The only reason I want to, is to run some new software, but there appears to be a lot of negative feedback on the net. Any thoughts?

I like it, but it's nothing revolutionary. Had no issues other than the upgrade took about 6 attempts inc many reboots.

The internet is a whinge powered megaphone. Mavericks is fine, nothing revolutionary at all.
You just won't get people going to the effort to say as much on the net.
