Has anyone got any experience of these? I’ve got one and every now and again it cuts out when tracking my rides, seemingly losing reception and reverting to the unlock sim screen.

This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it’s very annoying as it usually held in my backpack and I have no idea when it goes. It was horrendous with Strava and pretty much rendered the app unusable. With Endomundo it’s been much better, but still happen every now and again.

It I change to another android phone will it be any better, or is this an android phone issue and something to be expected? Am I best off just finding a dedicated GPS tracking device or should a phone be suitable for tracking rides?

We are in the early days still with smart phones and apps some reliability issue occur versus dedicated devices. Endomondo on a Moto Razr here mostly good the odd SNAFU.

My HTC Desire works flawlessly with My Tracks but I tried another one, maybe Sportstracker and that was rubbish. Even with a clear view of the sky it would miss massive chunks of a route. I went back to My Tracks and it was back to excellent gps coverage.

So, erm, I think it's app & phone dependant.

Hmmm, so are any of the android phones ultimately reliable, or is that some are better than others?

I must admit that I went of Sony some years ago, but was tempted back by the small size and rugged credentials. Mostly happy with it, but want reliablity!

Maybe it would be better to ask what phones you have and how they perform with regards to reliabily when tracking rides with Strava or Endomondo.

Had a Motorola Defy for a couple of years which I was pretty happy with. Never had a problem with tracking rides, but seemed a little inconsistent with which segments it matched - not sure whether this was a device or Strava thing.
Just bought an Xperia Go to replace the Defy - seems OK so far; bit slower on getting a GPS fix, but seems better at tracking and matching segments.

Although the usual stuff (gmail, FB etc) is all much of a muchness between the two.

I have a defy like fuzzhead - bit of a pish phone nowadays IMO but has always been really good with strava, endomondo etc. Only reason I still have it tbh.

I found those gps helper apps you can get made a difference with the gps - occasionally the phone would get stuck looking for a signal and this never happens now.
