Happy days! Started it up this morning and no warnings! An hour up and down the motorway later... took it into the local specialist to read the error codes.

Not happy days! Turns out the EGR cooler is kaput with an intermittent fault.

700 notes to sort...

Currently trying to track down a bacon butty to ease my pain 😉

Before spanking £700 have a look for companies that do dpf delete.

I don't drive VAG but there are bmw specialists who take the dpf off*, cut a small hole in the top and weld a through pipe in place then weld the opening up and re-fit. They then map your engine to run without.

Still passes emissions tests and mot as the mot is a visual check to make sure it's still in place.

Makes your engine rev smoother, more powerful and more economical. Obviously not so green though.

I'd bet my bottom dollar there are plenty of VW specialists offering the same service.

*I of course wouldn't have done anything of the sort to my car.

The problem is that petrols produce more CO2, which is bad, but diesels produce more other stuff, which is also bad.

So take your pick.

This is true but kind of goes out the window when

That argument kind of goes out the window

Diesels are inherently dirtier than petrol engines, all the complex pollution mitigation regimes used by the engines to meet regs proves this.

They should be taxed appropriately

Try somewhere else. Just did this on our 55 plate Saab diesel. Parts, Labour & VAT were about £250.
