

I'm pleased you said 'sometimes' because I don't see how you can link my opening post of knobs in little cars with daft exhausts, driving late at night up and down the roads in relatively large numbers with the noise coming from a racetrack on a Sunday afternoon 12 times a year.
FWIW, I live pretty close to the airport and that doesn't bother me at all. I knew what the craic was with that, and besides, the noise from the nearby road is MUCH more bothersome.
The thing that worries me most is that the Chavez up Novas, etc probably haven't got valid insurance. I'd be surprised if all the mods had been declared to the insurer
Personally, I think if your going to have a big bore exhaust, you need a big bore engine to go with it. The wee small corsas just sound crap.
V8 or nothing in my books...
A 4.0 with only the headers on:

and an 3.5 with only a tiny silencer ... ahhh happy days. I miss that car.

POSTED 3 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST
is a pointless assumption and is simply chavism - assuming something based on the sort of people you assume they are.
The exhaust on my van snapped clean off about a foot from the manifold a few weeks back on my way to do the Cut Gate route
For the rest of the drive and then all the way home me and my mate were lovin it,,,never seen so many people looking at us and laughing !!
Was a bit gutted when i put the new downpipe on
Some people are petrolheads and some just use cars to get from A2B

While I agree nothing sounds quite like a V8, I'm not sure size has much to do with it - I get 50% more power from a 2 litre than my BMW drag from a 3.5 litre V6 of the same era. Size isn't everything, tuning is.
The wee small corsas just sound crap.
That's because they're not a performance engine and often the exhaust is not a well tuned system, it's just a tube.

So you are saying that. What you're saying is that it can be a noisy car so long as it's stock. If a corsa with a 4" through system is as noisy as a stock CSL (I'm not saying it is), then it's no more out of order than the CSL.

While I agree, and you can't really use such assumptions as judgements, it's a fairly reasonable guess. Most of the people I knew with modified cars didn't have anything declared. Of course most of the mods did nothing for the car but make it more theivable. But it's not always going to be the case, it was cheaper for me to insure mine with a specialist insurer with all mods declared and guaranteed valuation than it was to insure it with a mainstream insurer.

To quote termignonis website
termignoni exhaust provide a deep booming sound which echoes over a great distance which gets admiration from anywhere you go.
It is EXACTLY the same thing. Difference being you are annoyed at it now.....
Do you get my point?
On a more helpful note if it really is that bad how many times have you called the police about it?
Lets face it ranting on a forum isn;t going to get the "problem" solved.
Have you heard Termis with baffles Fraz? There is no way they are much louder than stock; without they are ridiculous though (which I guess is what their website's quoting),
I'm still not sure I do get your point, really.
I haven't rang the police either. I can see that being really fruitful. Instead I think I need to lobby somebody, I have emailed the council previously to try and get the 50mph limit lowered. The road goes in between two estates, and is a throwback to when there were no houses close by. They've not re-assessed it since.
Ignoring the point im making the first thing councils etc will look to is the police to see how many reports they have had to deal with about the matter. No reports or incidents then theres very little that will happen with regards to lowering speed limits/traffic calming etc.
Why not give them a call and explain the situation if its annoying you that badly.
