[#12918797]

Recently I've been back to my childhood home of Devon, and naturally I am now looking at properties I can't afford to buy.

I also know that many expensive houses can look stupid if they're, shall we say, individual. Especially in the North.

But just look at this...

The decoration isn't my taste, but that is amazing. I love that bar!

But would you rather live in it than your place? I wouldn't, even if a tricolor would look great on that flagpole. Might be useful as a second home to invite people you detest to to make them feel jealous.

I'd rather live in it than Kelly Brook's undergarments, let alone my place.

Far too big for me, and Dartmouth’s a bit out the way.

I was down there today, got the steam train from Paignton to Kingswear & walked back on the SW coast path via Brixham.

I think it's nice, the blue and purple colours are nothing a bit of paint and/or re-papering won't fix.

7 million seems a bit optimistic though?

How many human lives would you have to exploit to afford such a place?

Struggling to see the issue here. Lick of paint and sheel be reet. Apart from the bar though, that rocks.

It's got a jetty right down to the harbour, so you can bathe in human waste to your hearts content, without the annoying maintenence costs of a hot tub!

Surely the point of posting rightmove listings on here is that you get to flick through the photo gallery and go

Plus ambiguous border status, so you could have a healthy side-gig in import/export!

Definitely an investment property, that one!

Agree.  The interior is down to the fact that new money bought it I would guess.  When buying a £7MM house a budget of £1MM wouldn't be outrageous to change it to your own taste.

Thousands of folks go weekly to National Trust held properties that are essentially the same thing as this, only a bit bigger and a couple of hundreds of years older.

That looks exactly how I imagine the place where Commander Povey from The Navy Lark would live. Right down to the ghastly decor and idiotic flagpole.  I bet it’s piped to the top every morning.  Surprised there’s no cannon on the decking to announce 13:00hrs.

Why do rich people never have any taste?

Choose a style: neo-classical where is everything is velour, chairs look uncomfortable and the wallpaper is purple, or American Psycho where everything is black and white and the chairs look uncomfortable, or Russian Oligarch where everything (literally) is white Italian Marble and the chairs are actually uncomfortable

It's not worth it for them to be bothered by interior design, becasue 1. they never spend any time in one place, so it's never "theirs" 2. Some want houses that are ready immediately , so they just buy everything, including the décor, and the previous owner did exactly the same. 3. No family knick-naks, because: 3rd trophy wife, and 4. they're not actually that happy, so their houses are miserable as well.

those are both relatively modest for dartmouth. there is a place just upstream from the 1st one listed with a drive-in boat lift. pontoons are for peasants.

That reminds me there was a gorgeous £4.5m place,  modern,  on one of the Cornwall estuaries with similar views, that was the prize on an Omaze draw a month plus ago.   No idea why as I'd never played it but it kept popping up on my YouTube. It looked out of this world and I nearly played the draw because of it.   Saw a news article last week,  a granny won,  used it for a family gathering and is now selling.  If I'd have won I'd be selling everything else to try and afford to retire early and live there for the rest of my days.

I got to witness the most sumptuously posh road rage incident along the road to that house. Two old boys in shabby chic cars (probably old Volvos - the really posh don't need baubles) came to an impasse on a tight section and neither would back up. Some genteel hand gestures then a some very polite 'toots' of the horn. Finally one backed up a few yards to a slightly wider section. As they inched past each other one shouted out a very haughty "I'll remember you" to which the other replied "And I you Sir!" then both defiantly looked in the other direction. A glorious moment.

but at the time they were all exactly like this, showy-offy baubles to tell everyone how rich they were. They're only "nice" now. because instead of neo-classical, age has just made them classical.

Look through Chippendale catalogues, and it's pretty much the same as today, For this money designs are "neatly" for this much money designs are "Exceeding Neatly" and they all went for exceeding...

Does anybody else flick through the pictures thinking nah not that bothered until you see a clips of a library and think.

I BASICALLY WANT A LIBRARY WITH LADDERS ON RUNNERS AND POSSIBLY A NARROW SPIRAL STAIRCASE CONSTRUCTED TASTEFULLY INTO THE CORNER OF THE ROOM.

It's not that it's ostentatious (minimalism can be ostentatious). It's that it's bad. It's ugly. It doesn't come together. It's naff. It's uncool.

It's a mishmash of Ye Olde-looking Crap from different periods and then a bunch of furniture from the big box retailer opposite B&Q in the same room. Look at the light fixtures in the kitchen. Look at the bedroom in picture 9 - flock purple wallpaper and matching bedlinen on a silver California King bed. 🤮 Look at the 1990s bathroom in picture 10. Look at the little bar with the uncomfortable seats that doesn't match the style of the room that it's in but also doesn't clash with it. Look at the cinema with the Only Fools and Horses caricature and feral black leatherette recliners.

It's not that it's expensive and show-offy. It's that it looks like an Australian's nightmare.

If you had a cinema room, you'd think you'd be really into, you know, cinema. Not put Del Trotter pics all over the walls.

For those looking for a more contemporary style, this one just up the coast, might be more your cup of tea.

That one is a bit better, but still a couple of tacky moments and no soul at all.

I see that it has a "unique spiral wine cellar", identical to the other house. I'll be using it to store my collection of baked beans and speghetti rings obviously

Edit: i see that the back yard sex pond is plumbed in so I'm worried that won't be fetid enough for my tastes. I'm oot
