It’s been a sad descent from a sort of “healthy” scepticism sometime last year (fairly liberal use of the word “healthy” there - just couldn’t think of anything else in the moment) - it was more an anti-Tory type sentiment - to pretty much full on denial that COVID is even a problem now, let alone the anti-vaxx bollocks. We’ve tried the various tactics advised for discussing it but nothing works. I hope that herd immunity will help protect her and others like her going forward. 😕

I think you may have stumbled onto a solution. A social media whisper campaign that the only way to properly deny gravity is to step off a tall building. I would suggest starting this soon, you don't want them finding out about the illuminati and elections.

Well that BBC report mentions ‘thousands’ yet it looks nearer tens of thousands, or over a hundred thousand to me? The report also makes a bigger deal about Extinction Rebellion for some reason but the ‘flavour’ I’m getting is conspiracy/anti-lockdown/anti-mask/anti-vaccine protest?

Were any STWrs present/in the area? Would love to hear a possibly less-biased report.

My understanding was it was originally an Extinction Rebellion event, there were due to be more around the country as well. Presumably the others were invited or just tagged along.

Sounds like people were just out to shout about whatever has annoyed them most over the last year. everything from Anti-Vaxxers to Brexiteers to Extinction Rebellion and all points in between.

Calling it a "Freedom March" seems intended to nudge the narrative towards claiming it was about Gammony topics... But I think it might have been more like a general "March against Malaise"...

There were two completely unconnected marches in London yesterday.

One was the Freedom March and the other one was the People’s Assembly Against Austerity.

Today Extinction Rebellion had a demonstration in London.

Also today in London there was the "Free to Dance Protest" which apparently despite its name was a serious protest highlighting the effect of restrictions on the hospitality industry.

Edit : the People’s Assembly is an organisation backed by trade unions and several political parties including the Labour Party.

Oops, I just went camping two weeks ago. First proper break I’ve had for 3 years and it was much needed. Went for a pint. A meal. Some walking, some biking.

When I arrived at the site I was told that 180 pitches had just vacated over the weekend, so people are going on holiday. Our friend’s self-catering holiday lets and glamping have also been fully booked of late.

Wait, come to think of it - I was required to use table service though. And the campsite requested all used anti-bac gel before entering showers.

So was there a big march or not? Is that drone footage real? Why are these things never advertised? Why have I seen nothing about it on the socials?

The feeling I’m getting from this thread is that people believe that the majority of protesters/marchers were from a few organised political campaigns such as Labour, and Extinction Rebellion. And reading/viewing the (minimal) BBC, Sky, Gusrdian etc news coverage I too get that impression.

Yet head over to youtube and it’s an entirely different picture with the majority of comments claiming that the focus on a few (sic) ‘left wing protests’ was simply a mainstream media distraction from the ‘real event’ which was overwhelmingly anti-lockdown/anti social-distancing etc. There seems to be a massive disconnect between that which is reported by the mainstream media and the groundswell of public opinion against misreporting/censorship.

While I'm all for a camping holiday - for alot of people....that's not a holiday. That's their anxiety ridden idea of complete hell.......much as mines is 2 weeks all inclusive by a crowded pool.

Isn't that direct from the Trump playbook though? Use social media which is not controlled in any way to claim whatever to support their position. I mean, it might be true that it was anti lockdown and is misrepresented by the media or it might be it really was Labour/Extinction Rebellion and the youtube claim is bollards to make the anti lockdown appear more popular than it is.

Or there's a massive disconnect between all sides of main stream media - left, right and centre, print, online, TV - and what gets out on YouTube by specific campaign groups. Just look at the lies peddled by Trump etc in the US against the media which are being shown to be false.

I'm no fan of our main stream media on the whole, but I know which I think is the most likely scenario.

If not going on holiday abroad for 18 months is causing actual depression then other things need to be addressed rather than going on a holiday.

As for the stupidity of people and the impact of social media BS on these people, can't see that ever going away. The stupid people have always been there but now the majority of them are using and being influenced (easily) by social media whereas previously they were influenced by smaller groups of face to face friends/conversations and mainstream media.

- We're not small, we're medium. We're 21st in population out of nearly 200 countries. Ireland, Luxembourg, Estonia are small.
- We are quite rich overall and we import a hell of a lot of stuff from other countries, which means that their carbon emissions are on our sooty hands.

In this case they are most probably telling the truth... I'm not sure what you mean by a groundswell of public opinion, but my guess is you don't like that the mainstream media isn't telling you what you want to hear after watching some pretty biased material on YouTube
