Volunteered to help out another project and ended up doing pretty much all the work asked of me plus more to add value to a poorly run project- effectively replacing the PM. I've not heard a thing back from the PM. Nothing in months. I've followed up once a month just to 'touch base.'
Appreciate they probably used me but just a simple thanks would've maybe helped.
Rant over.
... not if you get the credit/kudos/££££'s 😉
Should I be annoyed?
Will you gain any discernible benefit from being annoyed?
It's entirely your choice, but, if it were me, I wouldn't make the effort to be bothered.
I'm with perchy on this one. If you've ever got the option not to be annoyed, choose that.
Experience.
Example A:
You charge a high fee and deliver high quality - you’ll get great feedback and recommendations/repeat business.
Example B:
You offer to ‘help out‘ and deliver exactly the same high quality - chances are you’ll be seen as a ‘doormat’ and some kind of ‘sap‘. Not always, but it happens. You’re already a vague memory as soon as they pocket your work. The ‘argument‘ can be made: ‘If you volunteered, then it shows how much you value your own skills and time’.
The above argument doesn’t make it true. But people often tend to unconsciously form ‘impressions’ based upon their own projections ie ‘if I did it for ‘free’, then I’d think myself a sap’
Don’t take it personally, take is as experience.
I 2nd what people have said here.
You have to be proud within yourself of what you have achieved.
I actually enjoy hearing about people's achievements like yours - and I wish people would do it more. Though it doesn't seam like a very British thing to talk about.
Funny the OP should call himself Mr Sheen.
I design and build fitted bedrooms. A few weeks ago I had a serious back problem so I couldn't do the heavy work and I asked a retired acquaintance to be my labourer for £10/hr.
We joke he's my "Mr Muscle". Loves the jobs I hate.
I assume you’re a full time employee anyway? If so, just sounds like you went to work as always, did more than you should’ve (don’t know why you didn’t drop the PM in it, I would’ve and I’m a PM) a got paid as normal? Probably best just to move on but keep a note for annual review time about how you went “above and beyond”
Should I be annoyed?
Never ever volunteered unless you know the people appreciate your help.
Consider yourself lucky nobody complains about you yet.
If the result goes pear shape later on you will be seen as a busy body and probably get into hot water.
If the other PM cannot do his/her job then let it be.
Let them ask you officially rather then you offering yourself for the chop if something goes wrong with the project in future.
Should you be annoyed? No, you should be blamed.
Experience.

So true ...
The old proverb: if you volunteer to fix the photocopier, you'll always be the guy that fixes the photocopier.
If you go above and beyond, as you clearly did, be prepared that the only thing you get out of it is self satisfaction. Go with that. Don't be annoyed that you volunteered to fix the photocopier in the first place.

......is basically the reason I am looking for a new job.
I have either volunteered or been volunteered for too many 'one-off' tasks that turn out to be nothing of the sort. My workload is insane as a result.
Probably my own fault but it has poisoned my view of my job and employer irreparably. They're always happy to take.
Another old proverb - If you want something doing, give it to a busy person. Hi, fellow doormats.

Never a truer ****ing word!

effectively replacing the PM.
You want to be thanked for making somebody look incompetent
Try being a DT teacher.
What starts out as 'ooh Tom, can you make me a doorstop.' Ends up two years later as 'ooh Tom, can you design and make covid signage for the whole school?'
Yep, if you pay me extra. What you won't? Sorry then.
If you’ve ever got the option not to be annoyed, choose that.
Some people find this easy, maybe it's their default, others wired the other way.
Ajantom
I’m going to send you some y7s can you just glue their shoes back together Some y8 glasses need screws oh and can we have a sheet of acrylic to cover a noticeboard? Sound familiar? Glad I’m away from that now but do miss having all the kit to play with.
