What are access laws like in Spain? Gran Canaria specifically.
I've hired a big bouncy ebike for 4 days and I've got viewranger with lots of dotted lines on it. 🙂
Can I just go anywhere, or am I likely to bump into grumpy landowners?
Also any route recommendations out of maspalomas, let me know, got a few ideas, but previous knowledge would be good!
Aye, seems to be fine to go where ever tbh, occasional "prohibido" sign, but other than that, the place seems fair game.
I only got a tiny small taste of what is out there tbh, but I've a much better sense of what the biking could be like more you discover. Defo got food for thought for future journeys.
The island goes up to 2000m meters in the centre, I only managed up to about 500m as I was just cycling in, but other wise it was great, we did drive around some of the further in roads too(up the GC60 and back out the GC65), bat shit mental the roads are btw and those are some of the easier ones from what I can make out! 😆 , so I seen there's lots of potential for batshit mental mtbing! 😆 but tbh, when the scenery is this good, I'm happy on road, fire road or single track!
This was about as far as I got, I had the bike 4 days, was out for 3, bevvying at the same time took it's toll there. 😆 So just did this route twice, both directions, was mostly fire road, mental road and some singletrack to finish which was decent enough, nothing majorly techy, few jumps and stuff back down to Maspalomas.
The other day I took a run up the coast as far as I could go to have a gander and see what's what there, not a great deal on the coast bar more fire road once you get by the resorts, but there's loads of valleys to explore going inland.. I read someone describe the island as a bike wheel, ie a central hub and loads of spokes(valleys) taking you out to the coast, seems exactly right.
For the road bike the place is a paradise i'd reckon, for mtbing, I'd say the same, but the issue there is finding the trails and more importantly, organising some transport up to the centre of the island and pick up, after that, there's most likely millions of stuff.
Anyhow, here's a few photos of the main loop I did if anyone is interested, not the most techical loop I've ever done, fairly easy tbh, but scenery wise it was awesome:

All in all glad I did it, first time I've ever "mtb'd" abroad, tentative steps, but they were illuminating! 😆
Superb Joe!.
Mates of mine hired a guide there, reckoned it was brilliant.
My experience walking and cycling is that there is no right to cycle offroad anywhere and there is much that has prohibido signs on it.
Thats Mallorca, Tenerife and Futaventura
Edit - maybe it just felt bad for access to me 'cos I am used to scotland
Aye a guide could possibly be a good idea greg, I just like wandering and discovering myself mind, but something to consider for next time, get to know the place quicker and to pick their brains on things.
Aye TJ, just the sense I got, I suspect the more populous north of the island might be a bit more restricted, dunno though, just guessing and something I need to find out more about. First abroad, doubtful the last! I was just following some GPS lines though, so that probably gave me a sense of less restriction, just taking well travelled routes..
It depends on the region and area. There are several protected areas where you are only allowed to walk and not cycle. A lot of the land is owned by the state.
If the area has the label “paraje protegido” then it’s likely a no no to cycle through the path/single track, however fireroads are always okay.
Like always I would recommend asking the local bike shop as they will know more of the area.
Why is it so confusing? Well blame the lefty ecowarriors( or eco talibans as we call them in Spain).
Cheers baboonz, just need the correct words to search!
Seems the situation is a lot more restricted than my small peak at the island suggested.
