Had a smart meter installed last week. Readings indicate that we are using 50p worth of gas between midnight and 6:00am whilst the heating is off and no hot water is being used.

Any ideas why?

I had this with BG - the standing charge for each fuel was being applied during the night.

Ah, that would make sense.

Thanks.

Could be frost protection?

50p would be a bit too steep for a standing charge, wouldn't it? It's normally around 20-something...

Is it constant throughout the night or all in one half hour period?

They apply the standing charge to the meeting reading, which is a very confusing way of doing it as it just makes the meter look faulty.

Not if your tarrif has a cheap unit price. It's why you need accurate usage stats when doing supplier comparisons.

50p does seem high, we pay 17.26p per day standing charge for each of Gas and Electricity. Although BG are notoriously expensive, so maybe 50p is normal for them.

Is it your lab manufacturing crystal meth?

The 50p comment may not have been 100% accurate.
