So at the moment I've been a stay at home mum and earning some money doing commissions but I'm feeling I need more and need to get away from the four walls of my house. I've been thinking of studying again going down the illustration route. My problem is the cost. I graduated 20 years ago with a biology degree and received a grant then and any loans were paid off. The question is am I being silly thinking of doing this and how would I possibly pay £1000's without robbing a bank are there any options for someone in my position?
I don't think so, unless you can find a specific scholarship/grant. I looked into it after my employer fell through on the funding for my MSc. Seems once you've gone through the system once you have to pay yourself if you want anything extra. Be interested to hear if anyone knows of anything.
Just seems so unfair if that's the case opportunities seem so thin on the ground it will be interesting if something can be done
When I did my MSc in 2001 I paid for it myself with a Career Development Loan, dunno if they're still about. The advantage was basically that you didn't have to start paying it back until 3 months after you finished your course, but other than that it was a regular bank loan really.
What level are you wanting to study at? Funding questions are very different for UG, PG, college. And also vary by region. TBH the best starting point is generally to contact the institution, see if they have a funding or scholarships officer- they can usually advise on all sources of funding not just scholarships etc. (which you should totally investigate btw)
If it's postgrad, then PCDL might be a good option but you need to check that the course is eligible. This isn't as simple as it sounds; actually getting a course onto the register is a pain in the baws so subjects that you might assume will be covered, sometimes aren't.
Are you wanting to study specifically to facilitate illustrating, or just for the fun of it?
A friend of ours did a MA is Children's Illustration at Anglia Ruskin University and now earns a modest living as an illustrator.
Some funding options..
Are you looking to a first degree or a post graduate degree?
I was thinking of a first degree but looking at sites such as money saving expert and googling you can't get funding for another degree.
You can get up to 10,000 in a loan for a masters but i don't know how how easy it is to get the full amount. Calling the student finance company would be my recommendation they're usually really helpful
I'm kind of assuming you're in England but the rules are a wee bit different in Scotland... So if you are, speak to SAAS. (don't bother with their website, it's awful)
