Novel things making the news / unexciting things not making the news #2:

The current headline on the Guardian website is that a man was killed by a falling tree. In Ireland.

Coronavirus deaths in UK; about one every 8 minutes. Around 1200 last week.

Aye doris5000 ,I was thinking just that.
The storms this week have taken a lot of the attention off the GovUK gang.

The kids had sheets on their backs tied to their ankles and wrists.

That would have been me as a child #whatcouldpossiblygowrong 🙂

Even the externally grumpy Windy Wilson reckons this is worth the coverage it’s been getting. That’s enough for me

My mind is made up – its the old classic “its only important if it happens in the south east”!

TBF the forecast is for the south west and east to be hardest hit by this storm

I think we need a sticky thread so northerners and Scots can complain every time there’s a storm that either does or doesn’t get mentioned…whichever way round it is that they want

And another sticky thread so Southern Softies can moan about northerners and Scots complaining every time...😋😂

It’s got a bit wild up here in Northumberland now too

Surely this mythical land of which you speak @Drac is not actually real??? There's nothing really up here after all. Just saying.

Some serious skills on show. If I were a passenger, I would be quite happy to be diverted away from London today!

After 3 attempts (3!) the pilot has to divert as it's SOP!

Not even 1/3 of the country! Its the same as ever – hits the south east its important. Hit anywhere else in the UK its not

At least all the wind we get up here in Edinburgh hasn't managed to dislodge that chip.

I suppose those people in Croydon are all soft southerners and apparently much less dense than stout Scottish heroes which is why they are being blown over into the road?

It's obviously because Croydon is full off malnourished vegans who have less mass than the folk north of Hadrians wall

Have you not heard Mols, we've got a chip on both shoulders to weigh us down up here.

No doubt some fairly average weather has been over reported in the past, but I think most of us would agree that todays weather is a bit different.

OH its different down south alright.  I am not saying it should not be reported but when you live outside the south then its obvious the southern bias visible

its just the usual pro southern england bias - half the country when its less than 1/3 and so on.

Never mind north/south, won't someone think of our French cousins - 152mph near boulogne according to that wind map ^ 😯

When there were floods down south, northerners whinged that it was getting all the coverage. Then next winter there were floods up north and that got all the coverage, northerners went quiet, southerners didn't whinge, we just watched. Cos you know what, neither incident was in my local area and I watched them both.

What do you want news to be about? Do you want airtime to be allocated proportional to population? What about land area? If it were about land area there'd be a lot of coverage of what deer are currently eating on a moor in Scotland and almost nothing about politics.

News is actually reported based on what people want to hear about. When there's mass disruption, people want to hear about it. That's the reason that a foot of snow in the South East gets coverage and a foot of snow in Aviemore does not. Because it disrupts the former and not the latter.

@molgrips - are you referring to the Somerset levels flooding where a handful of rich farms in safe Tory seats got wet (bear in mind they're at or below sea level anyway)?

No I was thinking of the Carlisle floods which were extensively covered. ISTR there was flooding the previous year in the south which precipitated the moaning.

Somerset levels flood all the time, the only time I can remember it being on telly was when that bloke build a levee around his property and got completely surrounded. That was newsworthy because it was a shocking image, not because he was in a Tory seat I'm pretty sure.

Its in KMPH.

Posted from the sunny south east whilst holding up my artisan fence panel to stop it leaning too far and leaving the koi carp in the shade.

We've survived. Wind is easing now. Looks like my hatch-battening game was up to scratch, I don't think anything's moved except the piles of leaves that had previously been behind the stuff I moved myself.

I struggle to see an imbalance in weather reporting tbh, basically everything gets reported that is out of the norm.

someone who only a fortnight ago started a thread complaining about STW being “grumpy and unfunny” blunders into a harmless, fairly jovial, thread with a grumpy comment and immediately turns it into an unfunny us vs them argument ☹️ You couldn’t make it up 😂

BBC: 'Much of Scotland's coastline still being battered.' They will literally deep fry anything.

🙂

I still can remember my first chippie visit North of the wall (Fort Willian IIRC) just about everything battered: bounty, cream egg, mars bar. At that point the gap between life expectancy North / South of the wall suddenly made sense.

The only place I've encountered a deep fried Mars bar was near Portsmouth strangely enough.

I was in the chippie the other night, the woman behind me made her order.

'Fish and chips and a kids burger and chips.'

'would you like that battered'

'pardon'

'the burger, would you like that battered'

'no thanks'

30 seconds later, child says to mum. 'are we still in Scotland?'

Certainly used to be a thing when I worked in a chippie. Just meant you could do them in the pans rather than grill or shallow fry. Can't say I've seen one in a very, very long time.
