I'll watch it later. He seems an alright guy.
Why are the likes of Steve Peat, the Athertons and Danny Hart and all other not treated like him? Just because there's no olympic sport doesn't make them any less athletes.

Great programme. Inspirational but no ego about him at all. I wish I got to work with people like that

Thanks for posting OP. That starting simulator looked like torture. 600+ watts from each leg!

It was indeed excellent

If downhill mountain biking was an Olympic sport it woukd change enormously, it would be much more serious and worse for it.

Well maybe the Athertons were always the exception but for the longest time in DH, the word 'athlete' is not one that you could have ever used. You only had to be at the races to see that. They looked more like Bacchanalian orgies than athletic events. It's different now but I personally don't think they are quite in the same league of 'athleticism' as top level track or pro road cyclists.

Again that has changed massively and the likes if the Athertons and Gwin have brought a whole new approach to physical conditioning to the sport but I wonder whether it's still possible to pull a win out at a UCI World Cup event based in skill rather than athleticism. Of course you can argue that skill and athleticism are the same thing, or maybe just different sides of the same coin. But the we'd also be referring to the Olympic Curling team and the Commonwealth Games Crown Green Bowls team as 'athletes' which would seem, well just a bit ridiculous to me.

The question of media interest and recognition is probably not about denying their athleticism though. That will have more to do with exposure and accessibility. DH racing isn't particularly accessible whereas just going for a bike ride is. Most people can engage with the basics of what Hoy and Wiggins do, but DH racing is a whole order of magnitude different. Peat, the Athertons et al aren't household names not because they aren't seen as athletes but because DH racing is a marginal sport. It doesn't have a particularly wide following.

Yeah. What about Bob Nudd, Desmond Douglas and Jonah Barrington also? Or is that because their sports are niche and mean a lot to this who follow them but are largely ignored by a vast percentage of the population? Sadly not everyone can be a household name.

My mate Jason is up there with the best at 24 hour racing yet he shops in Tesco without getting mobbed for his autograph.

Hoy has the profile he has because he took 6 Olympic golds. 6 Olympic 4ths and he would be working as a personal trainer in Peebles.

If he had won 6 fencing golds the high streets would be full of shops selling swords to men in Audis.

Think you'd have to include Jamie Bestwick somewhere just for his long running record of wins at the X games.

...and Allison Fisher, Larry Kahn and Kristof Willerton.

Why can't everybody be famous? It just isn't fair.

Back to the OP. It is a good program, but only an hour long. Still it manages to squeeze in Hoy, Redgrave, Adlington and Lennox Lewis, who have 13 Olympic golds between them.

Yes... I enjoyed it too.

If you have done your very very best and lose.... Shake the other mans hand ..... That's a good mentality
