I'm looking to take the plunge, but want to know if there's anything A&E I should be looking at that does the same thing (without hardwiring my house!)

I have a Cocktail Audio unit which I got because my wife insisted that whatever we got had to be able to play CD's directly. It will stream to other units which then don't need a hard drive fitted and is compatible with Sonos kit as well.

Squeezebox as was (UE radio now, I think - from Logitech) was the usual other alternative. Not as well finished, but cheaper.
Or there are various non-big name brands knocking about, IIRC, on Amazon and the like
