I'm interested in listening to a bit of ska - any fans on here?
I don't know much about it - got any suggestions on popular stuff to start with?
Try the Skatalites
Toots & The Maytals
The Ethiopians
Studio1 ska and studio1 soul compilations on Soul Wax records
Trojan compilations are a good place to start.
Can always find a place on my playlist for...
The Prince (Madness)
Guns of Navarone (Roland Alphonso & the Skatalites)
The Specials
Gangsters
Something a bit more current.
WATCH THIS!
ta, folks.
Slight high jack but I'm liking Madness's new album Oui, Oui, Si, Si, Ja, Ja, Da, Da
I think you mean soul jazz records, 100 etc dynamite collection are good, if you want mainstream ska then two tone records is a good starting point, selector are a personal fave, if you want to dig deeper then the soul jazz comps are ace, studio one ska is very good, as is Jackie Mitoo.
I must play this song every day.
Ike Bennet and The Crystallites.
Spanish ska:
Ska-P - El Gato Lopez
Skalariak - Puto Alcohol
try these guys . One of my fav local bands "Shoot the moon"
Liked the Dualers up top there. How about some Bad Manners?
A bit of Dreadzone
then step into the hall of the mountain king
Bit of punky ska
Reel Big Fish.
Back in the days of cassettes I heard this in my sleep and taped it. Sort of remembered taping something in my sleep, played it in the morning and WOW!
Yes,pre Mrs Zip I used to sleep with the radio on.
Dance Craze was a film from 1981 I think
And here is the album
Bad Manners, Special Brew
trojan cmpilation albums are fantastic.
Loads of classics already mentioned but I also quite like a bit of the Prague Ska Conspiracy.
All of the above are very good & I'd heartily recommend checking out some of Gaz Mayalls compilationsp particularly - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gaz-Mayall-Presents-Top-Ska/dp/B00021997W
He's been collecting music for years (hes the son of blues maestro Jon Mayall), has 10'000s of records and runs Gaz's Rockin Blues (longest running uk club night (I think) & best stage @ carnival).
I prefer the old Jamaican Ska to the later British 2tone and the even more recent Ska punk sound from America..
Trojan records have some great compilations
Some of Scotlands finest....

Check out some Imperial Leather if you can find it

A few that I never bother listening to and probably arent even Ska (mst are some sort of punk hybrid affair, but they're still good)
inner terrestrials
the slackers
Bedouin Soundclash
Autonomads
capdown
Random Hand
The Skints
Harrijan
As many have mentioned your best starting point is The Skatalites-- check out their origins!
Prince Buster --another stalwart
There are many artists who sang over ska tunes, but most of the backing tracks were laid by a handful of session men,be careful though, it needs to be played loud, preferably in a dancehall situation-- guaranteed to get people moving !
one of these guys is an STW forum member 8)
A great band to watch live
Capdown for contemporary angry ska
Also seek out Owter Zeds - Hebden Bridge's finest for a more fun but very musical sound
The old Jamaican stuff takes some beating though
yunki-- did they play boomtown 2011 ?
Finally all of Bad Manners stuff is on CD, just ordered all my old vinyls
Can't believe no-one's mentioned
Rx Bandits [moved from Ska>Rock>Prog over their course] - Frequently amazing - I'd say The Resignation should be mandatory for all even slightly interested in Ska and Rock. If you can find a copy of Demo(nstration), it's great fun! NB you need to hear it in CD quality, or higher.
Mad Caddies "Duck and Cover" is one of the most engaging Ska/Punk Hybrid albums and frequently converts those who hear it. I gather they used to be mostly the same band as The Ivy League
I went to a Bad Manners gig [Newquay] and they refused to play 'cos more people turned-up than they expected and therefore they wanted more money from the organizer. He didn't have it, so they left us hanging.
Bad Manners in word
Bad Manners indeed
Start with TightenUp from Trojan and find your direction from there. stay away from the Lovers' Rock
Try Ernest Ranglin , early pioneer of jamaican jazz , or prince buster
more recent try jazz jamiace all-stars
If you go to Prince Buster then go to the mighty I-Roy and Lee Perry, i am so jealous that you have so much fantastic music to discover!
and
I don't know about the OP, but I'm learning a lot!

some quite good podcasts here, although they seemed to have stopped doing them.
I liked that video with The Dualers.
Who was the short guy dancing, just some grown up rude boy or was he part of the act?
