I commute everyday for approx 10 miles along the M27 motorway . There are currently  bridge repairs being done on a stretch of approx 1 mile  near to Portsmouth.

The lanes are narrowed and a 50mph speed limit introduced . This  is , I believe, to some extent to protect the roadworkers  who could be working on the bridge or its surrounding areas.

Why  then does it seem to always be a white Tansit van with high viz hatching and the obligatory ' Motorway Maintenence' signage that  blasts  through at 70+?

Is it because they are not working on that stretch , therefore they do not need proecting perhaps?

Is it because they are not actual 'Motoway Maintenance ' people at all,   they just dig holes where  they are  told , but  having   the stickers gives them carte blanche to crack on and not slow down?

To be fair , its not just them , it is the majority of cars who rattle through at 60 -70 all  bunched up and in a real hurry . These people must love their jobs to be risking a hefty fine in their  rush to get to work at 0615.

Current section of the a52 going out of derby towards notts. 40mph limit but no cameras, I so wish they'd sneak a few on as there are some complete bell ends driving on there. I started to make a lane change on Saturday to pass a learner and I swear a Merc came up the outside at at least 70mph without a care in the world.

Nah, it's because they are driving gods and have made the judgement that it is perfectly safe for their driving skills given the road conditions. Which is fine until something happens beyond their judgement. Then someone usually dies.

I commute everyday for approx 10 miles along the M27 motorway . Getting up to 50mph would be amazing! Guess I leave a bit after you!

Seems unless theres average speed cameras no one gives a toss about workers safety. Cars rule above any common sense / consideration, as cyclists we know that.

On the other hand, have you actually seem anyone working there?

40mpg +1

Came through the stretch the OP is talking about tonight and a significant proportion of traffic was going well over 50.

My perception is that people speed through that section and similar for two main reasons.

1) they're thoughtless / lazy so don't actively want to slow down or think about their actions and there's sweet FA chance of getting caught 99 times out of 100

2) they're trying not to get run off the road by one of those  referred to in 1) above so they keep pace with the flow of speeders

They introduced a 20mph limit across most of Edinburgh.

People get quite infuriated if you drive at 20mph. Flashy lights and jumping up and down in their seats and so much spit on the windows they need wipers on the inside. Though that may be the potholes.

Supposedly road casualties have gone down 25% since it was introduced though a causal link hasn't been proven.

Section of dual carriageway near me had weekly crashes often serious. The driving gods refused to believe it was speed, they would blame anything but.

A speed reduction(60) was introduced, there hasnt been an accident for months.

There has been a few hundred folk caught and fined for speeding who then of course blame to council for picking on the poor motorists.

People are often nobheads, vehicles give them power.

Ahh OP, I was going to post something about this section.

I use the M27 a lot, since the roadworks have been up it seems it’s only me (and you by the sounds of it) that actually drive it at 50mph.

It is pointless having the limit there because it’s not camera’d nor monitored.. so folks just drive it flat chat as they’ve always done.

Try the 40mph section of the A14, currently due to run till December 2020, so probably December 2021. It's crap using it everyday and I don't believe the cameras are functional at all so people ignore them frequently. Lanes are bloody narrow though!

The 50mph speed limit because of works on the M60 is the best thing that has ever happened for keeping the traffic flowing. They should definitely keep it when the works are completed.

There's been a bridge repair running just south of Inverness on a dual section of the A9 for a month or two with a 30 limit past it.  I've seen a police car sitting just after the works a few times mopping up drivers quite regularly.  They could stay there all day and never not be busy.  It is like people are prepared to drop 10 mph from what they were doing and no more.

I bet you do it in the outside lane too 😆

Have you ever actually seen anyone working there though? All I've ever seen are cones. Admittedly I don't go that way very often, thank gawd.

The business park where I work has many vans. Couriers, garden furniture, temporary heating solutions, shop fitters etc.

They *all* have Highway/Motorway Maintenance signs

Personal favourite are the wagons who when encountering a 50 limit in roadworks, immediately jump out into the middle lane and blast past all the car plebs. 😎

I just set the cruise control to 50 (using the sat nav speedo, rather than the really inaccurate car one) and everyone else can be damned, regardless of what lane I'm in.

Just about to head over that way now, should I sit in the fast lane at 50?

45 would be better. It's a limit, not a target, you know!

Tbh, it's usually 49. Just in case.
