[Closed] Smokers in stairwell...acceptable..?

Woke up this morning with a raging hangover, and a little techy but....

I live in a block of flats...someone on the floor below insists on smoking in the stairwell. Is it just me or is it not a bit off given if they aren't prepared to polute their flat they shouldn't think its ok to smoke in the communal area. Worse, they often leave their fag ends ...

Should I complain, ignore (If I'm honest there are far bigger things in the world to get in a huff about), or politely ask if I can use their toilet next time I need a shit, as I can't be assed stinking out my own toilet?

I read somewhere that urine, particularly stale urine, neutralises the smell of cigarette smoke. Piss on their door, see if that takes the smell away. 😉

You could take a dump in front of them while they smoke? But yeah, they should go outside rather than use a communal space. Do you have a building manager you can speak to? There could be something in the contract preventing them smoking in certain areas?

As a smoker, I don't get smoking indoors. It's absolutely minging!

Do a massive poo outside their front door!

Start leaving your bin bags outside their door.

Remember, it's not just the smell that's the issue OP.

Shouldn't need to be in the contract, smoking in the common parts is against the law, same as in a pub.

Edit: re-read the OP, it's not clear if the stairwell is enclosed, if it's mainly open, then it would be up to the building management/owners etc.

If it's an enclosed public space, it's illegal.

Their lungs will be as sticky as flypaper, so they're kind of filtering all the particulates from the air?

Maybe return the favour and leave them a bucket of sand for their butt-ends! 😉

Discreetly put up a couple of smoke detectors in the stairwell, You can normally get them free off the council, or even be really cheeky and the fire brigade will come round and fit them out of reach!

who's to know if they're official or not 😀

Pick up a load of fag ends and leave outside their door loosely scattered,

Yep def against the law, my flat is in a council owned block enclosed staircase and they put signs up on every entrance/hallway door.

Doesn't stop it but reminds a few, they do tend to smoke outside the front door which tbh is just as bad!

I'm not sure the law covers private dwellings, even in communal areas.

I smoke, and I'd still tell them to **** off outside.

It's definitely illegal (edit- apparently not in Scotland!)and having signs telling people it's illegal is also a legal requirement.

The people smoking could get a £200 fine.

The Landlords/Managing Agents could get fined £2500 if they fail to sort out a situation when it's brought to their attention.

Whatever the legality, it's antisocial.

Bucket of fermented piss poured from 3 storeys up.

Agreed.

I'm an ex smoker, but even when I smoked, I didn't smoke indoors hardly at all (pre ban)

Still reckon a couple of really cheap smoke alarms stuck to the roof with double sided tape - using the head of a brush to stick em up quickly and out of reach.

doubt a crafty fag in the hallway would set off a fire alarm would it?

Get whatever alarms they fit in airplane loos then. 🙂
(I've always suspected there aren't any of course... )

Or maybe just ask them.

Tell the smokers it's way cooler to be seen smoking outside as then women will see them and think they are was cooler and therefore more attractive than non smoking blokes.

They're bound to fall for it.

If they don't go for it, tell them they'll look way harder if they smoke outside.....
