I thought it was ok he is a sportsman not a public speaker he was clearly very pleased , surprised and in awe of the award which was genuine and not fake. he thanked lots of people..what do you want some stand up?

FFS what's your favourite winners speech then ? No one remembers them anyway

He's normally got so much to say for himself in Interviews; just goes to show he wasn't expecting it or had anything prepared.
Once again thanks and gives recognition to his team mates before anything else. Top bloke and well deserving, great to see cycling in people's minds more.
Not sure why people have a bug up their ass about him.

I was actually impressed with his speech - in the sense that given you normally can't shut him up, and he does interview so well, it shows just how much it meant to him. Not sure about the surprise - he clearly had a speech prepared, but just lost it. Or maybe he's not so good when he is trying to make a rehearsed speech rather than doing it off the cuff?

it's still a bit manly though eh? there must be somewhere a female athlete with more peronality than contender "Andrew Murray Moved ahead of Roger Federer to be world number three".

Birgit Fischer would kick his ass

His being Redgraves? Indeed - I note in his build up they mentioned him being the first to win gold in an endurance sport in 5 successive Olympics. Without the boycott in 1984, Birgit would doubtless have won gold at her 6th successive games in 2000 (she also won gold in 2004) - given she won 3 golds at the WC in both 1983 and 1985. 8 golds in total over 6 Olympiads even so.

So pleased he won and that cycling is getting the recognition it deserves.

What I was amazed to find out though, is that Tommy Simpson had also one SPOTY. I had no idea that a) it had been going on that long or that b) Tommy Simpson had won.

I'm glad to see Khan at the bottom with a piffling 6000 votes. I really can't stand the bloke. Here's why: (from Wikipedia)

On 23 October 2007, Khan was convicted of careless driving at Bolton Crown Court and given a six-month driving ban and a £1000 fine. The conviction related to an incident that occurred on 2 March 2006 in the centre of Bolton, when Khan's car hit and broke the leg of Geoffrey Hatton, a pedestrian who was using a pelican crossing while Khan was travelling at 47 mph in a 30 mph zone and overtaking in the wrong lane.[46] He was cleared of dangerous driving but charged with the lesser offence of careless driving and the pedestrian received an interim payment of £40,000. Geoffrey Hatton never fully recovered from the incident and died soon afterwards with Khan passing on his sympathies.[49] Khan was also summoned to appear in court in Rochdale on 26 October 2007, accused of travelling in excess of 140 mph on the M62 motorway on 31 December 2006. He failed to appear and the case was adjourned to 2 November 2007, with the District Judge warning that he would issue an arrest warrant if the accused did not appear by then. He was also charged with not producing his driving licence and insurance certificate. On 7 January 2008 Khan was fined £1000 and banned for 42 days for the speeding offence.

On 12 July 2009, Khan was once again involved in a motoring incident, this time a collision with a young cyclist. However, no action will be taken against Khan after police concluded that he was not to blame for the incident in Moor Lane following interviews with a number of witnesses.

And the fact he has had a shit year culminating in losing his title to an underdog, then having the audacity to challenge the result at arbitration.

Bad loser.

Andy Murray 18,754 (5.48%)

i'm astonished that 5.48% of the population think that andy murray has a personality at all.

Also to note that the split voting from golf and cricket hasn't made a difference. Cav still would have won by many many bike lengths.

Assuming that the WIkipedia entry on Kahn is correct, he shouldn't even have been nominated

Recon his speach proved my point. No personality. Actually walked away from the tv, I was so bored.

Agree he does a good job of being humble. Im not 100% sure its genuine. He has to play up the role of his team mates as he NEEDS them on his side. Any sign of lack of gratitude or dominance then someone will wonder why they are busting their guts for him, and will challenge him- then its all over. His arrogance comes out every now and again, which I feel shows his true self. I may be wrong though.

Not taking away from his achievenments. But for a sports 'personality' I can think of better.

why are people going on about 'personality'? it's not about their small talk or how the work the room, kissing babies and saucy jokes with grannies. it's about hard work, talent, dedication, achievement and winning.
anyone who thinks otherwise needs to step away from the dictionary.

Remember he is still only 26, how many of us could stand up at that age and do an amazing speech!

He mentioned that his GF is expecting a sprog - do you think he needed his lead-out man for that?

Mrs Gti reckoned the poor girl must have been a bit sore after a session with Cav....

Having googled her (NSFW) I'm fairly certain she'd throw him around the bedroom like a wet tracksuit

This.

The prize is for the best sports personality of the year. They are all personalities, and the public votes for the one they think has had the best year. It isn't the sportsperson with the best personality.

Is it that hard?
