My Scouse mate, who I'm watching this with has just watched Rooney warming up and said 'this has got Rooney 89th minute winner written all over it'

I hope he's right!

He's taken Carrick off?!! And left Pogba on?!!! WTF?!!

We've been having a swearing competition for the last ten minutes.

Another draw we should have won! He's happier than me with that result. Arse!

A good game though

City deserved to win that one.

At least Jesus looks the real deal from his cameo performance.

Well this has been a blinding match! God only how Spurs got a draw out of that?! 😯 they got battered for 90 minutes!!!

And with Liverpool losing, and us drawing, a good day for Chelski.

Makes the games tomorrow interesting. Arsenal and Chelski should both win easily, but as this season has shown... you just never know

God only how Spurs got a draw out of that?

Apart from the penalty decision, I think that with Willy Caballero in goal one of the spurs goals gets saved, Bravo is just never in the right position.

Kyle Walker was a lucky boy. Unusual for Sterling to stay on his feet

I reckon Klopp has been sussed.
Teams seem to have lfc figured out.
Or,they're knackered from running about like the clappers for 90 min every week.
Imagine how tired they'd be if they were in Europe ?!
🙂

Sterling goes down it's a penalty & red card. No wonder players fall at the softest of touch

Not so sure. All teams have a blip during the course of a season, maybe this is theirs. Missing Mane's directness and unpredictability and he does seem to have tried to solidify midfield a bit recently by playing Lallana as one of the front three and Can in the middle. Defence is awful against average sides but bizarrely very good against the top 6 - only conceded 4 and are top and unbeaten of the 'mini-league' of the top 6. It's a funny old game!

Chelsea's to lose of course - and if they avoid defeat at Anfield next up they should walk it, even with Costa messing about.

Switching between the rugby and football, and although it was a push, it would have been a soft penalty. Players should try and stay on their feet.

Stonewall penalty IMO. And red card and three game ban for Walker.

It was a penalty for sure. But if you've a reputation for going down as someone looks at you, your reputation goes before you.

Had a bet on Swansea today as Liverpool seem to be good against top teams but then get really complacent against lower ranked squads. And that's why they'll never win the title. The curse of the arrogant 'big club' mentality, trading on their history. Got a good few Scouse mates who despair at this. Putting in a great performance against us then losing to the team at the bottom of the table. Typical liverpool

That and the Sunday league defending 😆

I can't find the picture to post up (I will do when I find it) but there was a lovely picture of Bobby Charlton shaking hands with Rooney. A picture of mutual respect. Say what you like about Rooney, but he's been an amazing player for us, and great to see him pass the 250 mark, and at the same time be humble enough to respect genuine legends who've gone before

And what a ****ing strike!!! 😀

This is still my favourite

It was on my birthday, watching the game with a 50/50 split of blues and reds in the pub. Sublime!

It's funny with Rooney, personally I still don't feel he's ever fulfilled his potential after his early days for Everton and England. He seemed unplayable then.
Despite that he's in the twilight of his career managed to get both the England and Utd goalscoring records.

It's pretty harsh the treatment Rooney gets - I think because he was on the scene so young and the English media built him up to be the new Pele. Pretty selfless player though, quite to play anywhere. I do wonder whether he looked after himself well enough in terms of fitness, compared to say Ronaldo.

Oh.... I am a bitter and twisted cynic. That's not in question 🙂

I love watching Liverpool play. I really like Klippity. He's a great manager, who's teams play really attractive, high tempo football, that's brilliant to watch.

But....

You can't win titles playing like that. Ask Kevin Keegan. Case in point .... the Bournemouth game. 2 up at half time. 3 - 1 up with 15 minutes to go. So what do you do? Keep possession? Shut the game down? No... carry on chucking everything forward, seeing some mythical 8 goal glory day. And in the process leave yourself absolutely wide open at the back to the counter. Then do it again, and again, and again..... incredibly, managing to lose the game 4 -3.

Makes for fantastic viewing, but far too naive to be title contenders. Titles are won grinding out 1 nils at West Brom on a Monday night, when you're not playing very well

Charlton was in 750 ish games I think, Rooney in 550 or so, although most as a striker of course.

I've grown to like Rooney and what a fantastic buy from Sir AF. As a Gooner is pains me to say that of course but he is up there as one of the most influential players of the PL era. He did get silly contract from Moyes though but fair enough!

I think the fact he has the all-time England goal-scoring record, whilst being unequivocally garbage at every major tournament post 2004, points to the statistical deceptions of his career. Today's papers will be full of the phrase his 'record speaks for itself' when really it is the opposite, his stature as a player is harder to assess and generates a lot of discussion.

What is beyond doubt is he scored some world beaters and got the crowd on their feet. Our grandkids will still be watching some of his goals with wide-eyed wonderment. He's also done well to stay on the rails (more or less). The tabloid parasites would have loved to feast on a Gaza-style implosion, as the Croxteth scally fell to bits in the public eye. Never happened.

I am not sure why you want to judge his entire career based on woeful england outings at tournaments

Out of interest who is the england player who has looked world class at a tournament since then ?

His main issue is that he is a sort of second striker who will make the team better, score some belters but never quite be the goal machine like Shearer so folk can have this sort of chat despite him being his team and his country's top goal scorer of all time.
Impressive considering he is not just a goal scorer/out and out attacker/fox in the box.

As a united fan I'm glad he spent his career scoring 250 goals for us, and not someone else. Any team would want someone of that quality in their squad, surely?

Yes, he's had dips in form, and a fondness for pies at times, but he's a big game player, who's come up with the goods in really important games, and who always puts a shift in!

As for his England career... at the last debacle he was pretty much the only player who looked like he could actually be bothered

I mostly agree about the last debacle, but I also saw his passing go completely astray. English football has never been as low as that Iceland match though,

Re Shearer, how many penaltys scored at club and country level?
Would be interesting to see his ratio v Rooney

It's a great question though, would you rather have had Rooney or Shearer for 10 seasons?

Rooney has never hit the heights I hoped, his breakthrough for Everton and England promised so much. That being said he has been the "best we've got". Congratulations to him, he's going to smash the record (different time of course) - 300 goals ?

Thinking Rooney at 30/31 playing in a more withdrawn role for England was going to "light up" Euro 2016 was daft. Whole tournament was summed up by Kane's corners 😐

Liverpool can't be drawing with the bottom club and losing away to Bournemouth after being ahead and hope to be title challengers.

Spurs doing ok, battle for 2nd/3rd. Man U won't qualify for CL imo, just not doing enough.

Its no secret that Fergie always wanted Shearer at Old Trafford.

Fantastic player. Can't see anyone ever beating his goalscoring record.

But comparing him to Rooney is comparing apples and pears

what Binners said they are different players

Shearer will get you more goals Rooney will make more difference to the team

Ideally you would have wanted both

oh, great goal for Rooney, but Maureen would have gone mental had it sailed over the bar, and rightly so,

It didn't though, did it? Thats the point.

When he was asked about the bicycle kick against City I posted above, he was honest enough to say that he practiced it all the time and 99 times out of 100 it went over the bar. I suspect he was being falsely modest

Either way, he didn't half pick his moment to deliver the one that didn't. The match winner in the 87th minute of a derby match

Everyone would surely have Shearer proper world class. Where as Rooney is good but a bit of a flat track bully and goes missing in big games. Rooney's performance in the Euros was dismal.
