[#10076322]

the first time i've seen a bike older than mine!

The 14 year old me would have given his left bollock for one of these 😀

Is the front rack because they have run out of space for crap on the bars??

ha!  yeah there were a few weird things - like the 2 computer sensors on the chainstay, but one was lined up with the tyre.

It looks like it hasn't been on an adventure in quite a while.

But still.  XT thumbies!  The spiral logo!  (I used to have a t-shirt with that on it)

You can't call XT Thumbies "crap" ! 😆

A light, bag mount and a computer bracket is crap?

I guess for some, the look is most important.

Yesterday my colleague asked me to check his skipping gears on his commuter his girlfriend's dad had given him.

92 Marin Palisades, (grey & fluoro yellow) with all OEM parts !

(Was just a stiff link btw)

I had to give it a little test ride just to make sure, handled as well as you'd imagine with its 130mm stem

One of the computer sensors is probably a cadence sensor. Some old Cateye computers had this feature.

The bike racks at my local station are like a mountain bike timeline from the best museum ever. A few "racers" from earlier too. I must look very dodgy when I'm waiting for a train as I'm looking rather too intently at the bikes.

This should really be a sticky thread.

I guess for some, the look is most important.

And for others, making passive-agressive digs at people to try and put them down is most important.

Dayum - I had one of these back in the day, almost identical but the rear half of the frame was red. I think the one in the photo is the following year's model, so 1994? Nice stroll down amnesia lane 🙂

IIRC the 94 models were the ones with the grey fades (and no spiral logo - boo) - I reckon this is earlier than that?

1993 was the grey front/coloured rear end, but it seems this champagne colour was also an option

I've got a 1991 Explosif in the garage ( with Pace RC30 forks!). Owned it from new and was using as a commuter until about 4 years ago.

I should really find a new home for it

If it has original handlebars, they are probably about half the width of current bars - hence the cluttered look when there isn't a lot on there really

There's a GT in the racks here that has a U-brake, so I assume it's '92 or earlier? It's been repainted so I don't know the model. 7 speed rapidfires and a dura-ace rear mech!

Thats a 93 Kilauea in the USA colour scheme. The decals are pre-1994 when the logo changed from this....

to this type

There was no Kilauea before 1993.

This is a catalogue pic of the bike in the OP's bike rack but UK colour scheme:

Most of the components seem to be original including the gear shifters and brakes but stem has been changed.

I have a 1994 Kilauea which I bought in 1994 and restored about 4 years ago, here she is....

Don't ask me how much it cost to restore and get back all the original components. Please. Upgrades for my bikes included Paul Components brake levers, XT V-brakes, Flite Ti saddle, Yeti grips and some very rare Ritchey Alpha Bite skinwall Kevlar tyres. Rides beautifully even now, I absolutely love it - I did have a shorter Velocity stem sprayed up when I restored the bike which has helped make it fit better for me (now 100mm rather than 130mm).

I converted it for a short time to do a C2C and I am not sure if my newer Genesis TDF is actually any better than it!

Errr I also have a 1992 GT Tequesta, also rides really nicely - my first proper MTB in 1992!!

DX thumbies and a period mod of XT SLR plus STI levers units with the gear shifters cut off and smoothed - best canti brake levers there ever was.

XT canti's (first low-pro ones) with Scott Matthauser Superbrake blocks. I have been obsessed with having the best brakes since 1992!

(Onza L bends added for a Peaks ride!!)

My only bike is now 14 years old – where did that time go!…

My oldest is 26 years old. 2nd oldest 24yo, 3rd oldest I think about 8 years old, 4th oldest a bit newer and newest one is 3 years old I think!

And they are the ones I ride......there may be more..

I may have too many bikes.
