Junior wants Skylanders for his Wii. It appears that the game that comes with them varies - I thought it was just the characters that were different.
So, any advice / recommendations on which to go for and any other useful advice?

There are 3 games (I think, god knows, I just shell out hand over fist for 'em). Compatability gets complicated - Giants will not work with an original set up, you'll need a booster pack but can use your original Portal of Power; the originals will work with the Giants. If you're starting from scratch then get the Giants starter pack (game, Portal of Power and one charachter) so you've got all (current) bases covered.
Best thing to do is look in your local Tesco Extra, or similar, as they have a compatability chart that'll tell you which ones work with what...

It's just RFID. Buy an Arduino and RFID shield and start fuzzing the reader with pre-programmed tokens.

My 8 year old has spent a fortune so far on skylanders / skylander giants.
He could have saved up and bought a decent bike 🙂

You've gotta admire their [s]balls[/s] business model.
Develop a game, add a few bits of plastic and then charge 3 times the going rate plus a tenner for each additional character you want to unlock - genus!
