We've been with O2 for years but they've sold out to Sky. We were migrated across yesterday and have not had any service since since and can't get through to "customer service". ๐ฟ
Sky is generally pretty good. However, Sky only bought out O2 for the customer base and arent actually keeping the O2 equipment in the exchange, hence the migration.
It may be a problem in the exchange swapping the cable over to the new DSLAM, they'll get it sorted, so keep trying.
Mine is t awesomz! 8mb most evenings and as its their own equipment in the exchange no choking back of speed during peak times. Never had any problems with customer service either. You ringing the right number?
You are probably going through the 'testing' phase where they throttle your line down and slowly add speed to find the fastest stable speed. Either that or an exchange problem, Ive had them a while and its been excellent.
That's reassuring, thanks. Certainly not a testing phase. We've had nothing for over 12 hours now. The real pain is we also use it as a signal booster for the mobiles so no phone coverage either.
Interestingly I have a client who was migrated yesterday and theirs isn't back up this morning. Their migration completed about 19:00 last night. Even though the router lights suggest all ok.
They're on an 020 8429 xxxx number on the Pinner exchange, if that helps?
Sky was spectacularly rubbish for me - Virgin speed far better and the wifi router is *vastly* superior.
Are you using the Sky router?

Not really fair comparing Sky and Virgin, especially if you go from a copper ADSL line to Virgin fiber package. The virgin router is equally as bad as the Sky router really, a lot of people just put it into modem only mode then use a decent router behind it for the network stuff.
The Sky fiber stuff is really good but no where near as fast down as the Virgin. Much better upload speeds though which is good if you host content on your network.
The sky router is rubbish but make sure you're using that initially and you should get a connection.
No sky router, not been sent one. Still using the netgear 834 that worked perfectly with the O2 set up right up until Thursday morning.
It's an 0115 number so different exchange I guess!
Sky are offering a new router and booster, get in quick for the booster.

In my experience no. We have the Superhub (so it has two frequencies) and we can get coverage across the whole house (with a full signal). With the Sky one we couldn't get a signal at all in around half the house.
sky were awful for us too 0.5 MB was the best we could get
TalkTalk give us 5MB on the same stretch of copper
After lots of utterly pointless technical support going round in circles, I finally got through to an engineer who was the first person I got to speak to who could speak off script.
He confirmed that the entire exchange was on BT kit the and it was massively over subscribed, the only provider who had their own kit in the exchange was TalkTalk, so we changed asap.
What annoyed me the most was the initial promise of 2mb which they'd never be able to keep, and the hoops they made me jump through testing this and that when they should have known full well that the 0.5mb was all I was going to get on their massively over subscribed kit\lines. Just be bloody honest, either way I wasn't going to continue paying for the piss poor service so left. If they'd have not wasted my time and been honest in the first place I'd not rubbish them at every opportunity like now. ๐
Not sure how Sky are handling the switchover of O2 but in general you need a username/password combo that's hard coded into their router to get an IP address.
Specifically, you'll get sync to the exchange but no internet access.
I was an O2 customer and enjoyed years of excellent, fast, reliable broadband.
I got a letter saying I was going to be migrated to Sky, so I called them up to cancel and move to BT. Sky offered me free broadband if I moved my line rental to them for a year.
Seemed like a good deal until the change actually happened. My broadband is slower, the router keeps dropping the laptop, which I never got with O2, and my Android phone contstantly says Internet connection unstable.

Erm, TalkTalk is BT...
really, I thought they were carphonewarehouse, well same boss.Erm, TalkTalk is BT...

Err no that is wrong. They only use BT OPENREACH to support and maintain the network and rent the copper line to TalkTalk who have their own DSLAM and switches in the Openreach exchange.

That's why it doesn't work. Sky specifically requires a Sky router as the ADSL credentials are hard-coded into it as Flaperon says. (It is, or at least was, possible to hack the router to get your password and use another router, but you'd still need the Sky router initially to do that)
Bigyinn - sorry, confused them with PlusNet. No need to shout, though.
Onzadog, if it doesn't get sorted soon drop me a line with some details. I have some contacts in the O2 estate, and very specifically in the contact centre handling the majority of first line broadband questions. I can get someone to have a look, or at least get in touch with you to see what they can do.
Cheers

I've had a nightmare since they switched us over from o2.
Can't get LoveFilm, YouTube, IPlayer, ITV Player, or 4oD to work properly, yet there is no packet loss logged and other (non video) sites work perfectly. I wonder if they are doing some packet inspection and lowering the priority of streaming services. ๐ก

One word is hardly shouting!
Onzadog, what are your router settings on the netgear? If you look at ADSL settings and see if the router has multiplexing as LLC based and VPI/VCI as 0/101 you'll need to change the router settings, which Sky should have told you / or more likely supplied a new router.
Hi All, thanks for the advice and offers of help on this. An update for those who are interested.
We were told by Sky that as we'd not had a second letter giving a date for the switch over, it hadn't happened and the fault was down to O2. Seems like too much of a coincidence for my liking but I called O2. Very helpful but they explained that they'd had confirmation of the switch over and it was down to Sky. Once I explained my setup, he agreed that as I'd not been sent a Sky router, it was probably a setting issue.
So, I was transferred over to someone at Sky. In all fairness, they did offer me a Sky router but I said there was no need if we could get my Netgear working.
Spoek to a nice lady who wasn't familiar with the Netgear but was relieved that I knew how to navigate it. Between us, we managed to change the settings on a couple of pages and now I'm back on line.
Would have been nice to have this information before hand, but sorted with relative ease and nowhere near as painful as it could have been.
Thanks again all.
I was with O2 and getting 14mg consistently for all that time. Got sold to Sky and dropped to 7mg almost immediately. Then the phone line stopped working and broadband down to 3mg at best...
Lousy. I;m moving house soon and won't be staying with Sky
Hardly fair to blame Sky for a line fault.
Broadband needs a working line to function properly. Fix the line, fix the speed!
Mine is terrible. But has nothing to do with Sky and everything to do with the rural location and phone line.
Less than 0.5mg in peek and around 1mg at 5am.
They just got rubbish again!
Got the broadband working on Friday evening but I've just tried sending email for the first time since then.
Obviously the old o2 outgoing mail server isn't working now but from what I'm reading, it seems the sky outgoing server only works with sky email addresses (I'm still looking to an ntl incoming server to collect messages). All this worked just find under o2.
Try using smtp.tools.sky.com with no authentication for sending mail.

Not really skys fault that their SMTP is more secure and you're using an antiquated email system.
As above, there may be an open SMTP relay you could use somewhere on the web to resolve it but ultimately NTL should provide the relay as it's their mail system and service you're using.
I can't remember why the ntlworld smtp stopped working when we switched to o2. Might be worth trying that again. It shouldn't be dependant on their firbe network (which we don't use) should it.
The sky frustration is more that the switchover has been handled rather poorly, with little or no information.
If there's something these threads tell me, it's that the best thing to do if you're looking for broadband recommendations for home, is to ask your neighbours. I've had Sky for ages. I don't think I've had a single problem with it other than to switch the router on and off once, maybe twice in quite a few years.
@Onza just take the Sky router, if nothing else it will eliminate that variable from your analysis. If you get it working you can always try and reconnect the netgear one.

O2 could have been limiting port 25 connections to SMTP servers down to their own. Might work now on sky as mine connects to all and sundry across the internet.
Going back to the NTL server didn't work. What has worked is setting up a Sky/Yahoo email which then lets me use the sky outgoing server. Then, in the settings of that, I can get it to pretend to be my other account.
I don't claim to know much about these things but it feels like a bit of a bodge. How can putting an extra link in the system be more robust?
