If Scots live in Scotland, why aren't people who live in England called Engs?

Because we are a diverse mixture of all
Kinds of people from many different places. Most of us don't have a narrow nationalistic view.

We were Angles, hence Angle-land. I suppose with the mixing in of the Saxons and whoever else chose to invade us over the centuries we're no longer true Angles, merely Angle-ish.

What would you suggest we call people from ****stan?

I used to work in a place in Newcastle, which had a high proportion of Scottish people working there. The locals called us jockroaches!

I thought that was pretty funny! 🤣🤣

Could you explain for me please? And others who may be hard of thinking like me?

The ones famous for inventing the famous guitar effect in the 70s.

English. Surely it's not that hard?

Wasn't it Kennedy that claimed to be a Berliner (a type of doughnut)?

Deserved more credit.

The simple answer is language isn't fixed so shorter form demonyms like "Scot" or "Pole" are probably only adopted if they work to the speakers ears. Engs and Ires don't really work as words so the longer form alternative English and Irish is used instead.

Were people form Swaziland called Swazis?

A mate had to have that awkward conversation with a ****stani lad he was working with at sea, basically along the lines of "You're a Scot so I'm a...". Logically it makes perfect sense, it just happens to have been hijacked as a pejorative/ignorant catch-all.

Such as?

I believe Renton described the shortcomings of both nations rather well.

But Scotland is Alba in gaelic, so surely the people who live there are Albanians?

Great Britain is also known as Albion, so are all British people Albanians too, not just those from Scotland?

Albonians, obviously.

I think that Scottish people should henceforth be called Scotlish, for consistency.

@swavis, No offence intended, just an idle quip. I made a few friends when I lived in Sutherland so I know it grates.

@JefWachowchow no offense taken 😎

And anyone wanting a whisky should be here now (Aberlour), Spirit of Speyside Whisky festival is back on, it's great seeing/hearing all the tourists again, just been chatting to a couple of Americans that are absolutely buzzing about being back.
