MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Requirements
Down
Good for below freezing
Wide
Possibly inexpensive
What's worth looking at?
Like the look of the Rab Morpheus but would ideally like something cheaper.
I like Vango bags so would probably go for a Venom 600. Not sure how they are width wise compared to others though.
Big fan of Rab. If you are close to their base near Sheffield they have a factory shops. Was 12pm on a Weds/Thurs. Picked up two ex display winter bags a few years ago.
Rock N Run have Mountain Hardware on sale, they make some great bags.
Wide may be the challenge here.
I'm a fan of the Alpkit and Vango range, but I don't think they're wide.
IIRC, Vaude do wide range.
What's the budget?
Maybe £150 ish
Although ideally less if possible.
Hmmm, is there a reason you are going down? I use Snugpaks with the extender panel to make them nice and wide so you get a comfortable nights sleep.
Robens generally are roomy, good specs and reasonably priced
@loddrik - how tall are you?
Some standard bags are for people up to 6ft
I'm 6ft. Just find down much more comfortable than synthetic fill. I prefer roomier as can feel a little claustrophobic if my legs are hemmed in.
Some brands make standard and longer lengths for some of their models e.g. Marmot, Mountain Equipment, Mountain Hardwear etc.
Just do some research as if you're on the cusp, and you are, then the std length may be too restrictive. I'm 6'1.5" and have had this problem particularly with lightweight bags
Best recommendation I had was a British army surplus, may be in short supply, can be got new/unused.
If you find sleeping bags restrictive have you thought about quilts? A bit lighter for a given temp rating but you do need to use a decent sleeping mat with them especially at lower temps. Cumulus are probably the best value for money, something like the 250 https://backcountry.scot/product/cumulus-quilt-250/ will be fine at zero but is a little over your budget at £170. I'm 180cm (5'11") and have the lighter 150 version and it covers my shoulders OK.
No one "right" answer really but you do tend to get what you pay for, cheaper down bags tend to use lower fillpower down making them bulkier (though still not as bulky as synthetic) plus the down/feather ratio is often low making them feel itchy as there's more feather quills poking in to the fabric.
I use a quilt in my hammock, it is indeed less bulky and as warm as an equivalent priced sleeping bag.
Im quite a big chap.

Look on Ultimate Outdoors website. There's a Berghaus down bag at 99 quid with extra 15% off today. forget the name but it seems to be top of that range
Thanks for the replies chaps. Ended up going with the berghaus above. Looked to be too good a deal to pass up.
I can't seem to get the 15% discount to work, am I being particularly thick?

Just looked to be nosey.
It says on the site the "Ultimate Collection" items are excluded from the 15% offer.... The £99 bag is part of the Ultimate Collection so is therefore excluded as far as I can see.
No idea how the op got the 15% off, if indeed he did? You could go for another bag I guess though bud, and get the 15% off?
There was a code for xmas day and boxing day only. Included ultimate collection as well. Normally extra discounts don't include ultimate stuff (which is what most people want!). Seemed like a good deal. I wanted something with the hydrophobic treatment on the down though.
No I didn't get the 15% to work. But £100 seemed like a pretty good deal for what it is. I guess I'll know that in a few days when it turns up.
I've got a bunch of polar ex army ones if anyone's looking. £25 delivered I think I was asking.
What kind of condition are they in wysiwyg?
Potentially interested in one of they're in good clean nick.
Cheers
Have there's pics on here somewhere in my post history. Theyre currently all in storage but I can stick you one aside
