I've used AliExpress for various stuff with no issues yet.

Check reviews/photos/seller ratings

Use PayPal

Sellers just don't last if they're scamming folk, so just check their feedback. Scan through the reviews for AI generated/formulaic/weird responses.

Chances are you'll be alright. It's not the Dark Web, It's more regulated than you'd think.

I've used AliBaba and as far as I can recall the vender has to send an invoice/quote through the AliBaba system - it will appear in your account. I paid using my credit card - through the same account. The cost was USD200 in total, so not at your level.
It was all really simple and easy - I was hesitant at first but once you get contact with a vendor all was good.

Hope it goes well

Pay with credit card, the card issuer is liable to reimburse you if it goes sideways.  Section 25, or something like that IIRC.

Never any issues on biggish purchases here, I use PayPal for the protection andthe sellers generally have better communication than purchasing from UK stores.
