Volume.

"Hi, I'd like to sell you some copper."

"Excellent. How many tons do you have?"

cos they will only buy by the ton/bigger load.

put the other way - why don't you buy mars bars from mars instead of buying them at the corner shop and cut out the middle man.

EDIT again: I once had to buy one barrel of ship fuel. oh how they laughed. 😳

On to the foundries, or exported.

Stick your copper in a Jiffi bag and send it over to China!

Just like cash4gold!

🙂

a hell of a lot of what 'we' recycle goes off to China. probably one of our biggest exports now (excluding air). The majority of containers leaving the UK are empty

last weeks scrap prices from MRW:

ranges from £3800-4950tonne.

less for copper cable, but still good, now you know why your train is delayed or cancelled as scrots have nicked trackside cabling.

lost of containers are filled like this with metal scrap. Some copper goes to germany as they have a number of copper smelters using secondary copper

fair enough if it was made there to start with 😉

cheers, looks like I could get quite a bit back from stripping out all the old heating system. Pipes, cylinder, back boiler...

no wonder all my copper pipes went missing when the builders were doing the damp and had to take the rads off the wall. They chucked out my TRVs too.

Got an old iron radiator too (nasty looking thing).

You may/will have to prove where you got it from, the police are doing checks on the scrappies, and asking them where stuff came from, eg reg numbers or and addresses.

A local has just been charged with stealing the large name plates off a war memorial, (large means about 4 foot by 2 foot), just to supply the demand to china, and fuel his own greed.

I've found stripped cable to be worth abit more than your old copper pipes etc. Usually about £500 per tonne more.

Bright wire currently 4800 tonne
Braziery copper (old pipe etc/tanks) 4500 tonne
My last weigh in netted just short of £200 but it was well earned as 50% of it was armoured cable that I stripped!
Lead about 1000/tonne just in case there are any churches near you 😉

The price of copper and its attraction to the stealing buggers has kept me bust at work for the last 3 years, and in the last 12 months we have had a dead one, a burnt one and a hand left behind next to a hacksaw!

At night now when i get called out, i wonder what the hell i will find when i open a sub station door..............

Manufacturers buy it back also you would need a huge volume to sell rather than a small amount.
Even the scrape yard will sell it on before it gets to the manufacturing stage.

If braziery copper is cleaned then it usually gets priced at the top rate.

Stripped copper cable is usually at the top rate as its high quality stuff, though you have to decide on the amount of time it takes to strip it versus what you get for unstripped cable.

Circular market innit. When you nick the power cables from the railway they have to buy new ones.

Yes copper cable gets a good price if you have already removed to the insulation etc, if not, you get a lower price as the processor has to remove it.

If you're gonna be stripping insulation off copper pipes, tanks and cabling you might want to check the contents of the insulation first if it's older stuff......this is a picture from a recent survey where pipework had been pulled (ilegally) from a roof void in a derelict building and the copper stripped and dropped through the broken first floor window.

[IMG] [/IMG]

That stuff ^ is caposite sectional lagging and is 85% brown asbestos.

Apparently the local police had caught a couple of the thieves from this site and took them back to the station before realising the powdery stuff all over the back of the car and cell was not the kind of stuff you'd want to be breathing in.....

Surely it is going to go the other way as the chinese currency gets stronger as long as we sell it to them at the same chinese price. 🙂

So BT might be worth selling to the chinese who can use their cheap labour to strip it all out. I'd be happy to make £1 Billion out of the deal.

BT protects its cables with smar****er which is a kinda of marker with chemical DNA through it.
Most if not all scrap yards in the uk know that BT cable is marked with the stuff. Prosecutions are on the up because of it.

BBC local news tonight , police raiding scrap yards, found a load of security brass padlocks off substations, part of the catenary wire off the metro link trams, and a load of other stuff, they also pulled over a chap in a van, cylinder in back, the van wasnt insured, he didnt have a driving licence, and was wanted for some arrestable misdeed, his van will now be scrapped.
